The brand Matador was started in 2014 in Boulder, Colorado, USA. The brand started when founder Chris Clearman saw people sitting in a park in San Francisco with their jackets and thick blankets on the grass, damp from the morning dew. Realizing that a compact, packable rug that could be taken anywhere would make it easier to relax, he began making blankets in his garage. He completed a waterproof blanket that could fit in a pocket.

Later, he applied his experience as a product designer to material selection and gimmicks to create his favorite travel and outdoor items, and Matador has grown into a brand of ultra-lightweight travel gear. Chris' experience in travel has made him realize the importance of reliable travel gear, and he is always committed to designing products that will last, with an emphasis on long-lasting durability and testing in the mountains, rivers, and other natural environments of Boulder.
