There's a general tendency in the world to consider items that can be used in two or three different ways as "good things," but is that really true? A "tool"—something born for a specific purpose—becomes a true gap-filling item precisely by sharpening that single function until it reaches the places an itch demands to be scratched. For example, we all have latent desires we're not even aware of, like "I want to enjoy my favorite ramen even more" or "I wish I could do something about my wet folding umbrella on a rainy day." Satisfying these desires brings us a sense of fulfillment. This time, we introduce masterpieces that fill in such "gaps." Please enjoy this guide as if turning its pages one by one.

Reason for Selection
This is a personal story, but the first image that came to mind was the scrub brush we used to wash vegetables grown in my family's field, right there in the yard. Unlike the cheap brushes used for scrubbing sinks or sneakers, its bristle tips are soft, and even with repeated use it remains attractive, gentle on the hands. Feeling a certain nostalgia, I selected it because I thought it would let people reconfirm why some products come to be loved by people for so long.
Why It's ZUTTO
This scrub brush is made from domestically grown shuro, harvested strand by strand by skilled craftsmen using techniques and cultivation methods passed down since ancient times. It has a simple design that never grows tiresome and can be used for years. The reason it lasts so long is its gentle feel on the hands, with almost none of the prickliness you'd expect when holding it.

What sparked my interest was learning that chopsticks vary in thickness and material—not just the Japanese chopsticks we use every day, but also those used in China and Korea, or the long cooking chopsticks chefs use—and that each type offers its own kind of usability. The ramen chopsticks made by HYOZAEMON, who carries on Japan's traditional chopstick culture, are a luxurious item that any ramen lover should absolutely get their hands on.
Why It's ZUTTO
Obama City in Fukui Prefecture, where Hyozaemon Co., Ltd. is located, is the production center for Wakasa-nuri lacquered chopsticks, boasting over 80% of the national market share and standing as one of Japan's premier chopstick-producing regions. The chopsticks made by HYOZAEMON, a chopstick maker founded in this area, use urushi (Japanese lacquer)—specifically "virgin urushi" containing no synthetic chemical coatings—a material that has been treasured in daily life for over 6,000 years. This makes them products that can be used with peace of mind by everyone from small children to the elderly. What's more, so that chopsticks—a part of Japanese culture—don't become disposable items, the company offers a repair service. These are the kind of chopsticks that make you want to be grateful for your daily meals and cherish the act of eating.

A tea roaster made in Iga, Mie Prefecture, a renowned pottery-producing region. The clay from Iga's ancient Lake Biwa stratum has an exceptionally high fire resistance and is known as clay well-suited for heat-resistant ceramics. It is excellent at retaining and storing heat, and Iga clay is said to have far-infrared effects that draw out the natural flavors of ingredients and give dishes a mellow, rounded taste. Beyond hojicha (roasted green tea), it can also be used to roast other types of tea, sesame seeds, raw coffee beans, salt, ginkgo nuts, and brown rice.

Usually, when brewing tea, all we do is put tea leaves into a teapot. I had long admired the idea of adding a bit more to that everyday step—enjoying fresh tea leaves and the aroma of roasting them. Though modest, I selected this hoping it could become something that adds a bit of color to everyone's daily life.
Why It's ZUTTO
The tea roaster, a Japanese kitchen tool with a long history, is a timeless masterpiece of daily life that never fades. The aroma of "roasting tea" embodies both the care taken to fully enjoy even a single cup of tea and the spirit of hospitality shown toward guests. TOJIKITONYA, a maker devoted to carrying on the craftsman's skills and the spirit of passing things down that have accompanied the long history of Japanese food culture, revives pottery that stays close to daily life with a modern touch.

A palm-sized cube made of bamboo charcoal that purifies air, eliminates odors, and regulates humidity, while also removing ammonia, formaldehyde, and toluene (harmful substances said to cause sick building syndrome). It's made from high-quality bamboo grown in the Yura River basin in northern Kyoto, carefully carbonized over a long period by skilled artisans at a bamboo charcoal workshop on the Tango Peninsula. The honeycomb (hexagonal) structure of its pores maximizes the effectiveness of the bamboo charcoal. Sun-drying it once a month restores some of the charcoal's effectiveness.

Why We Selected It
I've always admired the antique wooden pieces you find at flea markets and antique fairs. This sturdy little box is the kind of item you can picture developing a rich, handsome patina after ten or twenty years of use—the kind of piece that makes you want to keep it for a long time, which is why we selected it.

A lunch box from Wajima Kirimoto that fits two triangular onigiri perfectly. It's made using asunaro, a tree species unique to Ishikawa Prefecture planted in the Noto region, which has long been used extensively in Wajima lacquerware. The moisture in the onigiri is naturally regulated by the effect of the wood, and the fragrance of the hinoki cypress makes your everyday onigiri taste even better. Beyond just carrying food, it can also be used as a serving dish for guests or as a container for sweets on the table.

Why We Selected It
On busy mornings, it's not always possible to make a bento with many different dishes. But even so, we want to enjoy a lunch that makes the middle of the day something to look forward to. Hoping to fulfill that wish, we selected this onigiri box from Wajima Kiritomo. Even if it's not an elaborate bento, this is a piece that lets you savor onigiri made with care and heart.
Why It's ZUTTO
Wajima Kiritomo, the brand behind this piece, hopes people will use Wajima-nuri (Wajima lacquerware) in everyday life, and they never let up in their effort to carry their skills into the future while making the most of them. For example, the wood used in the bento boxes of this "Asunaro Series" must go through a process, after being sourced as timber, of settling until its moisture content becomes stable—this minimizes warping and helps the wood last longer. The wood is left to dry in the sun for three years, in a well-ventilated place for one year, and then in a warehouse for another five to six years before it's used. You can sense in this the hope that the series will serve as an entry point, drawing people's interest toward urushi (Japanese lacquer).
Item Overview
A compact, wa-modern katsuobushi shaver. It's carved from solid wood, giving it a seamless form with no joints. Made using a kanna (plane) crafted by a plane maker whose workshop was founded in 1946, each unit is test-shaved with real katsuobushi before shipping, so it's ready to use right away with no blade adjustment needed.
When Sales Began at ZUTTO

Reason for the Selection
I was drawn to it out of admiration for the tool-like presence of the katsuobushi shaver my mother used back home. As an adult, once I began cooking for myself, I came to want to cherish the ingredients I use and treat each meal with care, which led me to select this piece.
Why It's ZUTTO
Made from beech wood used in high-end furniture, it was crafted with the aim of achieving a simple form that would be loved for a long time, unlike anything else out there. Finished with natural walnut oil that doesn't hinder the wood's breathing, it resists stains and keeps its beauty for a long time. Because it's made of solid wood, its color deepens with character over the years.Aftercare support from the craftsmen is also part of the appeal—one set of service covers polishing, repair of the plane body, application of walnut oil, and a test shave.
As we've seen, each of these ten items serves a different purpose, yet each has its own reason for being ZUTTO. What they have in common is time-honored wisdom, materials that grow richer with age, and a feel that makes you want to keep using them. Unlike versatile products designed to serve many purposes at once, these things combine the convenience of filling in the small gaps of daily life with a sense of warmth—and precisely because people have kept reaching for them over the years, they are treasured everyday items that bring a sense of richness to life.
