History of Kyo Chijimi

The history of Kyo Chijimi is very old, and during the Momoyama period, Ming (China) weavers created a hemp-based hemp-based chijimi. Silk crepe and cotton chijimi were introduced to Japan. They are very light, thin, and stretchy natural fibers that are ideal for the hot, humid Japanese summers, and have the functions of sweat absorption, quick drying, and coolness. During the Edo period, they were popular mainly in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, but at the time, they were a luxury item with very little production and were rarely available to the general public. However, mass production became possible with technological innovation during the postwar high economic growth, and they became popular. Also, at the time, there was a bleaching factory in Kyoto called Fushimi bleaching, so they were manufactured in Kyoto and became known as Kyoto chijimi.
