This zodiac sake cup features a blue-and-white depiction of a horse standing gallantly, its mane swaying in the breeze. Featuring the horse, the zodiac sign for 2026, this sake cup is perfect for cheerfully celebrating the start of a new year.
The technique of "fukisumi," in which blue and white is applied by spraying it onto the base, originates from ancient blue and white porcelain from the Ming Dynasty in China. The soft expression created by the misty shades of blue is a delicate handiwork unique to Kamide Choemon Kiln.
The easy-to-handle, small size fits comfortably in the hand and blends naturally into everyday dining. Perfect for savoring a little sake after dinner or sharing a cup of sake at a celebratory occasion. The refreshing blue color also enhances the food when used to serve small sweets or appetizers.
These sake cups inspired by the zodiac also make recommended New Year gifts. They are perfect for welcoming the start of the new year and bringing a sense of tranquility.
Tradition in the Modern Age
Kamide Choemon Kiln was founded in 1879 in Terai Village, Nomi District, Ishikawa Prefecture (now Terai Town, Nomi City, Ishikawa Prefecture). With over 135 years of history, this long-established Kutani ware kiln boasts an integrated production system, from porcelain molding to painting. Their handmade, hand-painted products are known for their vibrant overglaze paintings, deep dyeing, and, above all, their durable, beautiful fabric. In recent years, this long-established, six-generation kiln has embarked on a new initiative, crafting Kutani ware that is adapted to the modern era. As a kiln that has maintained its tradition since its founding in 1879, these products retain the traditional craftsmanship of Kutani ware while incorporating colors, shapes, and hand-painted designs that are suited to modern lifestyles, resulting in a truly endearing product.
Kutani Ware, Representative of Japan
Like other pottery, Kutani ware began as a craft that was hand-shaped and painted.
During the Edo period, the Maeda clan, lords of the Kaga domain, discovered pottery stone and began producing porcelain. They later learned ceramic techniques in Arita, Bizen, and expanded the scope of this traditional Japanese craft to include tea utensils and other items. Its distinctive features, featuring a clear white base and various patterns, make it both easy to use and pleasing to the eye. The appeal lies in the colorful designs that stand out against the hard, glassy white of the porcelain.
Kamide Choemon Kiln, a kiln that has primarily produced and sold fine arts and crafts, Japanese restaurant tableware, and everyday tableware, continues to uphold the traditions of Kutani ware.
Because it is hand-painted, no two pieces are alike. The variations in the designs depending on the artisan and the time of production add to the value of each piece.
Kamide Choemon Kiln insists on hand-painting because they believe that there is great potential in the human hand. People are overwhelmed by the warmth, familiarity, and flavor of handmade items, as well as the skill and precision involved. With the belief that "whatever the era, the things created by people have the great power to move people's hearts," Kamide Choemon Kiln continues to carefully create and preserve hand-painted pottery.
