Psychedelic in design yet featuring a subdued green and earthy orange, the stylish "Mame" umbrella is a true standout. The orange lines spread out in a circular pattern, creating a design that resembles green bean motifs bursting outward. With a white top thread used in the base fabric, it adds a glossy finish that gives this parasol a unique vibrancy.
"A fun umbrella to carry"
"A stylish umbrella that enhances your look"
"An umbrella you’ll want to cherish"
These are the aspirations of Makita Shoten.
Delicate Craftsmanship and Commitment
In the Fujikofu region, silk fabrics dyed with the rich spring water from Mount Fuji have been woven for centuries. The bold and large patterns created using the clear-dyed spring water from Mount Fuji and the latest electronic Jacquard weaving technology embody Makita Shoten's dedication to craftsmanship.
Founded in 1866, Makita Shoten began by selling silk fabrics in Osaka, Kyoto, and Tokyo. After the 1950s, with the spread of synthetic fibers, they utilized the techniques honed in yarn-dyed fabrics to establish themselves as a major production hub for unique yarn-dyed umbrella fabrics. Makita Shoten also produces fabrics for the long-established umbrella manufacturer Maehara Koeki Shoten, showcasing 150 years of history in fabric creation and artisan skills.
The most distinctive feature of Makita Shoten's parasols is that they are made by a textile manufacturer, with original production from fabric design and weaving to umbrella manufacturing. While preserving the spirit of traditional craftsmanship, Makita Shoten has continued to evolve with the acquisition of overseas techniques and the introduction of new equipment. By using electronic Jacquard weaving machines that allow for unrestricted design, they treat the warp threads as a canvas and the weft threads as paint, resulting in umbrellas adorned with various intricate patterns.
In a market where approximately 90% of umbrellas are imported, Makita Shoten is committed to domestic production, carefully crafting each umbrella using the elegant Koshu weaving technique. The vibrant colors and the three-dimensional quality of the patterns create a sense of luxury, and the inside of the umbrella features an inverted pattern, allowing the user to enjoy the design as well. Additionally, the frame is tailored to the weight, shape, and fabric, meeting a UV processing standard of over 90% for UV protection.
An Umbrella That Brings Joy to Everyone
The "Sai" series of parasols from Makita Shoten is designed to be enjoyed under the summer sun, inspired by vegetables that thrive under abundant sunlight, including corn, carrots, flower beans, Chinese cabbage, purple okra, enoki mushrooms, and beans. By utilizing stretch threads that traditional umbrella fabrics could not accommodate, the Sai series features a wavy fabric pattern, a playful texture, and soft-colored threads that create a gentle expression. Just like vegetables that grow abundantly under the sun's blessings, these parasols are a delightful companion for sunny days.
In Japan, umbrellas are considered auspicious due to their wide-open shape, symbolizing the invitation of good fortune. There is a cultural tradition where mothers gift umbrellas to their daughters as part of their wedding trousseau, wishing for their happiness. This makes the Sai series an excellent gift for women.
