A craftsman's journey of over half a century

One of the techniques that Zoho Kiln specializes in is vermilion crackling. Known as Zoho red, it's made using the precious red ochre.
The red ochre that graces the pottery is a paint that takes three years to complete, requiring slow, careful rubbing over a period of 1,000 days. After firing, it achieves a smooth, deep red color. It's said that the more time it's rubbed, the more beautiful the red becomes, and since the early Showa period, it has been considered a precious gem and has been referred to as the "mysterious red ochre."

When we think of red in pottery, we imagine a reddish-brown color, but Zoho's red is a vibrant, bright crimson. The vermilion-wrapped treasure-decorated matcha bowl is an auspicious bowl, with gold adorning it with cranes and jewels (a jewel that grants any wish, grants treasure as desired, and removes evil), a treasure scroll (a scroll containing sacred sutras), and a weight (a symbol of wealth) that complement its color.

Zouho Kiln opened in 1970. After training under a Living National Treasure, the company has since won top awards for ceramic design and has been commissioned by art museums to create replicas of Important Cultural Properties, garnering attention for its sophisticated taste and craftsmanship. Since then, the company has continued to produce reliable and consistent products, having been designated an official kiln by the Gifu Prefecture Shrine Association.
