Knitted Differently for Each Area

The fabric is a blend of merino wool, nylon, and polyurethane. It is highly resistant to wear and offers just the right amount of stretch. The leg and bottom sections feature a terry lining that absorbs shock while reducing strain during walks. Meanwhile, the instep is made from a thinner fabric to ensure breathability. Additionally, the foot section is designed for a secure fit that prevents the socks from shifting inside your shoes. Merino wool has properties that inhibit the growth of odor-causing bacteria, making it less likely for odors to develop even after long hours of wear. With moderate insulation, these socks are suitable for year-round use, from summer high-altitude hikes to winter outings.

For someone like me who tends to have cold feet, they have become an essential indoor sock during the chilly seasons. The Beginning: A Meeting with Merino Wool

Founded in 1994, icebreaker began when founder JEREMY MOON met a merino sheep farmer through a friend. JEREMY MOON had been kayaking for years and was frustrated with the breathability and unique odors of outdoor clothing at the time. Outdoor apparel was dominated by synthetic fibers, and few people were interested in merino wool. However, the 100% merino wool t-shirt he received from the farmer was lightweight, soft to the touch, breathable, and resistant to odors. Learning about the characteristics of merino wool inspired him to create stress-free clothing for various sports. He left his job, secured a loan from the bank, and used his savings to produce five items, including four types of tops and one type of leggings, to launch his brand.

The raw materials for icebreaker come from the fleece of merino sheep raised in the Southern Alps of New Zealand at an altitude of 1,800 meters. These merino sheep live in harsh high-altitude conditions with significant temperature fluctuations. In the summer, when temperatures can reach 35 degrees Celsius, the fine wool provides excellent breathability to regulate the sheep's body temperature, while in winter, the thick wool layer protects them from the cold, even down to minus 20 degrees. This high functionality of merino wool is a product of nature, created not from the latest technical fibers or petroleum, but from grass, water, and sunlight. Its biodegradability and renewability contribute to sustainable manufacturing practices.
