Refreshingly cool. Make linen & check-pattern skirts your summer staple.

During the summer season, when that open, carefree feeling really takes hold, brightly colored wear never goes out of style. And it's precisely in summer that colorful, playful check-pattern skirts deserve a closer look.

There's an image of "checks = autumn/winter," but in fact this pattern actually pairs beautifully with linen (rinen), a quintessentially summer material. Seeing a check linen skirt flutter lightly in the summer breeze might even make you feel it's a shame to reserve check patterns for autumn and winter alone! This time, we'll introduce the charm of check linen and how to style it for an even more refreshing look.

◎ Linen: the fabric of summer

When it comes to fabric you want to wear in summer, linen is the top choice. It never feels sticky against sweaty skin, and its ever-crisp, dry touch feels wonderful on hot days—a fabric you'll want to reach for every day. Here's what makes linen so appealing.

Being made from the stems of a plant, it naturally has a crisp, clean feel against the skin. Among linen lovers, there are even those who say, "I love that it's durable enough to wear for years, and how it grows more comfortable with every wear"—it's a fabric that inspires real attachment.

Another characteristic of linen is that as you repeat "wear and wash," the fabric's stiffness gradually softens and it takes on a relaxed drape, while at the same time gaining a fluffy volume from trapped air—and this resulting sense of volume suits skirts perfectly.

◎ Many ways to enjoy check linen

On days when you just can't settle on an outfit, a check skirt is a reliable go-to. Since a check pattern brings together so many colors in a single fabric, picking out just one of those colors for your top often results in a surprisingly cohesive coordinate.

Skirt: Combination Skirt BLACK&MAYNE BOG

Top: Crew Neck Short Sleeve Shirt

Bag: FUKURO Mini Shopper

▲This combination skirt pairs a white-and-gray tartan check with black, worn here with a fresh white top for a unified color palette. Enjoying color combinations like this is one reason check linen skirts are so easy to incorporate into an outfit.

▲The kilt skirt from ONEIL OF DUBLIN wraps around the body, creating a clean, elegant silhouette. Made from thin linen for a cool summer feel, the front wraps in a double layer, so there's no need to worry about see-through. The pleats in back hold their shape firmly, giving a light, comfortable wear without feeling restrictive. The look changes from front to back, offering the freedom to enjoy your styling in different ways.

Skirt: Linen Tiered Skirt

Shirt: STAND COLLAR SHIRT

Sandals: Beach Sandals Hemp NATURAL

Bag: VEGETABLE HORSE LEATHER DRAW STRING POUCH M (Drawstring Shoulder Bag)

▲This linen tiered skirt gives even leather accessories, which can look heavy in summer, a refreshing feel. Its refined simplicity makes it easy to pair with anything from a classic short-sleeve T-shirt to a blouse—a truly versatile skirt that works with any style. The elastic waist also allows for a comfortable fit, letting you wear it at whatever position suits you best.

▲When you first wear this linen tiered skirt, it feels somewhat stiff and structured. But as you repeat washing and wearing, the crisp look of the pleats gradually softens, turning it into a skirt that's uniquely your own. This tiered-style skirt, with its charmingly crumpled pleats, pairs well with linen's natural tendency to wrinkle, making daily care simple.

Skirt: Combination Skirt CLAY RED&CARRIGAHORIG

Top: Short Sleeve Cotton Knit SUMMER KNIT P/O

Sandals: M Sandal HYACINTH LEATHER BLACK

Hat: Raffia Hat Delphina Nougat

▲Linen pairs wonderfully with summer fashion accessories like raffia hats and sandals. The design here switches to a terracotta-and-purple tartan check as an accent color, bringing a fresh feel and completely shifting the mood. It also transforms the look of a simple T-shirt, which can otherwise feel monotonous, giving it a healthier, more vibrant impression.

Sandals: Sandal LOU Black

▲The rustic simplicity of linen softens the lively expression of the check pattern, resulting in a skirt with an especially grown-up feel.

Skirt: Linen Long Skirt

Top: Pullover HAYLEY

Sandals: Open Toe Sandal SAN12 NERO

Bag: Akebi Basket (Trapezoid Weave)

Scarf: Scarf/MARINE MESSAGE

▲This check linen skirt is known for its generous volume. The charming black-and-white gingham check pairs beautifully with leather items and an accent scarf for a balanced look, or with a backpack for a sportier take—either way, it makes for an elegant casual style.

▲What stands out is the linen fabric's gently uneven, bumpy texture. By not being overly refined, it achieves just the right amount of polish, resulting in an unpretentious feel suited to everyday wear. The check pattern, which shifts expression as it sways in the breeze, carries both a lovely charm and a mature sensibility, making this piece indispensable for anyone who enjoys dressing with style.

Skirt: Long Swing Skirt

Top: Unisex HOMERUN T-Shirt SHADOW SAX

Sneakers: Deck Shoes L011/M014 WHITE

▲This Long Swing Skirt from ONEIL OF DUBLIN is made of soft, fluffy linen fabric. The voluminous skirt doesn't cling to the body's lines, making it an approachable choice even for those hesitant about tucking in tops. It pairs well with lightweight long coats and voluminous tops alike, making it a piece you can wear from early spring through early autumn.

▲Since it uses linen fabric that's soft right from the start of wear, it's recommended even for those new to linen. The flowing drape is beautifully elegant, and pairing it with a casual logo T-shirt still results in a refined styling.

◎Caring for Linen

Some linen items will shrink when washed. The first time you wash it, it typically shrinks by about 5%, and this rate becomes smaller with each subsequent wash, gradually transforming into a fabric that molds comfortably to your body.

Linen also dries quickly and tends to hold creases easily, so if this concerns you, pay close attention to how you dry it. When hanging linen to dry, try smoothing out wrinkles and shaping the garment while it's still slightly damp (not fully spun dry)—this will result in a much neater finish.

▲Some pieces, like Rockmount's Linen Tiered Skirt, are designed to intentionally make the most of linen's characteristic wrinkles. For this type, we recommend twisting and rolling the garment into a bundle for storage after washing and drying. This way, you can always wear it with the pleats held firmly in place.

This check linen skirt, with its lively colors, makes for a refreshing look that's fun to wear. Having one on hand can completely transform the impression of an otherwise plain solid-color T-shirt into something bright and summer-ready. Why not look for your own go-to piece this summer?

We offer a clothing alteration service.

Up until now, whenever a customer's beloved item broke, we've worked with the maker as much as possible to establish a repair process, but when it came to clothing, we hadn't yet reached the point of offering our own dedicated ZUTTO service. However, with the addition of an in-house atelier for clothing production, "clothing alteration and repair" has become possible, and we've decided to begin offering it to customers as a paid service.

"I'd like to shorten the hem of the skirt I bought by 3cm."

"I have a hole in a knit item I own, and I'd like it darned."

"I'd like the hem of my denim pants taken up while keeping the aging on the hem as it is."

We accept repair and alteration requests like these for clothing items. Of course this includes items purchased at ZUTTO, but we will also do our best to accept items purchased at other shops whenever possible.
