I think many people have large, deep plates such as rice bowls, but you don't often see shallow bowls made for ramen. When you hear the word ``ramen bowl,'' you may imagine a lively plate with a colorful pattern, but the bowl we introduce is a luxurious plate with a lacquer finish. The beautiful luster that is unique to lacquer is indescribably cool, and of course it's also great for serving not only ramen, but also as a plate with soups and other dishes to give it a special touch.

Make an ordinary day special

The great thing about wooden bowls is that they don't get hot even when you put freshly prepared food in them. Noodle dishes you eat at home will instantly look more luxurious, so they are also recommended as gifts. When giving tableware as a gift, you often wonder if you already have it if it's a common shape, but a ramen bowl can be a surprise, making it a gift that will be appreciated.

A lacquer bowl is made of zelkova wood and is coated with lacquer. Urushi is the sap that comes out when a wound is made in a lacquer tree, and its appeal is that the more it is used, the more its flavor develops. Because it is a natural material, each piece has its own individuality, just like people, and no two are exactly the same. Therefore, even if the same process is performed, the amount of time and effort required will vary depending on the item, but there is no difference in the high degree of perfection, and there is no difference in the fact that the items are made with great care and attention.

The process of making a bowl is the same regardless of the method of painting, including ``purchasing materials at the market > carving into the ideal shape > soaking in plenty of lacquer to fill in the wood conduits (kijigatame).'' Shin-nuri then involves applying lacquer to the polished base wood, and then repeating the process of polishing and applying lacquer over the top to increase its strength; there are approximately 16 steps in total. Even a single bowl is carefully and carefully crafted by many craftsmen: a fabric craftsman who shaves the fabric, a base coater who applies layers of lacquer, a top coater who applies the finishing lacquer, and a maki-e craftsman who applies maki-e. It's being done.

Redefining the value of things

Rokurosha is a wood products workshop founded by Yoshio Sakai, a round woodturner, in Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture. Mr. Sakai, who was born in Hokkaido, moved to Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture when he joined a wood products manufacturer. There, he studied under Reiji Yamaguchi, a woodturner and traditional craftsman, and learned the skills of a woodturner. After leaving the company, he honed his skills under Mr. Masayoshi Shimizu, a traditional craftsman of Echizen lacquerware, and in 2014 launched Rokurosha, a wood production workshop. Our concept is to "redefine value" by inheriting the skills of a traditional round wood craftsman and producing products without being particular about materials or manufacturing methods, with a focus on wood.
