The bowls we use most often in daily meals are those whose practicality translates directly into frequent use. Higashiya's Donburi Bowl Kaoru No.2 is compact yet substantial enough to hold a full serving of noodles or rice. Its softly curved silhouette fits comfortably in the hand, while the slight curve of the rim creates a pleasant mouthfeel for soups and broths. Production had been suspended for a time due to manufacturing challenges, but after revising the production method, this beloved bowl has returned to the table.
The lightness of porcelain and the warmth of handcrafted work
A generous base, accented by a sleek blue line. The Donburi Bowl Kaoru No.2 possesses a presence that feels familiar yet uniquely its own. At first glance, its size may seem modest, but its straight sides and wide base create a design that holds more than meets the eye. It neatly holds a single serving of rice dishes like oyakodon, tempura rice bowls, or beef bowls, as well as noodles like udon, soba, or ramen. It handles generous toppings with ease. The porcelain's characteristic thinness and lightness reduce the burden of daily chores, making it a vessel whose ease of handling is felt every time you pick it up.
Produced by Kōshun Kiln in Hasami Town, Nagasaki Prefecture, this piece comes from a kiln with over 400 years of regional craftsmanship. They specialize in glaze formulation and hand-turning techniques. Unlike mass production, the handmade process sometimes leaves faint horizontal lines on the surface—natural traces of the hand-turning. This slight, imperfect character adds a gentle touch to your table. The name "Kaoru" on the bowl comes from the designer, Kaoru Watanabe. The character for "Jyu" (Longevity) is stamped in red, making this bowl perfect for festive occasions like New Year's celebrations. It also makes a thoughtful gift for weddings and other celebrations.
