The sunlight is gradually growing stronger this time of year. It's too warm for a jacket, yet full summer attire feels like getting a bit ahead of the season—this in-between period can be tricky. For this awkward stretch of the year, cut-and-sew tops are just the thing we'd recommend. An item that can adapt to shifting temperatures while also offering some protection from the sun is one you'll find useful for a long time.
Here we introduce three original ZUTTO cut-and-sew tops. We interviewed ZUTTO's brand manager about each one, all of which reflect careful attention to comfort. Having long worked as a stylist as well, our brand manager shares the characteristics of each top along with recommended styling ideas.

ZUTTO Brand Manager: I know exactly what you mean. This time of year, heading toward summer, the weather changes easily since it's also the rainy season, and you also start wondering whether your look matches the season. That's where cut-and-sew tops come in handy. Rather than short sleeves, three-quarter or long sleeves that you can wear breezily on their own are convenient for this time of year.
What ZUTTO aims for with its original wear is "everyday style that's easy to wear, without trying too hard."
The three cut-and-sew tops introduced here are designed so that simply throwing on a casual jersey piece creates a stylish look with just the right touch of modern flair. Fashion today keeps evolving—ageless, genderless, seasonless, sizeless. I think these are pieces that can help you build a style that keeps pace with these changing times.
This MVS Dotsume Top with Gusset is a cut-and-sew top you can reach for during this season of gradually rising temperatures, when you want to wear something easy on its own while still creating a certain mood.
At first glance it looks simple, but the body swells out right at the middle and then closes in toward the hem, forming a cocoon silhouette. This shape turns out to be surprisingly flattering regardless of height or build, making it easy to achieve good balance.
The back panel is cut longer than the front.
It really does sound like a piece of machinery, doesn't it (laughs). And in fact, that's exactly what it is—"MVS" is short for Murata Vortex Spinner, the name of a spinning machine. When yarn is spun using this machine, the fibers are twisted together into condensed layers, unlike with a typical spinning machine.
It's more like layers of thread overlapping one another. When the yarn is twisted, the shorter fibers are blown away by air, while the main fiber body spirals inward toward the center of the yarn, becoming wrapped by the other fibers. Because layers of fiber form this way, the inner layer becomes a structure where the fibers can't move around much, which results in a spun yarn with the least amount of fuzz.
That's right. Because it resists fuzzing, it has a smooth, crisp feel against the skin, which is ideal for the hotter months.
The MVS Dotsume Top with Gusset is finished in a fabric called "dotsume," made by weaving this yarn even more densely. As a result, the texture isn't so much soft as it is supple and durable. It resists losing its shape even with repeated wear and holds up well to washing. On top of that, it has the advantage of being less see-through even in pale colors.
The MVS Dotsume Top with Gusset comes with a new ZUTTO woven label.
Since the body is roomy, it pairs well with relatively fitted skirts or slim pants. But because the hem is closed in, it also looks great with wide-leg bottoms, as long as they have a shape that falls straight down.
On a slightly chilly day, I'd also recommend layering it over a tank top or short-sleeved shirt underneath. Thanks to the V-shaped gusset at the chest, it keeps the area around your face looking neat.
On the other hand, on days when the sun is strong or the temperature is high, the wide sleeves allow air to circulate, letting heat escape, which also gives it a sun-shielding effect.
A refreshing single layer that covers the parts you're mindful of.

The reason we made this cut-and-sew top was that we wanted to introduce a fabric with an exceptional texture and wearing comfort.
The yarn called Technorama was developed by Ono Meriyasu, a Tokyo-based maker that also handled production of this item. The raw cotton is Indian cotton, treated with bio-processing to make it softer, and thanks to a proprietary twisting technique, the fibers are twisted more tightly than usual. The resulting yarn has an extremely fine texture and excellent moisture absorption and quick-drying properties. It feels crisp and dry to the touch, with a beautiful sheen.

I suppose you could call it a "refined vintage feel" that sits between casual and luxurious, something that's hard to achieve with synthetic fibers. It's basic, yet the result of an uncompromising attention to the yarn itself.
The shape flares out at the hem, but drapes form from the chest, so even worn alone, it lets you enjoy an elegant, stylish look.
The beautiful drape, which seems to sway gently, is the key to the elegant impression.
The U-neck, which serves as an accent, opens just enough to reveal the collarbone. Compared to a high-necked T-shirt, it's more open, but piped seams keep it from looking sloppy and prevent it from stretching out over time. Combined with the drape, it creates an impression that's casual with a hint of modishness, without going all the way to conservative.
The U-neck shape gives a clean, elegant look to the neck.
Fabric made with Technorama yarn has a cool-to-the-touch quality, and thanks to its excellent moisture absorption and quick-drying properties, it doesn't cling to the skin even when you sweat. The three-quarter sleeves are also effective for sun protection and against air conditioning. On hot days, you can roll up the sleeves—when you do, the fabric falls into beautiful folds.
Pairing it with a compact bottom lets the drape of the cut-and-sew top stand out, or you could tuck the front hem slightly into loose pants like boyfriend denim for a stylish, well-balanced look.
A style that makes the most of the drape, giving off a relaxed sense of elegance.

It may look tricky to wear at first glance, but it's a cut-and-sew top that's comfortable and easy to style. It's designed without a fixed shoulder width, instead following the wearer's own shoulder line, so it suits a variety of body types. The reason it's surprisingly soft is that the material includes Tencel.
A fabric so soft to the touch, it's almost surprising.
It's a new material originally developed by a British manufacturer, a regenerated fiber made from wood pulp. Buried in soil, it breaks down and returns to the earth, and it's said to be "the fiber made using the most environmentally friendly (eco-friendly) manufacturing process in the world."
It's a material that's extremely soft, with a silk-like sheen, and boasts excellent moisture absorption and quick-drying properties. The Zip-Up Jersey Top combines this material with polyurethane and knits it in a jersey stitch, giving it a soft, airy fullness along with stretch.
It's hard to feel tired even after wearing it for long hours, it doesn't wrinkle easily, and it doesn't take up much space when packed, so it's also great for travel.
The finely knit fabric has stretch, wrapping the body in softness.
The zip placed at the front is designed to create an effect like a necklace. Since the teeth are fine, it doesn't stand out in a distracting way, and depending on how much you open the zip, you can change the impression—wearing it as a single cut-and-sew top, or opening it slightly to show a bit of an inner layer for a layered look.
And because the zip runs in a circle close to the face, it has the effect of making the area around the face look neat and clean.
A subtly shining zip that encircles the neck.
I think a basic outfit with muted colors is an easy place to start. If you choose bottoms with a straight-falling silhouette, everything comes together neatly. The top has a loose, relaxed cut that doesn't cling to the body's lines, but since the volume isn't too noticeable, you may not even need to tuck it into your waistband.
For the coming season, you could pair it with something light like a tank top underneath, and from autumn onward, layer it over a long-sleeve inner. We've also made a switch-panel jersey skirt in the same material and pattern, so we'd recommend pairing the two together and wearing them like a one-piece dress.

Bag: Akebi basket (dobari-hora weave, guni handle)

Any of these cut-and-sew tops will look put-together simply by pairing them with your everyday bottoms. We make them in a free size so that they fit each person who wears them. It's the kind of versatile item you'll want to reach for whenever you're unsure what to wear—one that's well worth having in your wardrobe.
