Leather sandals you repair and keep wearing, duckfeet. A charm that sometimes fits right in with the trends.

As we begin to feel the summer sun more often, it's a season when the urge to head out with summer accessories starts to bubble up.

One item that comes to mind when you think "summer" is sandals. From affordable options to those prioritizing ease of walking, sandals come in a wide range—but what comes to mind when you think of sandals that let a grown-up look elegant while feeling relaxed?

What I'd like to recommend is leather sandals. Cool leather sandals that reveal just the right amount of bare skin don't just give you a simple polished look—they bring out a healthy vitality and grown-up charm, resulting in beautifully finished feet. And of course, the fact that they aren't disposable but can be cherished for years to come is not to be overlooked.

When it comes to leather sandals, this time we'd like to once again share the appeal of duckfeet sandals, a long-selling item that ZUTTO has carried for over 10 years.

The Charm of duckfeet

Simple design, endless ways to style

duckfeet sandals are simple and classic, the kind you can keep wearing for years to come. Being a classic also means they're easy to blend with current trends. For example, while wearing them barefoot is the standard approach, styling them with socks is also gaining attention.

Since sandals leave the toes exposed, you might especially want to take precautions in rooms with strong air conditioning. But wearing them with socks helps guard against the cold, and lets you enjoy your sandals for a longer stretch of the season.

duckfeet sandals, of course, are sandals you can enjoy pairing with socks as well.

Pairing sandals with socks is a styling approach recommended from around May and June, as the weather starts to warm up, all the way through early autumn. Since duckfeet has such a simple design, it pairs well with everything from patterned socks to brightly colored ones.

In the height of summer, wear them barefoot to stay cool. Since the leather is quite sturdy, it may feel a bit stiff at first, but as duckfeet sandals are worn over the years and mold to your feet, regular care and repair will gradually give them a deep, rich character.

▲Leather Strap Sandal Bornholm Choco

The strap on duckfeet's Bornholm series has a slightly unique construction, with an original structure that lets you freely adjust its length. A single leather strap runs from the toe along the inside of the sole and continues up to just below the ankle. This creates a fit as if the strap were wound snugly around your foot, resulting in a sandal that feels like it hugs your foot closely.

The sole is made from a natural crepe rubber. Soft and highly cushioned, it's a sandal you'll want to wear out even on days full of walking.

Long-lasting, so it becomes your own summer staple

Leather is a material that softens and molds to you the more you wear it. With leather shoes, taking them to a specialist shop each time for care, having the soles repaired, and counting the years you've worn them all becomes part of the appeal—but with leather sandals, you might not have much of an image of them being repaired.

I once lived in Okinawa, and back then I wore island-style beach sandals called shima-zōri almost year-round. Being inexpensive, they were easy to wear casually, and I replaced them many times over the course of a few years—that accessibility was part of their appeal. But precisely because they come in so many designs and materials and are so easy to get your hands on, the image of a short lifespan tends to cling to them.

So what about leather sandals, then? They're by no means an inexpensive purchase, but what if that cost meant you could wear them for years, having them repaired along the way so you could keep loving them indefinitely? If you think of them as something for just one year, they seem pricey—but if you can keep wearing them forever, that changes things.

duckfeet sandals overturn that kind of image—they are leather sandals whose strength lies in being repaired and worn for years.

▲Each pair of shoes comes with a "Care and Repair" pamphlet.

At the end of this article, we also introduce a pair of duckfeet shoes that have been cherished for 10 years—duckfeet leather is remarkably tough. Knowing that a pair of sandals can be worn for over 10 years makes it all the more exciting to start using them. Reducing how often you need to replace them is also a form of being eco-friendly. Made from natural materials dyed with plant-based tanning agents, these are sandals that are kind to both your wallet and the planet.

Repairable, so you can wear them with continued affection

duckfeet is a brand that values "repairing items to use them for a long time." As the outsole is especially prone to wear, everything from a full sole replacement to a heel-only replacement is possible—a thoughtful touch that leaves nothing overlooked.

The more you walk, the more the leather molds to your feet—but the sole is bound to wear down. This has always been the challenge of wearing leather sandals for years on end.

At duckfeet, sandals are made to carry the marks of each wearer's daily life and every step taken, developing a one-of-a-kind character over time. With the hope that people can spend their summers in soft, comfortable footwear, duckfeet offers a range of sandal repair services.

▲Even a worn-down sole can be replaced, letting you continue wearing your sandals beautifully for years to come.

Examples of the main sandal repair services
・Lift (heel section) replacement
・Full sole replacement
・Stitch repair, and more
*Depending on the condition, repairs may not be possible in some cases. Please first consult ZUTTO Customer Support.

The comfortable fit that develops through repair is thanks to the natural leather, tanned with plant-based tanning agents rather than chemical or artificial additives. These are extracted from tree barks such as acacia and quebracho, giving each piece its own individual color and character.

Occasional care deepens your attachment

duckfeet recommends basic care once a month. If you'd like to keep wearing your shoes beautifully for a long time, please give it a try.

 1. Brush off dust and dirt from the shoes.
This easily removes dust and dirt that has built up on the shoes. Use a brush made specifically for shoes and brush gently. It's especially important to carefully check the stitched areas, since dirt tends to accumulate there.

When the shoes are particularly dirty, remove surface grime beforehand using a leather lotion or similar product.

 2. Replenish nutrients and moisturize.
Once brushing has removed the dirt, apply a small amount of care cream to a sponge or soft cloth and work it into the leather. This replenishes nutrients in the leather and keeps it moisturized.

 3. Store in a place away from direct sunlight and moisture.
Because these are natural materials, mold can develop in humid environments. Checking on your shoes from time to time and giving them proper care helps prevent this and keeps them looking beautiful for longer.

Leather also absorbs moisture from your feet, almost as if it were breathing. It's said that after wearing a pair of shoes for a day, resting them for a day to let the moisture escape is key to keeping them in good condition over the long term. For more detailed care instructions, please refer to the leaflet included with the shoes.

Getting to know the aging process

duckfeet's leather is something you can enjoy watching change over time. The more you wear it, the deeper the color becomes, and the more you'll notice its subtle sheen.

◆Bonus feature

These boots aren't currently sold at ZUTTO, but a distributor showed us a pair of duckfeet boots they'd worn with love for 10 years, and we'd like to introduce them here. The soles have been replaced along the way, keeping the boots looking beautiful, and apparently the owner even walked the old Tokaido road from Shizuoka all the way to Nihonbashi in these very shoes. It really speaks to just how easy duckfeet are to walk in.

・Worn with love for 10 years
・Outsole replaced twice
・Made of the same material as the "ROSKILDE side-gore boots"

(*The surface finish differs slightly—the ROSKILDE has been given a light brushed finish.)

Q: What kind of care did you give them?

A: My care routine involves thoroughly removing surface dirt (brushing) and moisturizing the leather (applying a generous amount of lotion). This lets me enjoy the aging process while preserving the leather's natural character.

On top of that, I apply a naturally derived oil-based care cream once every one to two months, which brings out even more character and texture as the leather ages—I really enjoy that part too. I don't try too hard to keep them looking pristine; it's more of a relaxing little ritual whenever I feel like it.

Q: What do you like most about the fit and feel of duckfeet?

A: It feels like I'm using all five toes to grip the ground with my whole body as I walk.

It's a bit hard to put into words since it's such a sensory thing. But if I had to describe it, I'd say that when you really pay attention to the act of "walking"—from the moment your foot touches the ground to when you push off—the shoe supports your entire body weight while your sole makes proper contact with the ground, letting you walk in a truly grounded way.

This kind of fit comes from the shoes being properly equipped to function as a tool for walking, and from the materials used—natural material (single-piece leather) combined with a crepe sole.

 ***

This kind of comfort isn't limited to boots—it carries over to the sandals as well. duckfeet sandals aren't just simple and built to last visually; they're also equipped with real walking function. Leather sandals that you wear while having them repaired along the way gradually transform into something that fits only you, which may be exactly why they feel even easier to walk in. We hope you'll make them your own go-to pair, perhaps trying out some trendy styles along the way too, and enjoy wearing them for years to come.
