As the seasons change, refine your sleep environment. Bedding and scent ideas for a good night's sleep.

We're gradually feeling the arrival of summer as the seasons shift. Before full-blown summer arrives, we have the rainy season to get through, when the body tends to get chilled from the rain—so this is a time when choosing not just clothing but bedding can be tricky. For those who want to reconsider their bedding, we'd like to introduce some tips on how to choose it.

Thinking about main bedding and supplementary bedding

When thinking about bedding, we recommend preparing two items: your main bedding, plus a supplementary piece for temperature regulation (such as a towel blanket or gauze blanket). During a period like now, when temperatures fluctuate easily, supplementary bedding is especially useful.

With that premise in mind, another point worth paying attention to is "material." We'll introduce this along with some brands.

Recommended for spring and summer. Linen material for a comfortable stay even in sweaty weather

"SaFo/heart" Linen Series

Recommended for main bedding

Washable Genuine Linen Down Blanket

【POINT】Absorbs sweat and dries quickly | Fully machine washable/dryable | A down comforter that can be used without a cover

This down blanket from SaFo/heart wraps high-quality down feathers in linen fabric, which has a naturally cool-to-the-touch feel. The maker, Heart Co., Ltd., is a bedding manufacturer founded in Kochi Prefecture in 1988. In order to deliver safe, reliable products free of fluorescent brighteners and additives, they manufacture and sell genuine organic bedding certified by international organic standards.

Among natural fibers, linen offers excellent breathability and moisture absorption, and it's a durable material that resists staining. It also has the characteristic of resisting fading, shrinking, and losing its shape even with repeated washing, making it especially recommended for spring and summer when you sweat a lot.

Generally, a duvet is often paired with a separately sold cover, but this down blanket can be enjoyed for its linen texture without a cover at all. If you prefer, you can add a different cover to use it beyond summer as well, making it a design that's easy to use whether you tend to run hot or cold.

It has 8 loops so that a duvet cover can be easily attached. See the matching linen cover here >>

The down inside is carefully washed—almost as if rinsing rice—using 100% natural Marseille soap and groundwater, which reduces the odor of the down while giving it a fluffy texture. This washing method, which requires considerable time and cost, is said to be extremely rare even by global standards. Because it uses 100% natural Marseille soap, it's bedding that's gentle on both the environment and the body.

Since we began carrying it last summer, it has been very popular, and some customers have chosen it not just for summer but for autumn and winter as well. If you're using this down blanket, we recommend pairing it with the same genuine linen series.

Cotton material, easy to use all year round

A material popular throughout the year is "cotton." SaFo/heart, which we introduced earlier, also offers a bedding series in organic cotton.

Recommended as main bedding for spring and summer

Organic Blanket (Single)

【POINT】100% organic cotton | Can also be used as a fitted sheet | A supplementary piece of bedding in winter

Heart Co., Ltd., mentioned earlier, is actually the only maker in Japan producing bedding from organic cotton. They handle everything in-house, from hand-loosening carefully selected organic cotton to processing, molding, and sewing.

Unlike the crisp texture of linen, this blanket has a soft, gentle springiness and a smooth feel against the skin. It's gentle on the skin and blends naturally with it, and you can sense the maker's dedication to materials in every touch. One reason it can be used throughout the year is that there are so many ways to use it.

During comfortable seasons like spring and autumn, use it as a single blanket on its own. In summer, lay it beneath your body to absorb sweat while you sleep and enjoy comfortable rest. And come winter, layer it over a regular blanket as supplementary bedding to prevent heat from escaping and stay warm. Since the blanket itself is light, layering it doesn't change how comfortable it feels to sleep.

This bedding has been confirmed free of harmful substances and chemicals at every stage, from raw material to finished product, so it's also recommended for those with sensitive skin, chemical allergies, or conditions like atopic dermatitis and asthma that can be aggravated by dust or mites.

It comes with a storage bag that has a handle.

SaFo/heart's organic cotton bedding line also includes pillow covers and sheets.

There's also the Organic Box Fitted Sheet, which makes setup easy.

Another cotton bedding series we recommend is KLIPPAN's cotton blanket (chenille cotton blanket).

Chenille Cotton Single Blanket (140×180) Margaret Rose

A long-established Swedish brand founded in 1879. It's so well known that virtually everyone in Sweden recognizes the name, and it's also widely loved in Japan as a classic brand. Committed to natural fibers, they handle everything from weaving and dyeing to final production at their own factory, maintaining absolute quality throughout their craftsmanship.

The name comes from the "chenille yarn" used to make it—yarn where the small fibers sticking out from the twisted thread's surface are cut away, giving it a mole-like texture. Because the excess fibers are trimmed away, the fabric has a pleasant feel against the skin and a clean, crisp finish.

Beyond use as bedding, consider bringing it along to outdoor events like camping, sports days, or watching sports matches. Since it can be washed whole in a washing machine, you can take it outside without worry.

It also works wonderfully as a rug. A truly versatile blanket.

For secondary bedding, try a gauze blanket or towel blanket. In summer, it can even serve as your main bedding

8-Layer Gauze Blanket, Specially Ordered from Heart

Recommended for secondary bedding

【Special Order】8-Layer Gauze Blanket Single GREY

【POINT】The gentle touch, absorbency, and warmth unique to gauze | Voluminous yet light 8-layer gauze

This is a ZUTTO original gauze blanket made for us by Heart Co., Ltd. It's a special-order version of the brand's signature 8-layer gauze blanket, made in a pale gray fabric with a hint of light blue. The gentle color expresses the soft, fluffy texture perfectly, and pairs beautifully with bedding in clean, natural or white tones.

As the name "8-layer" suggests, it's made by layering eight sheets of fabric, each woven differently. It holds air well for excellent warmth, and the material is 100% highly absorbent cotton. Even the sewing thread is cotton—a testament to the attention to detail.

Another major feature is the weaving method. While most multi-layer gauze blankets are made by stacking layers of gauze and sewing the edges together, this 8-layer gauze blanket is woven directly into eight layers as a single piece—a highly demanding technique. The thickness of the thread is also varied: thicker threads are woven into the inner layers for added volume, while finer threads are used on the surface that touches the skin for a gentler feel. The skill required to bind eight layers of differing densities into a single gauze blanket is truly the work of master craftsmen.

The texture against the skin is exceptionally pleasant, offering a gentleness and sense of comfort that other bedding simply doesn't provide. Many people prefer gauze for anything that touches their skin directly. It's highly absorbent yet retains warmth, so during sweatier seasons any perspiration dries quickly for comfort, and on chilly days, tucking it between your main bedding and your body wraps you in soft material for a warm night's sleep.

A precious gauze blanket woven into eight layers in a single process, with a production capacity of only 10 pieces per day.

In spring and in autumn/winter, it makes a wonderful addition to your main bedding, and come summer, it can serve as your main bedding on its own. This kind of secondary bedding can also be layered for extra warmth, and it's convenient to have a few on hand for rotating while washing.

A towel blanket is another great option for secondary bedding.

"kontex" Towel Blanket

Recommended for secondary bedding

Brera Towel Blanket 160×210

【POINT】Waffle weave with excellent absorbency and quick-drying properties | Less surface contact with skin keeps you comfortable even in sweaty seasons

kontex is a towel brand founded in 1951. Based in Imabari, a cotton textile production area surrounded by the Seto Inland Sea, the brand offers products you can trust from start to finish—carefully selected materials, dyeing, weaving, and sewing, all crafted with Japan's outstanding sensibility and skill.

This plush waffle-weave towel blanket has less surface contact with your skin, keeping you feeling crisp and comfortable even when you sweat. It also boasts excellent breathability and quick-drying properties, making it an ideal material for bedding prone to humidity in both summer and winter.

Another reason to love it for years to come: with each wash, the weave tightens up and the bumpy texture becomes even more pronounced.

"Sleep Perfume": Wrap Yourself in Your Favorite Scent Before Bed

Why not rely on "scent" to improve the quality of your sleep? "Sleep perfume," as the name suggests, refers to perfume applied before going to bed.

Falling asleep enveloped in a lovely scent helps you relax and improves your sleep quality, and in the morning, you can wake up to the faint lingering trace of your favorite fragrance.

If the scent is too strong or lingers too long, it can stimulate the brain and actually make it harder to fall asleep. For this reason, when choosing a scent to wear to bed, we recommend an eau de cologne with a light touch. Its scent lasts only one to two hours, so even if you apply it right before bed, it won't interfere with your sleep.

Be sure to also check out our staff review after trying a bedtime scent >>

If you'd like the scent to fill your entire bedroom, try applying it to your bedding, such as your pillow or bed cover. Each time you turn over in your sleep, your favorite fragrance will spread throughout the room, putting you in a good mood before you drift off.

*In this photo, we used the Eau de Cologne Travel Spray 10ml.

If you want to enjoy a strong scent, apply it somewhere close to your face, such as your pillow. If you prefer a subtle scent, apply it near the foot of your bed cover instead. Have fun creating an environment where you can sleep comfortably.
