Products Created Using Traditional Coloring Methods

The colors of tone products are created using traditional techniques of Takaoka copperware, which utilize the properties of copper material without the use of paint. This method involves corroding the surface of the metal with various chemicals that have been passed down through generations, bringing out the natural colors of copper. The resulting colors include bronze, boiled color, sentoku color, nabe-naga color, red copper color, and burnt blue copper color, among others. Through various combinations of techniques and chemicals, dozens of color variations are produced. The methods of color extraction have been researched and developed through trial and error by our predecessors, and these coloring techniques are truly practical, representing a method of coloring that does not turn its back on nature.

The mirror is a small mirror that combines a colored conical copper plate with a mirror. When used on a table, it is designed to be at the perfect angle to see your face, and by putting your hand through the leather strap, it can also be used as a handheld mirror. Its simple shape allows it to roll gently when placed down, and combined with the color of the copper, it creates a unique presence. Takaoka copperware has a history of 400 years, beginning in the Edo period when Lord Maeda Toshinaga of the Kaga Domain invited foundry artisans to promote industry. In the field of copperware, including vases, tea ceremony utensils, ornaments, Buddhist implements, and copper statues, it still holds about 90% of the national market share and is recognized not only in Japan but also around the world as a traditional craft.

tone is a brand that creates tools for living, started by the Orii Coloring Factory in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, in 1950. The Orii Coloring Factory has been dedicated to the coloring process within the division of labor of traditional Takaoka copperware since its founding. About ten years ago, there was growing concern about the loss of traditional Japanese industries, and the third generation, wanting to move from a passive approach of waiting for work within the division of labor to a more proactive stance in manufacturing, sought to learn new coloring techniques to create more original products. They create tools for living that can be used for a long time, unconsciously changing their usage and location.
