Carefully Selected Materials
At JOHN SMEDLEY, we use Sea Island cotton, which we judge to be the best quality for that season. Sea Island cotton is cotton that was originally grown on islands off the coast of Georgia in the United States. It then traveled from the United States to various parts of the world, including the West Indies, and is highly regarded for its quality.
Sea Island cotton requires the right climate, soil, and precise agricultural techniques, and it is said that it can only grow in land with all these conditions. Its high quality is such that there was a custom of encouraging the use of Sea Island cotton in the British royal family. Elizabeth I used Sea Island cotton for sheets and negligees, and since then it has been known as a status symbol for the British aristocracy and gentlemen.
The French sleeve cotton knit pullover S4415 is knitted with Sea Island cotton. It has a smooth texture and is so comfortable that you will forget that the fine fabric is knit.
Inherited traditions and techniques
JOHN SMEDLEY was founded in 1784 in Derbyshire, England by Peter Nightingale and John Smedley. When the company was first established, it started with spinning cotton and making fabric, and by the end of the 18th century, it had begun to manufacture woolen fabrics and socks. In 1819, John Smedley's son, John II, took over from his predecessor at the young age of 24 and set a policy of carrying out all processes from spinning to knitting and sewing in-house. This policy was the driving force behind JOHN SMEDLEY's rise from a small spinning factory to a known knitwear manufacturer. In addition, the fourth generation introduced the most advanced spinning and knitting machines of the time and began manufacturing fine gauge knitwear.
