A wall clock that you glance at multiple times a day. Typically, you look at it just to check the time and quickly divert your gaze, but this clock makes you want to linger a little longer even after you've confirmed the hour. Celebrating the 70th anniversary of Arne Jacobsen's masterpiece wall clock, CITY HALL, we present the "Botany." This special wall clock features a dial color inspired by the plant textiles Jacobsen created in the 1940s.

An Architect on His Knees to Capture Plants

Even if the name Jacobsen doesn't ring a bell, many of you may have seen chairs he designed. The "Egg Chair," which envelops the body like an eggshell, and the "Seven Chair," with its smoothly curved thin seat made from a single piece of molded plywood, are both creations of Arne Jacobsen. He was a prominent architect and designer representing 20th-century Denmark.

One of his architectural works is the Roskilde City Hall, located near Copenhagen. The clock "CITY HALL" was designed in 1956 when Jacobsen was tasked with the project of this city hall, where he designed everything from the building itself to the furniture, typography, and clocks. The absence of numbers on the dial aligns with the rational and minimalist design of the city hall. Originally a clock for the building, it later expanded into homes and became a staple in Denmark.

On the other hand, the color of the BOTANY dial was conceived over a decade earlier by Jacobsen. The textiles released in 1943 and 1944 were inspired by his observations of plants. Jacobsen had a keen interest in botany, often venturing into gardens and the outdoors with a camera and paintbrush to document colors, textures, leaf shapes, and patterns. There are even photographs of him kneeling on the ground to capture plants up close. The "color" of Jacobsen in the plant-obsessed 1940s and the "form" of Jacobsen in 1956 when he designed the city hall come together in the ARNE JACOBSEN Wall Clock CITY HALL BOTANY.

Two Dial Colors and Their Corresponding Hands

The BOTANY comes in two colors: Green "Pennycress GR" and Blue-Gray "Bryner BL."

Pennycress GR is based on the 1944 design "Pennycress," which delicately depicts a plant with slender stems and small round leaves. The dial is a deep green, complemented by gold hands. While chic, it also adds a touch of elegance.

Bryner BL is rooted in the 1943 design "Bryner," which features fern-like leaves and small flowers illustrated in a gradient from navy to blue. The dial is blue-gray, and the hands are silver. Its subdued tones allow it to blend seamlessly with various wall colors, whether white or wood grain.

The 290mm size is ideal for living rooms and walls viewed from a distance. Its dial color stands out, making it a focal point in the room. The 210mm size is perfect for bedrooms, entryways, studies, or kitchens—places where you see it up close or where the wall is already adorned with many items.

Moreover, the shape of this clock is characteristic not only from the front but also from the side. It tapers gently towards the dial, eliminating protrusions at the edge. This design minimizes shadows from the edge, making the thickness of the body less noticeable when placed on the wall, giving the impression that only the dial is floating—a refined design.

The Father of Danish Design

ARNE JACOBSEN is one of the most influential architects and designers of the 20th century, hailing from Denmark. He is often referred to as the father of Danish design, having laid the foundation for modern Nordic design. "I do not create beautiful things; I create what is needed," is a quote from JACOBSEN. His meticulously calculated products embody both the creator's perspective and the user's viewpoint at a high level, earning him acclaim not only in Denmark but worldwide.
