【Brand Story】Dono's leather goods that deepen in character the more you use them. Fine Italian leather meets meticulous Japanese craftsmanship.

Based in a workshop in Fukuoka Prefecture, Dono is the factory brand of a manufacturer with a proven track record of producing OEM goods for well-known brands since its founding in 1974. In their simple, timeless leather goods, you can directly sense the character of each leather and the maker's dedication.

This winter, we've brought in a new special-order pochette bag featuring studs, along with new colors of the brand's mainstay mini wallet. Each piece uses a different leather, offering a chance to enjoy the distinct character of each hide.

A substantial special-order bag with studs & mini wallet

There are two special-order items. First is the 【Special Order】Mini Pochette Bag STUDS, a compact shoulder bag from the brand's in-line collection, given studs as the special-order touch.

By adding silver-colored studs, the basic design takes on a modish air, giving the bag a solid presence within any outfit.

Despite its compact size, the interior is divided into three sections, making it a practical and easy-to-use design.

The second item is the Envelope Mini Wallet, made with studs added to a specially ordered color.

The special-order NAVY STUDS color is an exquisite blend of blue and green.

This envelope-shaped coin purse has a flap that doubles as a stopper, so you never have to worry about coins spilling out.

The mini wallet comes in five varieties in total, including the special-order version.

Each of these studs is hand-set one by one. Their beautifully aligned arrangement speaks to the careful craftsmanship behind them.

In preparing this special-order collection, we had the chance to hear once again about Dono's brand philosophy and its materials. When the company was founded in 1974, it mainly produced belts, taking on various OEM work through its connections for sourcing quality leather from overseas. It was around the early 2000s that they began making the bags and wallets that have led to what Dono is today.

They choose fine Italian leather as their material, designing and crafting products based on the experience they've cultivated over many years of leatherworking.

Craftsmanship that conveys the distinct character of each leather

"The 【Special Order】Mini Pochette Bag STUDS uses cowhide called SETA from Conceria La Bretagna, a tannery in Tuscany. SETA means 'silk' in Italian, and its smooth texture evokes that very quality. It's also a leather that's more environmentally considerate, tanned using a metal-free process that doesn't rely on minerals."

"On the other hand, the 'Buttero' leather used for the special-order NAVY STUDS version of the Envelope Mini Wallet comes from Walpier, a long-established Italian tannery. It's tanned using 100% vegetable tannin. Like SETA, we've heard that Buttero's wastewater is also handled with care to avoid polluting the natural environment. We chose it because its texture and character are the complete opposite of 'Selvaggio,' which is used for the other colors (NUM, BLACK, BLACK STUDS)."

The one in front (BLACK) uses "Selvaggio," known for its distinctive mottled pattern, while the one in back (Special Order NAVY STUDS) uses "Buttero," which is plump and smooth.

"As for care, both SETA and Buttero already contain plenty of oil, so there's no need for immediate maintenance. Once you feel the surface starting to dry out, apply an oil or cream made specifically for natural leather."

Recommended care item: TAPIR's Lederpflege Cream. Made entirely from natural ingredients, it has a refreshing citrus scent.

Enjoying the aging of the studs along with the leather

The "studs" that serve as a key feature of the special-order items were chosen for a reason unique to this leather goods brand.

"We incorporated these hand-set studs so that customers could enjoy watching them change over time, just like the leather. Since they're made of brass, the gold base material starts to show through as you use them."

It's precisely because these are simple, timeless items that a depth emerges from continued long-term use. Though the materials differ—leather and metal—there's a shared spirit in how they're used, reflecting the brand's desire to bring joy through everyday use.

Carefully selecting materials to create basic yet beautiful items

Dono creates leather goods with simple designs and a timeless beauty. Among the leathers used, the one mentioned earlier—"Selvaggio"—is imported exclusively within Japan for use in their products.

Selvaggio is known as a leather that develops beautiful changes over time, and its defining feature is its distinctive mottled pattern. This pattern emerges precisely because the leather is processed thin, giving each piece its own unique expression.

This shows the Envelope Wallet, also made with Selvaggio, after about one month of use.
