MAKITA SHOTEN

Parasol Purple Okra

A parasol that feels great under the summer sky.

Inspired by sliced okra, the "Murasaki Okra" features a design crafted with purple, reddish-purple, and blue threads. The jacquard-woven fabric creates a beautiful interplay of colors that change in intensity depending on the viewing angle, making this parasol a delight not only for the person holding it but also for those who admire its beauty.

"A parasol that brings joy to hold"
"A parasol that looks a little more wonderful"
"A parasol you want to cherish"
These are the aspirations of Makita Shoten.

Delicate Craftsmanship and Commitment

In the Fujikurok region, silk fabrics dyed with the rich spring water from Mount Fuji have been woven for centuries. The bold and large patterns created using the spring water from Mount Fuji and the latest electronic jacquard weaving technology embody Makita Shoten's dedication to craftsmanship.

Founded in 1866, Makita Shoten began by selling silk fabrics in Osaka, Kyoto, and Tokyo. Since the 1950s, with the spread of synthetic fibers, they have utilized the techniques developed in dyeing to establish themselves as a major production hub for uniquely dyed parasol fabrics. Makita Shoten also produces fabrics for the long-established umbrella manufacturer Maehara Koeki Shoten, showcasing their 150 years of history in fabric creation and artisan skills.

The most distinctive feature of Makita Shoten's parasols is that they are made by a textile manufacturer, with original production encompassing fabric design, weaving, and umbrella manufacturing. While preserving the spirit of traditional craftsmanship, Makita Shoten continues to evolve with the acquisition of overseas technologies and the introduction of new equipment. Using electronic jacquard weaving machines that allow for unrestricted design, they treat the warp threads as a canvas and the weft threads as paint, resulting in umbrellas adorned with various patterns.

In Japan, where approximately 90% of the market consists of imported products, Makita Shoten is committed to domestic production, carefully crafting each umbrella using the elegant Koshu weaving technique. The vibrant colors and the three-dimensional quality of the patterns give the umbrellas a sense of luxury, and the inside features an inverted pattern, allowing the user to enjoy the design as well. Additionally, the frame is tailored to match the weight, form, and fabric, achieving over 90% UV protection.

An Umbrella That Brings Joy to Everyone

The "Sai" series of parasols from Makita Shoten is designed to be enjoyed under the summer sun, inspired by vegetables that thrive under the abundant sunlight, including corn, carrots, flower beans, napa cabbage, purple okra, enoki mushrooms, and beans. By using stretch threads that were previously not possible in traditional umbrella fabrics, the Sai series features wavy fabric patterns, a bumpy texture, and soft-colored threads that create a gentle expression. Like vegetables that grow happily under the sun's blessings, these parasols are perfect for enjoying the sunshine.

In Japan, umbrellas are considered auspicious due to their expanding shape, symbolizing the invitation of good fortune. There is a cultural tradition where mothers give umbrellas to their daughters as part of their wedding trousseau, wishing for their future happiness. This parasol is highly recommended as a gift for women.
