Discovering what you truly need. The aesthetics of subtraction, learned through STANDARD SUPPLY wallets

Now that smartphone payments have become central to daily life, many people feel that the wallet they currently own is too bulky, or they've never quite found a wallet that feels right and are instead using one they chose somewhat casually. If you sort through the contents of a wallet you've used for years, you might find it's accumulated all sorts of things you didn't actually need. So why not take this opportunity to think about what kind of wallet truly suits you? Here at ZUTTO, we compare the simple, functional wallets from STANDARD SUPPLY—long a favorite among our customers—to offer some hints for choosing the right wallet.

Why are STANDARD SUPPLY wallets so popular?

A simple design that blends naturally into daily life

STANDARD SUPPLY wallets have a simple, clean design that pursues only what is truly necessary. Their products feel like a perfect match for today's lifestyle of "only what you need, in the amount you need."

Durability and a color lineup that even leather beginners can enjoy

The leather is treated with the same scratch- and stain-resistant coating used on luxury car seats and sofas, so the texture holds up well over time without any special care—making it easy for anyone who feels unsure about leather maintenance to use with confidence. The vividly colored PAL series is also appealing for its bright lineup of colors, making it easy to find a wallet that matches your personal style.

The functional beauty of subtraction, pursued for ease of use

Whether you're a card person or a cash person, everyone uses a wallet differently—but finding one that feels just right comes down to a pursuit of the optimal function. Paring things down rather than piling on more features is actually far more difficult, and being able to finish that process in a neat, beautiful way is one of the charms of STANDARD SUPPLY.

Which wallet is right for you?

STANDARD SUPPLY wallets are minimal yet great at organizing your belongings. We compared them while answering questions like "they look similar, but how are they different?" and "how does this one actually feel to use?"

First, let's look at the difference in card capacity

Among STANDARD SUPPLY wallets, the ACCORDION COMPACT WALLET holds the most cards, thanks to its accordion-style pockets that let you fit plenty of cards inside. Beyond serving as a card case, it's also appealing for having ample space to hold bills and coins.

ACCORDION COMPACT WALLET

The PAL LONG FLAP WALLET is notable for its vertically arranged card case. In fact, there's also a horizontal space between the sections for holding cards, letting you make full use of the long wallet's shape—so it doesn't fall behind in storage capacity either.

Because the leather used in the PAL series is soft and supple, these wallets can actually hold more coins than they appear to. When it comes to cash capacity, the PAL LONG FLAP WALLET comes out on top, but the compact Wallet PAL BIFOLD PURSE can also hold bills unfolded, thanks to its roomy construction—making it a great choice for anyone who wants to carry a lot of cash in a compact wallet.

▲The leather in the PAL series is soft enough to open the coin case's opening wide, making it easy to use.

Comparing them side by side, there's still so much more to dig into in terms of both function and design. Our staff actually used each wallet to check details that photos alone can't reveal. For wallets where size might be a concern, we've also included a reference bag for comparison—so please use it alongside the size of a bag you already own or one you're thinking of purchasing to help make your choice.

1. For those who want to carry lots of cards

ACCORDION COMPACT WALLET

Cards: up to 35 (10 × 3, plus 5)

Bills: stored unfolded

Coins: L-shaped zippered case

With three accordion-style card pockets that each hold up to 10 cards, this is one of the most spacious wallets in the STANDARD SUPPLY lineup. It's a wallet we'd recommend for anyone who wants to carry a large number of cards.

We actually tried loading it with cards

Compared to when it's empty, the difference is striking. You can really see why it's called an "accordion." We actually loaded it with 35 cards, but when you're first using it, stiff, thick cards like credit cards may be a bit hard to pull out once stacked in a pocket. Since leather naturally stretches over time, we'd suggest starting out with fewer cards, or mixing in thinner cards like shop cards.

▲The trick to fitting a lot of cards in is to combine them with thinner ones.

When a pocket is packed full, we found it easier to pull out the whole bundle and search through it rather than removing cards one at a time. For example, you could designate the three pockets for payment cards, a hospital ID card, and shop cards respectively, or organize them by frequency of use to make things even more convenient.

The zipper pocket holds coins, and there's a deep pocket on the side of the wallet for bills and receipts, so even with the card pockets full, there's no trouble fitting in cash.

What kind of small bag can hold this much bulk?

Many people probably want a wallet that holds plenty of cards, but still prefer to carry as small a bag as possible. So we tested just how small a bag could actually accommodate it.

One of the smallest bags we carry at ZUTTO is the Box Bag Micro. It looks compact, but it has enough depth and gusset that the wallet fit easily even when fully loaded with cards. There's still room left over even with the wallet inside, so you could also fit a phone or a handkerchief.

The Box Bag Micro has a gusset depth of 6.5cm, so if you want to use a wallet packed with cards, choosing a bag with a gusset of 6.5cm or more should let you carry it without straining the bag. Use this as a reference for sizing.

2. For those who want to keep their belongings neatly organized

PAL LONG FLAP WALLET (Long Flap Wallet)

Cards: up to 28 (2 × 6, 5 × 3, plus 1)

Bills: stored unfolded

Coins: with zipper

A well-organized long wallet that keeps both cash and cards neatly separated. Made from soft, supple leather, it holds more than its appearance suggests. In particular, the card pockets include three vertical-facing pockets and three horizontal-facing pockets, allowing you to sort cards by how often you use them—a functional touch that reflects STANDARD SUPPLY's understated attention to detail.

We actually tried loading it with cards

For ease of retrieval, we'd recommend keeping just one card in each vertical-facing pocket, though we found that two cards could be stored without any trouble removing them. The cards peek out of the pocket, so you can easily pinch them with your fingertips and slide them out. The horizontal-facing pockets seem well suited to holding folded receipts or an omamori (protective charm), in addition to cards.

Because it's built with plenty of depth, it can hold a good amount of both bills and coins. The PAL LONG FLAP WALLET is made from relatively soft leather, and adding cards gives it a kind of internal structure, helping it hold its shape rather than sagging out of form. Loading it with cards seems to be the key to using it in a well-balanced way.

What kind of pochette pairs well with a long wallet?

If you use a long wallet, you may have found yourself relying on a second, smaller wallet just because it wouldn't fit in anything but a large bag. Here's a suggestion for a pochette that lets you carry a long wallet compactly.

The Leather Bag MINI FLEX has a rounded, charming shape paired with a leather texture that suits both elegant and casual styles alike. It's compact, but has enough capacity to hold even a long wallet. Its simple, translucent quality also pairs nicely with the look and feel of the PAL LONG FLAP WALLET.

It also has an inner pocket, so you won't have to worry about your phone or keys getting hidden behind the long wallet and becoming hard to find.

PAL FLAP WALLET (Flap Wallet)

Cards: up to 14 (2 × 4, 2 × 3)

Bills: folded in half

Coins: with zipper

It's a compact wallet that keeps the functional vertical card pockets of the PAL LONG FLAP WALLET (long flap wallet) while shrinking it down in size.

Trying to fit cards in it…

The card capacity is 14 slots, half that of a long wallet. For staff members who normally carry 10 or fewer cards, we were surprised at how much the compact PAL FLAP WALLET could hold. Unlike a long wallet, we worried that filling it up with cards might stretch the leather and make it harder to take out bills and coins, but perhaps thanks to the accordion-like shape of the card pockets—along with the softness of the leather—we didn't notice any difference in ease of access compared to when it was empty.

Would it work with a shoulder bag that has no gusset?

The PAL FLAP WALLET stays compact even when packed full, making it a great choice for thin, small shoulder bags as well.

The sashiko-woven texture paired with the leather gives it both a cute and refined qualityMicro Shoulder Small. Although it has a gusset-less design, the bag's opening expands enough that even with the wallet inside, we were able to fasten the button without any awkward bulging. You can also use the extra space for a smartphone or handkerchief when you want to carry only the essentials. By the way, the PAL LONG FLAP WALLET introduced earlier just barely didn't fit, so please use that as a size reference.

3. For those who want to keep cash and cards minimal

Wallet PAL BIFOLD PURSE

Cards: up to 6 (3 x 2)

Bills: stored unfolded

Coins: with L-shaped zipper

The PAL BIFOLD PURSE is perfectly suited to people who mostly pay with their smartphone and only need the bare minimum in cash and cards. Folded up, it's small enough to fit right in the palm of your hand. Despite its compact appearance, it lets you store bills unfolded, making it a great choice for anyone who uses more bills than coins.

We actually tried using it

Just looking at photos, we thought the fact that the center of the bill pocket isn't sewn shut might make it hard to balance items on either side, but we found that this very division into left and right pockets actually made it easier to take bills in and out.

Turning the wallet with one hand opens up a gap in the bill pocket, so you can simply slide bills in and out—something we found easier than with other wallets. It was also very easy to pull out just a single bill.

PAL FLAP WALLET S

Cards: up to 4 (3, 1)

Bills: stored bifold

Coins: round zipper

The PAL FLAP WALLET S is a slightly smaller version of the PAL FLAP WALLET from the same series, and it's the smallest wallet in the STANDARD SUPPLY lineup. Its size is nearly identical to the PAL BIFOLD PURSE introduced earlier, but this one is lighter in weight. Since you can access your cards and cash without having to switch how you're holding it, it's especially easy to use even for women with small hands.

▲From top:PAL LONG FLAP WALLET, PAL FLAP WALLET, PAL FLAP WALLET S

What we found using it…

The pocket where bifolded bills fit snugly isn't stitched all the way to the edge, leaving a bit of seam allowance, which made it easy to slide bills in and out. It's also just the right height to let you check how many bills are inside even while they're stored, which adds a nice bit of everyday convenience.

Of all the wallets introduced here, the PAL FLAP WALLET S is the only one with a round-shaped zipper, and we found it opens more easily than a straight zipper would. Despite its compact look, it's clear that thought has gone into usability in many small details. The coin pocket also opens wide, making it easy to see what's inside—another nice touch.

This may partly be because the wallet is still new, but we found that fitting in a single credit card felt just right when taking cards in and out. If you'd like to carry 2 to 3 cards, we recommend gradually increasing the number over time so as not to put too much strain on the leather.

4. For those who want to use it freely

COMPACT W-ZIP CASE

Cards: 20 or more (4, 15)

Bills: stored bifold

Coins: U-shaped zipper, with divider

The COMPACT W-ZIP CASE has a simple structure divided into two main storage spaces. Compared to the PAL series, the leather has a firmer, sturdier feel, so despite its compact size, it's easy to handle. What you put in each space is entirely up to you—so beyond cash and cards, you could also use it for keys, accessories, or other valuables.

For example, here's one way to use it

If you carry a lot of cash, you can separate bills and coins on each side. The coin space has a divider, so you can keep 10-yen and 100-yen coins apart, or even use it to store keys.

For those who carry many cards, it can be used as a card case. The upper space holds 4 cards in the card pocket and 15 in the center, while the lower space holds 5 in each pocket. There's also a space on the back of the wallet for an IC card or the like, allowing you to carry a total of 30 cards.

We also recommend keeping cash and your frequently used cards in your main wallet, and using the COMPACT W-ZIP CASE as a second wallet for shop cards, hospital ID cards, and the like.
