Introducing the "Enoki," a stunning umbrella featuring a jacquard pattern of polka dots that gracefully transitions from the edge of the fabric towards the inside. Crafted in a soft light brown reminiscent of cream and café au lait, this design exudes a calm sophistication perfect for adults. When closed, the umbrella showcases a charming crinkled texture and a delightful tactile sensation from the polka dot pattern, making it visually appealing whether open or closed.
"A fun umbrella to carry."
"A stylish umbrella that enhances your look."
"An umbrella you’ll want to cherish."
These are the aspirations of Makita Shoten.
Delicate Craftsmanship and Commitment
In the Fujikofu region, silk fabrics dyed with the abundant spring water from Mount Fuji have been woven for centuries. The bold and large patterns created using this pure spring water and the latest electronic jacquard weaving machines embody Makita Shoten's dedication to craftsmanship.
Founded in 1866, Makita Shoten began by selling silk textiles in Osaka, Kyoto, and Tokyo. After the 1950s, with the rise of synthetic fibers, the company established itself as a major production hub for unique pre-dyed umbrella fabrics, utilizing the techniques honed in traditional textile weaving. Makita Shoten also produces fabrics for the long-established umbrella manufacturer Maehara Koeki Shoten, showcasing its 150 years of expertise and craftsmanship in fabric production since the Edo period.
The most distinctive feature of Makita Shoten's umbrellas is that they are made by a textile manufacturer, with original production encompassing fabric design, weaving, and umbrella manufacturing. While preserving the spirit of traditional craftsmanship, Makita Shoten continues to evolve with the acquisition of techniques from abroad and the introduction of new equipment. Using electronic jacquard weaving machines that allow for unrestricted design, the company weaves vibrant patterns, treating the warp threads as a canvas and the weft threads as paint, resulting in beautifully crafted umbrellas.
In a market where approximately 90% of umbrellas are imported, Makita Shoten is committed to domestic production, carefully crafting each umbrella using elegant Koshu weaving. The vibrant colors and three-dimensional patterns create a sense of luxury, and the inside of the umbrella features a reversed pattern, allowing the user to enjoy the design as well. The framework is tailored to the weight, shape, and fabric, achieving over 90% UV protection.
An Umbrella That Brings Joy to Everyone
The "Sai" series of sun umbrellas from Makita Shoten is designed for enjoyment under the summer sun, inspired by vegetables that thrive in abundant sunlight. This series includes seven varieties: corn, carrot, flower bean, Chinese cabbage, purple okra, enoki, and bean. By incorporating stretch threads that were previously unusable in traditional umbrella fabrics, the Sai series features a wavy fabric pattern, a delightful texture, and soft hues that create a gentle appearance. Like vegetables flourishing under the sun's blessings, these umbrellas allow for a joyful interaction with sunlight.
In Japan, umbrellas are considered auspicious due to their wide-open shape, symbolizing the invitation of good fortune. There is a cultural tradition where mothers gift umbrellas to their daughters as part of their marriage dowry, wishing for their future happiness. This sun umbrella is a recommended gift for women.
