As easy to care for as cotton, yet wonderfully warm

At the core of this T-shirt is the plating jersey knitting technique. While traditional jersey knitting typically uses a single type of yarn, plating involves simultaneously feeding two different yarns into the knitting machine for the front and back, creating a single piece of fabric. The front features Australian Merino wool with a diameter of 19.5 microns, while the back is made of cotton. Unlike fabrics that are woven separately and then bonded, this piece is crafted as a single fabric from the knitting stage.

The fine yarn results in a dense knit, giving it a high-gauge knit appearance. It’s lightweight and can be worn in all seasons except summer. Additionally, since only the side that touches the skin is made of cotton, it’s comfortable for those who are sensitive to the prickly feel of wool.

One of the great features of this T-shirt is that it can be washed in a household washing machine. Many wool-blend knits require hand washing or dry cleaning, making them less practical for frequent wear. However, this piece is designed to be treated just like your usual cotton T-shirts, allowing for easy care.

From the knitting production area of Yamagata

Yamanobe Town in Yamagata Prefecture has developed its textile industry due to many farmers raising silkworms and the government encouraging sheep farming as a side business in rural areas, allowing families to make a living by spinning yarn. At one point, there were numerous knit manufacturers, but as production shifted overseas, the number of factories declined. Amidst this, Yonetomi Textile Co., Ltd., founded in 1952, has continued to knit while honing advanced knit textile development techniques.

From material development to product creation and mass production, everything is carried out consistently at their own factory in Yamanobe Town. They actively incorporate new materials as they become available and strive to create new products, aiming to produce quality items in a good environment. They introduced the first knitting computer and have been developing various textiles daily. With 43 fully automatic flat knitting machines, they boast one of the best low-gauge production systems in Japan and the world.

The founder, after two years of trial and error to overturn the common belief that "knits cannot be worn in summer," publicly shared the method for creating summer sweaters within the production area. This innovation transformed the knitwear industry, which was previously limited to autumn and winter, allowing for year-round operations. Today, they continue to seek new expressions without resting on their history and tradition. Utilizing the development techniques accumulated over many years, the knit project YONETOMI NEW BASIC aims to pursue basics that resonate with "new everyday life," incorporating thoughtful details and subtle arrangements that are possible only from a factory perspective, all while striving to weave individuality out of the ordinary.
