A warm wool sweater is the essence of winter style. This year, of course, we've added lovely sweaters to our own wardrobes too, but since sweaters require special care, they can feel like a bit much for days spent just around the house. For such days, having a cut-and-sew piece that keeps you just as warm as a sweater—without the worry of upkeep or pilling—lets you enjoy dressing up without any fuss. Now that we're spending more time at home, it's especially nice to be able to choose your go-to fashion piece based on what the day holds.
With the recent trend of mild winters, demand for non-wool materials has been rising even in autumn and winter, and fabric development continues to evolve every year. Cut-and-sew items are no longer just "loungewear jersey"—they've taken center stage as genuine fashion pieces. They've become a main item you can wear not just around the house or the neighborhood, but out and about too.
This year, with more time spent at home than ever, we especially want to recommend cut-and-sew pieces that keep you warm in place of a sweater, letting you enjoy fashion with no fuss involved. With that in mind, we're bringing you a three-part series of products, divided by season according to the temperature.
Part 1: the TOP Heather Brushed Fleece-Lined Dolman Parka.
This is a variation on the parka that first came out in early 2020, with slight changes to the zipper color and sleeve length. The outer fabric has a rich, heathered look made by blending in ochiwata (recovered cotton fiber), while the inside is a brushed fleece lining with a soft, plush feel against the skin.
Since this piece is worn as an outer layer, we paid special attention to achieving a rich, heathered fabric appearance. It uses a raffia-style yarn blended with extra-long staple ochiwata. The result is a pleasant feel against the skin along with a natural, vintage-like unevenness that comes from the irregular texture of the yarn.
Extra-long staple cotton is an exceptionally long fiber harvested from the cotton plant. With a fiber length exceeding 35mm, it's supple, lustrous, highly absorbent, and pleasantly plump. Because it contains more natural oils, it also feels especially soft against the skin. Ochiwata refers to raw cotton fiber that falls away as waste during the spinning process, never making it into yarn.
It's an eco-friendly material made using recycled cotton.
To make the most of these material qualities, the fabric is knit loosely on a sinker knitting machine so as not to compromise the character of the yarn, resulting in a soft, three-dimensional knit.
Using a raffia-style yarn with a distinctive sheen and uneven texture, we deliberately chose a slightly thinner yarn than what the machine—built for thicker yarns—typically handles. This, along with other adjustments, achieves a soft, airy texture reminiscent of suspended fleece lining.
The fabric is further processed with ultra-fine brushing on the inside, bringing out fine napped fibers on the reverse side. After brushing, the fabric is washed, giving it a sheepskin-like touch and warmth you can really feel.
With its plump fabric, the dimensional shape of the double-layered hood, and dolman sleeves, the TOP Heather Brushed Fleece-Lined Dolman Parka creates atmosphere the moment you slip it on.
Despite being dolman sleeves, the roominess is concentrated around the shoulders, while the sleeves themselves stay slim. The hood adds volume up high, drawing the eye upward for a well-balanced silhouette. With a double zip (opening from both top and bottom), you can also style it in different ways.
Since it's a casual, boyish item that could easily double as loungewear, pairing it with a skirt, wide-leg pants that resemble a skirt, or feminine accessories helps strike a nice balance. On the other hand, if the cut-and-sew top itself has some lady-like details, try pairing it with denim or mannish-style pants for the bottom instead. With pieces like this, it's especially worth applying the golden rule of styling: mixing sweet and edgy elements.
With Japan's recent mild winters, there are days when this parka alone is enough to wear outside. If you let the hood peek out from your coat, its dimensional shape means you can even skip the scarf.
Since the outer side isn't brushed, it also works as an outer layer come spring—wearable right up until early summer heat sets in. Worn over a short-sleeve top or tank top, you'll notice just how comfortable it feels against the skin.

At the ZUTTO atelier in Hyogo Prefecture, the patterns that form the basis of each item are created.
It's the pattern maker's role to bring together the design vision from ZUTTO's designers with the unique character and qualities of the fabric being used, applying all sorts of ingenuity along the way.

Sometimes the fabric is changed to realize a particular design vision, or the design itself is adjusted to make the most of the material—and in the process of shaping the piece, new appeal can emerge along the way.

Based on the pattern made here, a sample is produced by the craftsperson, and after further adjustments are considered, the craftsperson finishes it into the final product. It's truly through a long, long process that a single piece of clothing is completed.

ZUTTO's original wear, created in pursuit of "a design you'll always love" and "clothes you can grow attached to" that make you want to wear them every day, is now entering its fifth season. It's only because we have this atelier for making things that we're able to use good materials, incorporate the functionality we're looking for, and give it all form. We'll continue to share with everyone the wear born from this place.
From here, let us give you a little preview of the second and third installment products that will be appearing a bit later, currently in preparation.

The second installment: brushed pile-lined pullover
【Scheduled for release in January】A thick pullover that can be worn in place of a sweater. Perfect for wearing under a coat during the coldest time of the year. It resists picking up fibers from coats or stoles, so you can wear it without any stress. It has a body width that's relaxed without being too large, sleeve width that's easy to layer under a coat, and a length that's neither too short nor too long, pairing well with both skirts and pants. It's a shape that's easy to recommend to anyone.
During the still-cold season, isn't it true that only our fashion sensibilities have started heading toward spring ahead of time? Every year around that time, we find ourselves at a loss for what to wear... we're preparing something that can answer that feeling.

The third installment: cardboard-knit pullover
【Scheduled for release in February】This is an item you'll want to wear during that season when the air gradually starts to feel a bit more like spring. It's made from "cardboard knit," a lightweight, easy-to-handle material that's becoming one of our standard fabrics.
While it has the light, springlike appearance, it uses a fabric with warmth retention, suitable for that still chilly time of year. It's thinner than the cardboard knit that previously appeared in ZUTTO originals, and is characterized by its elegant sheen.
Cut-and-sew items tend to have a casual image, but this one incorporates lady-like details.
Items delivered through ZUTTO's atelier. We'll continue to introduce them to you as they become available.
