Do you like basket bags? At ZUTTO, basket bags are beloved from spring through summer, but natural-colored raffia and rattan basket bags can feel a little too early to bring out in this season, when mornings and evenings are still chilly. This time, we're featuring MUUN's black basket bags, which are easy to use across seasons—from early spring all the way through midsummer. Let's take a look at the secret behind how a basket bag can be so chic and practical.
MUUN's black basket bags are recommended for people like these.
Those who already own a favorite basket bag, but are bothered that it can only be used in a limited season
Those who love leather bags and canvas bags
Those who have avoided basket bags until now because they seemed too cute
When you think of a basket bag, you probably picture a natural-looking beige-to-brown color. The bag itself makes a strong impression, and just having one instantly adds seasonal flair, but sometimes it doesn't quite match the mood of the slightly chilly early spring or the tail end of summer. A black basket bag, on the other hand, comes together chicly in a single tone, with a more subdued sense of season. Some people even enjoy their basket bag year-round, letting a wool scarf peek out of it in winter.
Black basket bags for spring through summer. Let's go ahead and try them with some coordinates.
First, this basket bag. Large enough to hold plenty of belongings, it's the Tesage Basket 001.
【Spring: Paired with a light coat, worn like a tote bag】
Light coat: ZUTTO original. Coming soon
Skirt: Linen Swing Skirt DRESS GORDON
We paired the Tesage Basket 001 with a khaki light coat. Its generous size makes it easy to match with outfits that aren't too bright, and it's practical to carry when heading out.
【Summer: A great match for sandals and sleeveless tops】
Top: Reversible Short Sleeve (GRIS CHINE)
Scarf: [Special Order] Double Face Scarf (70×70) (PINK-BEIGE)
This also works well with a midsummer look of sandals and a short-sleeved top. Black bags can tend to look heavy, but a basket bag keeps things looking cool and breezy.
Next up is the small, adorable Katakake Basket 004, reused here. It also works as a shoulder bag.
【Spring: An accent for a sharp shirt dress look】
Shirt dress: Striped Shirt Dress
Leggings: [Special Order] Rib Collar Long Pants Logwood Navy (Leggings)
Pumps: Pointed Espadrille Pumps NV
A high-density, crisp shirt dress looks sharp on its own, but adding a basket bag gives it just the right touch of cuteness. With a shoulder strap that frees up both hands, it's just the right size for a stroll around the neighborhood.
【Summer: A perfect match for cool linen fabric】
Linen top and linen skirt: ZUTTO original. Coming early summer
Basket bags pair beautifully with linen fabrics in summer. Try adding a small basket bag to a relaxed linen set that you'd want to wear on vacation. In gray, black, or another monotone shade, it can easily join your everyday wardrobe too.
Even the smallest, the 004, could fit this much inside. The contents include a mini wallet (a long wallet would fit too, if the pouch is small), a pouch stuffed full to bursting, a paperback book, and small items like a camera and wax.
For those who'd prefer something a bit larger, the 002 is recommended. If you're bringing it along on a resort trip, this size should give you peace of mind.
MUUN, the brand featured here, began with an encounter with basket-weaving artisans in Nyariga, a small village in northern Ghana, Africa. Africa is known for being a favorable environment for tall aquatic plants such as palm leaves, hemp, reeds, and bamboo, and against this backdrop of abundant natural materials, people have long made baskets between periods of farming. Baskets made from natural materials in Africa are characterized by delicate weaving achieved through highly skilled patterned techniques, and this craftsmanship has been expressed not only in bags but also in hats, sandals, and accessories. In the small village of Nyariga, this traditional technique has been passed down through generations, and baskets have long been made from durable materials that feel good to the touch and hold up well over time.
At MUUN, technique, knowledge, sensibility, and culture are shared across borders to design traditional African hand-woven baskets in a way that keeps them useful for everyday life. The artisans of Nyariga could not initially read or write, yet they learned basket-weaving techniques through spoken language, and today they are among the most accomplished basket weavers, dedicating themselves to basket making. MUUN, meaning "smile" in the Ghanaian language, represents fine basket-making that bridges different countries, crafted through the hands of many people.
MUUN's basket bags are made by weaving a material called elephant grass. Elephant grass, which grows in the tropical regions of Africa, is said to reach heights of about 5 meters, and it is a supple yet extremely sturdy plant. In Southeast Asia, harvesting baskets and similar items woven from vine-like plants have long been produced, but in Africa, bags and accessories have traditionally been made by weaving tall plants like elephant grass. Making use of this long-standing African hand-weaving craftsmanship, these pieces are now created with highly fashionable designs.
ZUTTO carries four shapes. Please choose according to your preference and how you plan to use it.
There is something we'd like you to know before considering MUUN. Because these are handmade using natural materials, there is significant variation between individual pieces.
Variation in Shape
For example, due to the nature of the production method, there may be some slight twisting at the base.

Cut Ends
The basket bags are woven after cutting the raw material to the appropriate length. As a result, the cut ends may sometimes be visible on the surface, or small frayed bits from the material itself may be seen.

Even if such parts appear on the surface, there is little concern of the weave unraveling from them, but please take care during the initial period of use not to catch the bag on clothing, fabric, or accessories. Bags that come with an inner pouch or have fabric lining on the inside are designed to help prevent snagging. These cut ends and rough bits will gradually become smoother as you continue to use the bag.
Variation in Color
Because natural materials are used, there are areas where the color of the grass is not uniform. We recommend these bags to those who understand and appreciate that each one is a truly one-of-a-kind basket bag, unlike any other in the world.

The color of the grass varies widely—some pieces are bluish, some brownish, and others darker in tone. Precisely because these are gifts from African nature, they become all the more dear to us over time.
About Care
In addition to being made of natural materials, hand-woven bags have a few points worth keeping in mind.
For everyday care, we recommend simply "wiping" the bag. Gently wipe the surface with a soft cloth, almost as if polishing it. Basket bags with fine weaving tend to accumulate dirt inside the weave, so be sure to wipe those areas thoroughly. Choosing a brush made with natural animal hair can also help bring out more shine in the basket bag.

How to Store
Moisture is the greatest enemy of basket bags. Because they are made of natural materials, getting wet can lead to mold, insects, or loosening of the weave. For this reason, please avoid using the bag on rainy days or placing it in wet areas, and also take care with how you store it. When storing a basket bag, choose a well-ventilated spot out of direct sunlight. Since the bag can easily absorb moisture if left as is, we recommend covering it with a cloth, or if you have non-woven fabric on hand, wrapping the entire basket in it.
