Connecting Traditional Japanese Techniques to the Present
Developed from the traditional craft of "Takashima Chijimi," which has been passed down since the Edo period in Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture, BIWACOTTON is a fabric designed to provide comfort during Japan's hot and humid summers. Chijimi is a traditional cooling material created to help people endure the summer heat, and it became widely loved as it spread across the country thanks to Takashima merchants. BIWACOTTON has evolved from this chijimi technique to suit modern clothing.
The difference between BIWACOTTON and Takashima Chijimi lies in the twisting of the yarn. While Takashima Chijimi uses yarn that is twisted more tightly than usual, BIWACOTTON is twisted even closer to its limit, resulting in a drier feel against the skin. This tightly twisted yarn is then woven using an air-jet loom, which is no easy task. Due to the strong twisting, it’s not uncommon for the fabric to shrink during the weaving process. However, when you see the beautiful appearance and elasticity of this fabric, you can tell that it has been carefully crafted through multiple attempts, making you want to cherish it.
Furthermore, the characteristics of BIWACOTTON, which has undergone various innovations during its manufacturing process, can be explained in three main features.
◇ Feature 1: Genuine 100% Cotton
No synthetic fibers or any materials other than cotton are used. Despite this, BIWACOTTON offers excellent stretch and a unique texture reminiscent of high-quality linen.
◇ Feature 2: Comfortable Coolness
The fabric is woven with gaps between the yarns, allowing for excellent breathability. It also has quick-drying properties, combined with the superior moisture absorption of cotton, making it less sticky even when sweating. Additionally, the wrinkled texture helps prevent the fabric from clinging to the skin, ensuring comfort during the hot summer months.
◇ Feature 3: Excellent Stretch
After weaving the carefully twisted yarn, it is passed through hot water to shrink it, resulting in a more stretchable fabric. This ensures that there is no stress while wearing, allowing for a light and comfortable feel that lasts.
Dry, Light, and Comfortable
BIWACOTTON has evolved the functionality of traditional "suteteko" material into modern clothing. Made in Shiga, a region rich in water resources with Lake Biwa, BIWACOTTON is a fabric that has been updated for contemporary use while maintaining the comfort of the 200-year-old "Takashima Chijimi." This historically significant fabric adapts to the changing times, discerning the forms necessary for daily life while looking towards a future of technical inheritance and delivering comfort to people.

Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture, where Lake Biwa is located and has abundant water resources, is active in the production of cotton fabrics. BIWACOTTON maker Sugioka Orifu Co., Ltd. is located in the area where industrial materials, canvas, pajamas, suteteko and other underwear, and thin cotton fabric materials such as those used for yukata are also made.
Sugioka Orifu, which buys cotton yarn from a trading company, weaves "Takashima Chijimi", which has a history of more than 200 years, and sells the finished products. He has been producing pajamas and suteteko fabrics for many years, but at one point he felt that the clothes he wore changed with the passage of time, so he decided to make the fabrics so that he could wear them not only at home but also outside. And in 2017, we developed "Loquat Cotton", a comfortable fabric with excellent stretchability while retaining the crispness unique to Chijimi.
It is a manufacturer that not only protects the technique of Chijimi Takashima, which has continued since the Edo period, but also continues to challenge new technologies.
