Create a stylish autumn-winter look with wool×check pattern. Wide pants made with recycled wool.

When it comes to autumn and winter, there's an abundance of warm materials for tops, like knits and down jackets, but bottoms don't offer nearly as many options. Many people may find themselves relying on functional inner leggings underneath and wearing the same material year-round. This time, ZUTTO has created something to add to your autumn-winter bottoms lineup: the "Renewool Twill Check Straight Pants," made from warm wool. They pair beautifully with plain sweaters, adding a sense of the season and a touch of elegance to your winter wardrobe.

What is sustainable wool?

The first thing to note is "Renewool," the recycled wool material used in the Renewool Twill Check Straight Pants. It's a material from Bishu, where every process—from raw material sourcing to shoddy (recycled wool fiber), spinning, weaving, and finishing—is carried out entirely within Japan.

This ZUTTO original stole also uses recycled wool from Bishu.

In Bishu (the area centered around Ichinomiya City in Aichi Prefecture), Japan's largest wool textile production region, techniques for reprocessing worn-out sweaters and waste cotton from spinning mills into fiber again through shoddy processing have developed over more than half a century. It's a region where the idea of recycling took root long before recycled materials became commonplace as they are today.

This Renewool fabric is similarly made using collected clothing and unused yarn that has undergone shoddy processing as raw material.

Looking at the process from start to finish: first, wool-based clothing and unused yarn are collected, and the collected clothing is sorted by color through visual inspection by craftspeople. The sorted clothing is then finely cut and shredded, loosened using a machine fitted with scratching needles to create felt-like shoddy raw material, and finally spun into yarn to complete the process. Beyond simply reusing materials, this method reduces transportation and production energy compared to using new wool, cutting CO2 emissions and water usage—making it a truly sustainable material.

This entire sequence of processes is carefully carried out domestically, resulting in a fabric quality that's just as beautiful as new wool. Additionally, the fabric is a blend of 70% wool with the remainder mainly consisting of domestically produced recycled polyester, giving it a stretch that pure 100% wool fabric lacks. This stretch contributes to the pants' comfortable fit and ease of movement.

Lined for extra warmth

Some people may worry about wool bottoms feeling itchy against the skin, but there's no need for concern with the Renewool Twill Check Straight Pants, since they come with a lining.

While the fabric feels light and somewhat thin, the high 70% wool content combined with the lining makes it difficult for cold wind to pass through, keeping you warm through autumn and winter.

A wide silhouette that looks stylish

The overall silhouette leans toward wide-legged. Although they feature a front-opening zip design, elastic is only inserted at the back of the waist, making them comfortable to wear for a relatively wide range of body sizes. Additionally, the tucks placed at the front create dimension, allowing the pants to look neat and well-fitted even when tucked in.

Whether you pair them with a compact top and tuck it in for a streamlined look, or match them with a loose-fitting top for a relaxed impression, this shape effortlessly comes together stylishly either way.

As for length, a staff member who is 163cm tall and usually wears a size M tried them on, and the length falls right around the ankle—just barely showing or not showing the ankle bone. Even when paired with flat shoes, the hem won't drag on the ground. Since the back of the waist is elastic and the overall wide silhouette offers plenty of room, you can also layer thick tights underneath during the coldest months.

Two check patterns chosen for easy coordination.

The colors, from left, are GREY, a windowpane check in grey×black, and NAVY, a check in navy×brown.

Both colors were chosen for their understated tones, so the pattern blends smoothly into your autumn-winter wardrobe without standing out too much. Since plain sweaters and outerwear tend to dominate in autumn and winter, having a patterned bottom adds a touch of elegance to your overall look.

ZUTTO now offers a clothing alteration service.

Until now, whenever a customer's beloved item broke, we did our best to work with the maker to create a repair process. However, when it came to clothing, we hadn't yet developed anything that could be called a ZUTTO-original initiative. Now that we've set up an in-house atelier for making clothes, "clothing alterations and repairs" have become possible, and we've decided to launch this as a paid service for our customers.

"I'd like to have the hem of a skirt I bought shortened by 3cm."

"There's a hole in a knit I own, and I'd like it darned."

"I'd like the hem of my denim pants taken up while keeping the aging on the hem intact."

We accept requests like these for mending and altering clothing. Of course, this includes items purchased at ZUTTO, but we will also do our best to accept items purchased elsewhere.
