From Yamagata, the home of knitwear

Yamanobe Town in Yamagata Prefecture developed its textile industry thanks to its history of sericulture among farming households and the government’s encouragement of sheep raising as a side business, with families spinning yarn at home to support their livelihood. At one time, many knitwear manufacturers existed there, but as overseas production grew, the number of factories declined. Amid such changes, Yonetomi Seni Co., Ltd., founded in 1952, continued to refine advanced knit textile development techniques while producing sweaters.

From material development to product creation and mass production, everything is carried out consistently at their factory in Yamanobe. Whenever they hear of a new material, they are quick to incorporate it, energetically working on innovative products. Driven by the desire to create excellent goods in an enjoyable and positive environment, they even introduced the first knitting computer, and to this day they continue developing a wide variety of textiles. With a total of 43 fully automatic flat knitting machines, they boast Japan’s largest and one of the world’s leading production systems specializing in low-gauge knits.

The founder, determined to overturn the common belief that “knitwear cannot be worn in summer,” spent two years experimenting and eventually created a method for making summer sweaters, which he then boldly shared within the local industry. This breakthrough transformed the Meriyasu industry, which until then operated only half the year for autumn and winter sweaters, into a year-round business. Even today, the company continues to seek new means of expression without resting on its history and traditions.

It is this background that gave birth to YONETOMI NEW BASIC, a knitwear project that uses the company’s accumulated technical expertise to pursue timeless essentials. Aiming to “knit individuality out of the ordinary,” they create everyday basics with thoughtful details and subtle design touches made possible precisely because they are a factory brand—knits that seamlessly accompany the “new everyday.”
