Turning rain into enjoyment—RAINS, born in Denmark

When we were children, a raincoat was something we brought along on a fun school outing, just in case. It was more of an emergency item, meant for situations where the fun was diminished. The brand that set out to make rainwear comfortable, practical, and usable all year round is RAINS. Beyond the sudden, splashing downpours we've seen in recent years, RAINS also comes in handy as a light outer layer during drizzle or on chilly days, or for anyone catching the wind while cycling or riding a motorbike.

"RAINS" was born in Denmark, a country of rain with an average of 121 rainy days a year. Founded in 2012 by Philip Lotko and Daniel Hesselager, it's a brand devoted to making rainy days feel positive. Popular mainly across Europe, in cities like Paris and London, its stylish look means its pieces get worn not just on rainy days but on sunny ones too—active all year round.

"The RAINS approach"

1. A fashionable design that feels natural as an outer layer even before it starts raining

2. A minimal Scandinavian design, instantly recognizable on the street, that people of any age or gender can wear

3. A functional, water-repellent material that also provides light warmth, making it practical for everyday use

Two shapes available

ーLong Jacket (left in the photo above)

A coat with a basic shape and silhouette, designed to be unisex. Since its design suits any age, it can be shared and worn interchangeably between partners or family members. It's a stylish coat that really works across a wide range of ages, from young students to seniors.

ーCurve Jacket (right in the photo above)

The Curve Jacket looks like a trench coat with a waist belt. Its construction gives the overall silhouette a beautiful line, making it a design that works fine for business or formal occasions as well.

The polyester fabric has a water-repellent finish that beads water off. The width of the cuffs can be adjusted with snap buttons, so the coat can even be shared within a family. At the sleeves and hood, ultrasonic-bonded seams keep rain from getting in. Above all, its smart silhouette and matte texture give it the atmosphere of a proper coat. There's also a zipper hidden behind the front buttons, so there's no need to worry about rain seeping in there either.

We tried it on and reviewed it. The case of Ms. I, height 157cm

She chose the Curve Jacket (Navy) in the 160cm–170cm size

"Normally I choose L or a size 40. M can sometimes feel tight, so I go with a larger size."

Shoes: TRAVEL SHOES Women's High-Cut Sneakers Rain WH/CA / chausser

The Curve Jacket, said to recreate the shape of a timeless trench coat, has a feminine look. Pair it with rain boots that have a bit of a heel, or a brightly colored umbrella, and even rainy days full of tiresome errands can be enjoyed with a positivity that outshines everyone else.

We tried it on and reviewed it. The case of Ms. T, height 167cm

She chose the Long Jacket (Black) in the 160cm–170cm size. "Depending on the clothing, L can sometimes be too big for me, so at times I go one size down."

Shoes: Rain Shoes Opanak 1935 With Insole/ OPANAK

The Long Jacket in Black comes in a color and shape that's easy for anyone to wear, unisex-style. If you're choosing with sharing among family members or mixing and matching with other clothes in mind, a basic black is definitely a safe choice.

We tried it on and reviewed it. The case of Ms. H, height 151cm

She chose the Long Jacket (Coral) in the 150cm–160cm size. "Normally I choose M or a size 38, since I like a looser fit, so I go with M."

Shoes: Rain Shoes Loafers / FOX UMBRELLAS

The dusty-pink Coral color seems to embody the very spirit of RAINS—transforming the gloomy image that tends to cling to rain into something positive. When it rains, people tend to worry about stains and reach for darker, heavier colors. This bright shade brightens up not just the wearer, but the people around them, and even the streets they walk through.

Of the three women, two reviewed that the sleeves ran a little long, but the one who felt they were too long noted:

"If the sleeves are long, you can just roll them up."

Long sleeves are something that can happen with imported products, but rest assured: the cuffs on RAINS have snap buttons for adjustment, and the lining is designed so you can fold the cuffs back without fastening the buttons.

Since this is an imported product, here is a sizing guide adjusted for Japanese body types ※units in cm

In addition, RAINS also offers a wide selection of bags.

Backpack Mini

Many backpacks have a look that practically shouts "I'm carrying a backpack!" from behind, but RAINS backpacks have a pared-down design that quietly asserts itself without ever going overboard—which is exactly why they're so popular as work bags that don't come across as childish. The narrower shoulder strap width is also a point that women appreciate, giving a neat, streamlined look from the front. The capacity fits A4-size items, and there's a convenient pocket on the inside as well. Of course, thanks to its excellent water resistance, this backpack is also a great choice for carrying a laptop.

Msn Bag

This bag, larger than the Backpack Mini, can hold a 13 or 15-inch laptop.

On rainy days, the dry air becomes gently moistened, and the colors of the city's greenery and the dust on the streets are washed away, leaving the scenery vivid and bright. Even when the sky is dark, RAINS is made to bring a light step to those heading out—why not make rainy days something to look forward to with RAINS?
