Skirts come in all kinds of shapes, yet most of us tend to reach for the same silhouette every time. That's probably why so many people find their outfits ending up looking the same, again and again.
This time, we're introducing an original panelled skirt that blends together the "best parts" of many different skirt styles. Pair it with a simple T-shirt and it becomes the elegant star of the outfit; wear it with an oversized top and it plays the perfect supporting role, keeping the overall look neat. What sets it apart is the lightness of the cut-and-sew fabric combined with a beautifully considered panel design, resulting in a silhouette that feels fresh even though it seems like something that should have existed all along.
Cilo Ultima Tenjiku refers to a plain-woven fabric made by cilo-twisting Ultima yarn (twisting together two rough strands before they become thread) and then weaving it as both warp and weft. It's true that despite being a cut-and-sew fabric, it has just the right thickness and body, and depending on the light, you can even catch a subtle sheen.
"Ultima" is a yarn spun with extra time and care from an extremely rare type of cotton grown using snowmelt water in California's San Joaquin Valley, letting you enjoy the gentle texture of the cotton itself. With cut-and-sew bottoms, there's always a worry about surface wear appearing after repeated washing, but because this fabric uses yarn that resists damage in its tenjiku knit, it stays stable and is less likely to skew even after washing.
▲At the front, the panel flares out from around knee level
▲At the back, it falls in a clean, straight line with a slit
The ZUTTO Cilo Ultima Tenjiku Panelled Flare Skirt is a piece that gives two different impressions depending on which way you're facing: the front looks like a voluminous, glamorous flare skirt, while the back has the cool, tight silhouette of an A-line skirt.
The panel flares out starting from just above the knee, and to make the most of that flare's volume, the rest of the skirt was designed with a clean, streamlined silhouette. As we'll explain below, this streamlined shape makes the hips look nicely slim, which means that whether you tuck your top in or leave it out, your lower half won't look overly large. The slit also helps reduce "that stretched-out look long skirts often have," so the skirt looks good whether you're viewed from the front or the back.
We also paid close attention to functional details, so you won't feel the small stresses that often come with wearing cut-and-sew skirts like this. Stitching has been added to the waist elastic so it won't twist or fold over, and seam pockets have been added on both sides, making it easy to wear every day.
ZUTTO staff members tried on the Cilo Ultima Tenjiku Panelled Flare Skirt and put together outfits to share what they liked about it.
▶︎ Since it doesn't cling to the body: a T-shirt and sandals for a classic summer look
"It's cut-and-sew, but it has enough thickness that you don't have to worry about underwear lines showing—I really appreciate that."
On those unbearably hot summer days, you just want to wear a skirt instead of pants. A long cut-and-sew skirt you can throw on with a single layer pairs beautifully with sandals. It's thick enough that you don't have to worry about underwear showing through or leaving a line, making it just as useful for relaxing at home as for heading out.
▶︎ A flare that doesn't feel childish and is easy to walk in: the panel design starting above the knee
"The flare panel at the front feels fresh, and the big plus is that you can wear it without it looking childish."
When you first see this skirt in the product catalog, the front panel is probably the first thing that catches your eye. But unlike a photo of the product alone, when you actually see someone wearing it, the panel looks surprisingly natural—there's no sense of oddness at all. It's natural, and since it doesn't flare out too wide, it still looks grown-up. If you love simple clothes but are drawn to a design with just a bit of a twist, I'd really encourage you to try this one. I think it would also pair nicely with more mode-style clothing, bags, and accessories, even though it's elegant.
▶︎ Thanks to a silhouette that keeps the hips and back view looking neat: it doesn't spread out even under a jacket
"I've always avoided flare skirts because I'm self-conscious about my hips, but I think I could actually wear this one."
Unlike A-line skirts with gathers, this skirt has no design details around the waist, which is what makes it look so clean and streamlined. Until the height of summer, I think there are many chances to go out wearing an outer layer, but even when wearing a larger-sized outer layer, the back view doesn't look bulky. The reason is that the back of the skirt is straight, with a slit. The airiness from the slit means it looks lovely even when a shirt is layered over the top. It has such a flattering silhouette that even staff members who aren't confident about their waist area want to try it.
▶︎You don't have to be picky about tops—it never looks unflattering: even paired with a big-silhouette top
"Thanks to the exquisite paneling, it doesn't look unflattering even without tucking in your top, so it seems great for relaxing time too."
Following on from that clean look around the waist mentioned earlier—when you loosely wear a T-shirt that's about two sizes too big, reaching almost down to your hips, if the skirt flares out too, it can end up looking bulky. But with this skirt, I think it stays looking neat even paired with an oversized T-shirt or hoodie. Yet because there's paneling from the knee down, it doesn't look like what you'd typically call an ordinary skirt.A cut-and-sew skirt that's clean and streamlined while making underwear lines hard to notice—it means you can tuck in a smaller T-shirt, but also pair it with a looser, relaxed one. Since it's a type I'd never seen before, it feels really fresh.
Depending on your mood that day, aren't there times when you don't want to tuck in your top at the waist? Times when you feel like being relaxed, or don't want to feel even a little bit of constriction. Since you want to look stylish and lovely even while relaxing, a skirt that doesn't look unflattering even without tucking in your T-shirt is truly handy to have.
The Cellulose Ultima Tenjiku Paneled Flare Skirt had qualities that photos alone just can't capture. In warmer seasons, pair it with a T-shirt or blouse; in cooler seasons, with a hoodie or knit. Combined with a length that goes well with any kind of footwear—sneakers, sandals, or boots—it's a skirt you'll want to reach for whenever you're stuck on what to wear, and one that's well worth having a single piece of in your wardrobe.
It seems the staff tried it on themselves and decided to buy it. Please do take a look at the catalog page too.
