In search of pants you can wear season after season, through spring, summer, and fall
Pants are an item that, if you choose the right material, can be worn regardless of season. Denim, for instance, may go in and out of fashion in terms of cut, but it earns its keep in nearly every season except the height of summer heat. Having one such reliable pair of pants on hand—something other than denim—can really broaden the range of your outfits. So, what would that "one pair" look like?
・A material and length that work on hot days as well as slightly chilly ones
(plus a shorter length that won't get soaked in the rain and allows for easy movement)
・A silhouette that flatters the figure
・A relaxed design, yet with a substantial, refined fabric
Starting from these conditions, we arrived at ZUTTO's original "Cotton Sateen Stretch Gaucho Pants." Since debuting at the start of the year, this item has been steadily gaining fans—so much so that we've had to restock it.
We'll also share a review from a staff member who actually wears them regularly.
So, what exactly are gaucho pants?
You probably have a vague image in mind, but explaining them precisely is a bit tricky. Gaucho pants seem to fall into that category of items, but "a somewhat shorter length," "a design that flares out at the hem," and "a relaxed fit" all help capture the general image. They're now recognized as a classic silhouette in their own right.
The reason they've been so well received is probably that they take "the best of both pants and skirts." The flared hem borrows the femininity of a skirt, while the ease of movement and the freedom from worrying about various things borrows the practicality of pants. I also think gaucho pants are a style that can be worn in good balance regardless of height. Since the definition of gaucho pants length is broad, ranging anywhere from below the knee to around the ankle, they're not really an item that's limited by height.
With that, let's move on to introducing ZUTTO's "Cotton Sateen Stretch Gaucho Pants."
ZUTTO's "Cotton Sateen Stretch Gaucho Pants" take the somewhat casual image gaucho pants tend to have and update it into something refined and more grown-up.
We aimed for the ideal balance: a relaxed design with no constriction, made from a material with a subtle sheen that strikes just the right note for adult wear.
The cotton sateen stretch fabric used here is the same type of material found in military items, offering just the right thickness and durability. That description might bring to mind something rather masculine, but this particular fabric has been given a special fine peach-skin brushing on the surface.
When you actually touch it, it feels softer and smoother than you'd expect. Combined with the gentle impression and sheen created by the fine brushing, the result is a very feminine finish.
Looking at the design and form, even though these are gaucho pants, the pattern is cut so as not to add bulk at the sides. The wearer feels a relaxed fit, while the look from the outside stays trim and streamlined.
The rise is also set deep so as not to reveal the shape of the hips, giving the pants a skirt-like form and toning down the casualness typically associated with pants.
Actually, when I first heard that stretch material was used for these gaucho pants, I wondered whether stretch was even necessary. But it turns out that, precisely because of this deep rise design, stretch fabric was chosen to allow for easy leg movement. The fabric selection was made with the shape in mind from the very start.
What makes these pants so appealing is that, by taking a fabric also used in military items and shaping it into something exclusively feminine, a sense of femininity shows through beneath its handsome impression.
In early spring, right now, you can make the most of this perfect length by pairing them with socks and pumps. Even once the rainy season arrives, they balance well with short rain boots, and on days when you're watching out for splashes, the shorter length means you won't get very wet at all.
In the heat of summer, pair them with bare legs and pumps or sandals for a cool, clean look.
Your legs move freely inside the pants, and the fabric never clings to your skin or feels tight, so they stay comfortable to wear even in summer.
In cool autumn, it's also lovely to wear tights underneath and pair them with clogs or boots. Thanks to the fine brushing, even though it's cotton, the fabric never feels cold, so you can wear them comfortably in fall as well.
What a staff member who wears them regularly had to say after a full day in these pants
"I wore them all day on a day of desk work. When sitting for long hours, what usually bothers me is leg swelling from tight-fitting clothes, but since these are gaucho pants with plenty of room, I didn't have to worry about that at all. With pants that are too wide, there's so much fabric that it bunches up even while sitting, making you want to readjust your position, but these have a sizing that falls somewhere between slim pants and wide pants, so I felt they really offer the best of both worlds in that respect too. Both the length and the restrained volume make them perfect for the coming season, when you want to move around freely."
You may be wondering what length these would be on your own height, so let's compare by height.
The length falls just above the ankle. According to her, "It feels less like wearing gaucho pants and more like wide pants, but the balance is nice." The waist was adjusted smaller using the inner drawstring.
At this height, they can be worn as proper gaucho pants. The waist stays secure even without using the inner drawstring, which is reassuring. "I like pants-style outfits, and for the coming season I prefer a length that shows the ankle, so this was just right. I think it would go well with both pumps and flat sandals."
The height range where these look best balanced as "gaucho pants" is probably somewhere between about 158cm and 164cm. They look great whether worn barefoot or with tights, and with flats or heels.
