It's already been two years since ZUTTO's atelier began accepting alteration requests. From size adjustments to fixing a beloved knit that has come unraveled, or repairing a favorite dress that was accidentally torn, we've received all kinds of requests and handled the alterations ourselves. We've also had the chance to hear directly from customers about their feelings toward the pieces they bring in, and it makes us truly happy to help everyone develop even more attachment to their favorite piece and wear it for years to come.

Among these alteration requests, one of the most common is adjusting skirt length. Since a skirt's overall impression changes so much depending on the wearer's height, we've come to realize that many people wish they could adjust the length from the standard, ready-made size.

This skirt is carefully finished by our in-house designer and pattern-maker, who sews the length to match each customer's request. At most other brands, design and alterations are handled by different people, but at ZUTTO, the fact that the designer herself does the finishing work is a major point of difference. This means there's never a mismatch between the original design vision and the altered result, and even detailed requests can be accommodated without compromising the design.

What's more, while semi-order items typically can't be returned once ordered, this skirt is constructed so the length can be adjusted without cutting the fabric, which means we can accept returns or length changes even after you've tried it on. It's also possible to have the length altered again after you've been wearing it for a while, so you can adjust it to match changes in your taste, age, or where you plan to wear it—a feature you won't find in other skirts. Even if you've had it shortened once, it can be lengthened again up to a maximum of 85cm.

A design you can wear in relaxed comfort

We made this skirt with the goal of creating something you can pair effortlessly with everyday outfits. Precisely because the design is simple at first glance, the quality of the fabric and the silhouette become all the more important. To keep the balance right with tops, we added tucks at the front, creating a soft, billowing volume with movement when worn. It's a design that lets the humble, airy texture of the linen truly shine.

There's a slit at the back hem, so even in the longer lengths, you can move easily and wear it with a light, breezy feel. (The depth of the back slit is also adjusted to match each length.)

We offer this skirt in BLUE and BLACK. These soft, gentle colors, which suit linen's humble texture so well, are created using a traditional dyeing method called "araki-zome" (rough-boiling dye). Craftsmen in Toyama have inherited this masterful technique, long preserved by a venerable dyeing factory in Tokyo, and it's their dyed fabric that's used here. This dyeing method, revived through research into Edo-period dyeing techniques, requires the fabric to be dyed slowly and carefully in vats much smaller than those used in ordinary dyeing. Taking the extra time allows the fabric to be gently worked—so gently that the very core of the thread loosens—resulting in a softness that's gentle on the skin. Linen is often thought of as stiff at first, gradually softening with use, but this fabric is different: it's soft from the very beginning. Touch it, and you'll be captivated by its plush, airy feel.

The wrinkles born from this softness are another charm of arataki-zome (rough-boiled dyeing). The fine creases that naturally form as you wear it give off the texture of linen that has been cherished and used for a long time.

Four Lengths to Choose From

The total length comes in four options: 70cm / 75cm / 80cm / 85cm. With a 15cm range, the overall impression shifts significantly from midi to long length. If you have a skirt in your own wardrobe whose length you particularly love, we recommend measuring it as a reference for your choice. From a refreshing, bright midi length to an elegantly composed long length—since it's made of linen, every length gives a light, airy impression that's comfortable to wear even in the hot season.

Two members of our staff tried the skirt in different lengths.

To see how the impression changes with length, we had two staff members try on all four lengths.

First up is Staff F, who is 156cm tall.

At 70cm, the length falls around the calf, and at 85cm, it's long enough to cover the ankles.

Which length would she choose? 80cm

I usually tend to choose longer lengths around 80–85cm, so I picked this one.

Gathered from the waist, the linen spreads out in a soft, three-dimensional silhouette that's really charming. Personally, I've often chosen skirts with a straight, flowing drape, but wearing this one, I felt the cool, breathable comfort typical of linen that doesn't cling to the skin—and I realized this kind of skirt is better suited for summer wear. Both the blue and black are calm, understated colors with a simple design, so I don't think there's any outfit it wouldn't go with.

I hadn't chosen a 70cm length for myself very often before, but with this skirt, the linen fabric combined with its simple, composed impression means it doesn't look too young or juvenile, which makes me want to try a length I wouldn't normally reach for.

Next, Staff O, who is 162cm tall.

At 70cm, the length is a midi that fully covers the knees, and at 85cm, it's long enough to completely cover the calves.

Which length would she choose? 85cm

I usually gravitate toward longer skirts, and this length felt the most natural to me. Shorter lengths give a fuller, more voluminous and cute impression, while longer lengths drape down more, giving a calmer, more composed feel.

The fabric is light and cool, but because the color is dark, there's no see-through issue even though the material is thin, so you can wear it with peace of mind. It's designed to spread out softly and naturally, giving it just the right amount of volume, so it should pair well with a variety of tops. It works with sandals or heels, so you won't struggle to choose shoes in the morning, but I'd also love to try a more casual look by pairing it with colorful socks and sneakers.
