聖母の光

「ブナの生ずるところ、その土地は美しい。」
その優美な森の聖母とも呼ばれるブナは、秋になれば良質の土壌をつくりだす青葉とたっぷりと水を蓄える保水力で周囲の命の源のような存在です。
日本にも広く分布しているブナですが、その代表的な産地といえば、世界遺産にも登録された白神山地の原生的なブナ林でしょう。

その白神山地のある青森県に、ブナを有効利用して作られる独創的な木工品「ブナコ」があります。
ブナコという名前は、この技術的な特色であるブナ材のテープをコイル状に巻くというブナコイルを津軽弁でもじったもの。
ブナをかつらむきにした後、幅10mm、厚さ1mmほどのテープ状に加工し、巻き型をあて、コイル状に器等の形にしていく製法は、木材資源を有効に活用できる画期的なもの。
たとえば、木のブロックから削り出して作るロクロ挽きの場合、直径20ンチ、高さ8センチのサラダボウルを木のブロックから削り出すと体積にして5,800立方センチ程の木の固まりが必要となります。
これをブナコの製法で作ると、たった160立方センチ程の材料があれば作ることが出来ます。

ブナコは、原材料の加工から完成までひとつひとつ手作りされています。
生産工程は、細かなものまで数えると３０工程ほどにもなり、ロクロ挽きに比べ労力と時間が必要ですが、貴重な木材の無駄が無いだけでなく、割れや狂いも無く、ロクロでは作れないユニークな形状を作り出せる特徴があります。

この宇宙船を思わせるライトは、そのブナコの製法で作られた代表的な作品です。
昼間の姿はナチュラルな白木が美しいオブジェのような存在。
それが夜になると一転、オレンジ色に浮かび上がる宇宙船のよう。

神秘的で幻想的な空間をつくりだす、自然素材であるブナ材の透過光は、心を和ませ癒す力を感じさせます。
まるで、それは聖母の光のような。
