The story of Charentaise

RONDINAUD Charentaise (indoor shoes from the Charente region) was born by chance and the awareness of craftsmen.
In the late 17th century, the Charentes region of France produced navy peacoats made from durable felt fabric. At paper mills, paper was placed on top of felt scraps, pressed, and dried. The water-absorbing felt was pressurized many times to absorb the moisture from the paper stock, making it impervious to water, and local shoe stores and shoe repair shops collected this felt to use as supple and comfortable shoe soles. I got an idea. At that time, they were used like strong socks to be placed inside sabots, and they were devised to prevent the insteps of the wooden shoes from coming into direct contact with the feet, and the Charentaise was born by using sturdy felt on the bottom. Charentaise was called ``silent footwear'' because the peasants who wore it could walk silently inside their master's room.
