A jersey-fabric top that works as a sweater substitute, wearable from winter through spring

A sweater is essential for getting through cold winter days, but wearing one every day can make your outfits feel repetitive. Wool sweaters also have their downsides, such as pilling from friction and easily attracting dust. So what could take the place of a sweater? And what kind of wear can you keep using once spring arrives? Our suggestion is jersey fabric. Here we introduce the characteristics unique to jersey, along with recommended ways to style it.

What Is Jersey Fabric?

When you hear the word "jersey," many people probably picture sportswear. Stretchy, resistant to tearing even during exercise, and made from a somewhat thick fabric—these are exactly the characteristics of jersey.

Jersey is a general term for knit fabric made using plain stockinette stitch, produced by cutting and sewing a single bolt of fabric. It's said to get its name from having originally been developed as a knit for fishermen working on the island of Jersey in the UK. Under the umbrella of jersey fall many different types of knit fabrics, ranging from the visually very simple stockinette stitch, to rib knits that stretch well horizontally, to interlock knits with double-faced construction.

The process of cutting and sewing piece by piece—the body, the sleeves, and so on—is the same as with cut-and-sew garments.

Can Jersey Replace a Sweater?

As you can imagine from sportswear jerseys, the comfortable, fitted feel unique to jersey has in recent years been incorporated into many types of clothing. Among jersey garments, some are made with a tightly packed thread density and an extra-thick fabric to boost warmth, so choosing one in place of a sweater on a cold winter day will keep you plenty warm. On the other hand, if the material is something like cotton, it becomes a convenient piece you can keep wearing into early spring. Depending on the fabric density and the materials used, jersey is a flexible fabric that adapts to the season.

There are also jersey pieces made even warmer by padding them with wadding.

Incorporating Jersey into Everyday Outfits

Now let's take a closer look at what kinds of jersey clothing are out there, and how to incorporate them into your wardrobe. This time we've picked out four different tops.

UNISEX Cut-off Pullover / smoothday

The smoothday UNISEX Cut-off Pullover is made from 100% wool. Finished in a felted fabric, it has a neat, clean impression. With a nice sense of definition and a refined finish, it's recommended for polished, mode-inspired styles. Making use of the top's silhouette, try pairing it with slim-fit pants, or add feminine accents like glossy accessories, shoes, or a bag to bring the look into balance.

Top: UNISEX Cut-off Pullover (TOP GRAY)

Bracelet: Sterling Silver Bangle WIDE SBW14

Here's an outfit that pairs slim-fit denim with simple heeled shoes for a clean, streamlined overall look. Since the UNISEX Cut-off Pullover has slightly long sleeves, it also looks lovely casually pushed up to reveal the wrist line. A silver bangle and leather pumps add a touch of luxury and pull the look together stylishly. For outerwear, a long coat would also work beautifully.

Quilted Top / HAVERSACK

The HAVERSACK Quilted Top is also a jersey garment. Wadding is packed inside the wool jersey fabric, making it a piece with even greater warmth.

As you can imagine from a down coat, packing in wadding inevitably adds volume—but by applying herringbone-pattern quilted stitching to the surface and adding a panel switch at the sleeves, the volume is kept in check, allowing warmth and style to coexist. The surface has a subtle, understated sheen, giving it a refined finish that never tips over into overly casual territory.

Top: Quilted Top (BLACK)

Shirt: Supima Cotton Double Gauze Shirt (WHITE)

Pants: Checked Wide Pants (GREY/NAVY)

Shoes: Sneaker Tennis Leather White

What's great about the Quilted Top is that, despite its relaxed fit, the length isn't too long, so it never looks sloppy. It's also easy to layer—for example, wear a shirt in a color that contrasts with the top, and let it peek out at the collar, cuffs, or hem for a stylish touch. The fact that it's not too long also has the advantage of being easy to balance with voluminous bottoms like wide pants. Warm enough on its own, yet also easy to layer, the Quilted Top is a versatile piece.

Wool Pullover with Gusset / FilMelange

The FilMelange wool pullover with gusset is a jersey wear item featuring a V-shaped gusset at the chest as its defining detail. The thick wool fabric is tightly woven, giving it exceptional warmth and flexibility. While jersey wear tends to have an overly voluminous look, this wool pullover with gusset comes with rib-material finger holes at the cuffs, and a drawcord added at the hem lets you cinch it to your preferred fit.

Because the material is wool, it creates not just the usual casual "jersey feel" but an impression of quality as well. It's also a piece we'd recommend to anyone who struggles with sweaters that easily develop pills. Since you can adjust the silhouette to your liking, this is a top we'd love to put in the hands of anyone trying jersey wear coordination for the first time.

Top: Wool Pullover with Gusset (NAVY)

Skirt: Wool Tiered Skirt (RED CHECK)

Shoes: Short Boots AGIO30 LEATHER BLACK

This jersey top, with its volume kept in moderate check, pairs easily even with bottoms that flare out to the sides, like tiered skirts. Matching the color of the top with your footwear avoids a mismatched impression and makes it easy to incorporate an accent color into your outfit. Because the wool pullover with gusset pairs well with both casual bottoms and neat, more refined ones, it's a handy staple you can reach for in place of a sweater.

UNISEX Fleece-Lined Pullover / smoothday

And last but not least, the UNISEX fleece-lined pullover from smoothday shares the same shape as the UNISEX cut-off pullover introduced earlier, but is made of cotton, with a fluffy fleece lining inside. It has a three-dimensional shape from the shoulders down to the hem, and with elastic sewn into the back of the hem, its appearance changes subtly depending on whether it's viewed from the front, side, or back.

The UNISEX fleece-lined pullover is voluminous yet lightweight in construction, and its fluffy texture wraps you in warmth. Being made of cotton, it's also an item you can wear on into spring.

Top: UNISEX Fleece-Lined Pullover (TOP GRAY)

Knit cap: Knit Cap Muffi (Birch Yellow)

Skirt: [Special Order] RELAX DENIM Skirt CHARCOAL HEATHER

Shoes: Short Boots TEXAS19 LEATHER TAUPE

Model's height: 158cm (same for all photos below)

The UNISEX fleece-lined pullover is roomy and voluminous enough to be worn even by slim men, but its pattern creates balance simply by wearing it, giving it the pleasant quality of working with almost any bottoms. For example, pairing it with a below-the-knee tight skirt and heeled short boots lets you maintain your overall silhouette while pulling together a feminine look. Adding a hat in an accent color also has the effect of drawing the eye upward. A down vest would also work nicely as an outer layer.

Caring for Jersey Tops

・Jersey tops made of 100% cotton or wool are less prone to pilling compared to long-piled sweaters or those made of synthetic fibers, but the insides of the sleeves and the sides of the body will inevitably develop some fuzz where repeated friction occurs. For this reason, we generally recommend brushing with a clothes brush, and carefully cutting away any pills that have grown large with small scissors.

・Please wash according to the care label instructions for each product.
