France is known as the heart of the glamorous fashion world, where a long history of craftsmanship—including that of renowned collection brands—continues to this day. It is here that MARVELETS carries on the spirit of that craftsmanship, carefully handling everything from sourcing materials to creating bags. We'd like to introduce the bags of MARVELETS, each one born from the hands of a single craftsman in Okayama Prefecture, Japan.

Shuji Mitsuda, the founder and maker behind MARVELETS, was influenced by his mother, who worked as a couture designer, and went on to work as a fashion designer in Paris, France. It was a chance visit to a senior designer's bag workshop that led him to be struck by the charm of leather and the fascination of working with it—an experience that would later become the catalyst for starting MARVELETS.

Clothing is typically completed through the hands of many people. Bags, by contrast, hold a different kind of appeal: leather can be dyed to just the color one imagines, and the piece can be finished almost entirely by hand, alone. Drawn to this appeal, Mitsuda relocated to Okayama Prefecture, an environment where he could devote himself more fully to bag making, and started MARVELETS there in 2006. 

Mitsuda handles every step of production himself. He creates the patterns, sews, dyes, and finishes each piece with his own hands before it becomes a finished product. Because he is both the designer and the craftsman who makes the bags with his own hands, he is able to express the delicate tension where design (a two-dimensional concept) and pattern (a three-dimensional form) push against each other.

"Things that deepen with the passing of time." "Things that grow more beloved as they fade." This is the concept behind Mitsuda's approach to making things. Influenced by Europeans, who understand that objects gain value when used with care over a long time, Mitsuda creates bags that remain unswayed by passing trends—pieces that can be picked up and used at any time, yet carry a one-of-a-kind sensibility all their own.

When he was a fashion designer, Mitsuda spent his time creating patterns for renowned collection brands in Paris. That same technique can be glimpsed in the bags of MARVELETS.

The Linen Leather Shoulder Bag GULUTO is a shoulder bag featuring a rounded linen body accented with a leather belt. What sets it apart from typical shoulder bags is the placement of the shoulder strap. While most shoulder bags have straps attached symmetrically on both sides, this bag has a design where, viewed from either the front or the back, only the right half extends straight upward.

While the opening curves gently, the asymmetrical shoulder strap follows the natural line of the body, so the contents remain discreetly hidden from view. Built on a simple pattern, the bag achieves a refined, highly practical finish with no wasted elements.

Inside, there is a zippered pocket, and on the outer side there is a small pocket with a button closure—perfect for storing a smartphone or a commuter pass, items you reach for often. The cowhide belt on the outside serves as an accent, and the softly rounded shape gently cradles your belongings.

Another appeal of MARVELETS lies in the materials used for its bags: horsehide, cowhide, and linen. The brand is committed to natural materials, and takes great care to bring out the very best in each one.

Take, for example, the Leather Shoulder Bag SYALO, generously made with horsehide. Its lustrous, soft texture immediately catches the eye—but this leather originally started out in a state known as "crust," before being transformed by MARVELETS itself. "Crust" refers to leather right after tanning, before it has absorbed any oil. Typically, a tanner would take leather from this state and either infuse it with plenty of oil to create "nume leather" or apply dye. At MARVELETS, however, Mitsuda himself adjusts the oil content, blends the colors, dyes, and finishes the leather, creating original products starting from the raw material itself.

The leather is primarily tanned using vegetable tanning, which relies on tannins extracted from tree bark. Once the piece has taken its finished form, it undergoes overdyeing (garment dyeing). Overdyeing involves soaking an already-sized piece in dye, which not only imparts color but also causes slight shrinkage, producing a distinctive rippling and wrinkled texture. Compared to dyeing before the product is assembled, this method brings out a softer nuance in the leather, giving it the look of something well-worn, yet with an exquisitely refined finish. Bags made with overdyeing gradually change in tone as they are used, gaining more luster over time—a quality unique to leather goods.

At MARVELETS, linen is used just as generously as leather. The Linen Leather Shoulder Bag FONIKKU is a 2-way bag—usable as either a shoulder bag or a handbag—featuring a linen body with a cowhide belt. The thick linen fabric comes from Hardman's, a linen maker based in Northern Ireland.

Linen renowned worldwide as the representative yarn of "Irish linen" is prized for its supple durability and pleasant feel against the skin. MARVELETS commissions this yarn to a weaving mill in Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture, to produce its fabric. The carefully woven fabric has a tight, dense weave, giving it enough durability to comfortably hold a good amount of luggage. The herringbone-woven fabric is brushed to a soft finish that fits the body well.

Furthermore, the various parts that join the leather and linen together, as well as the hooks and buttons at the opening, are made of materials such as copper and brass. These parts not only enhance the bag's durability but also gradually deepen in color as they are used, adding to their character over time. MARVELETS bags have an appeal that draws out the inherent characteristics of materials in ways that human hands alone could never achieve. These are truly bags that make you want to use them with your own hands and watch them develop over time.

The full-leather Leather Shoulder Bag SYALO takes on a much more refined, classic air when paired with a basic turtleneck sweater or tartan check.

All of the MARVELETS products introduced here have undergone over-dyeing (garment dyeing). Over-dyeing has certain characteristics as noted below, so please check these points before use.

■ Regarding Color Transfer and Fading

Over-dyed products are prone to color transfer and fading when first used. This tends to happen especially with full-leather types. For this reason, when you first start using the item, please avoid pairing it with light-colored clothing and instead wear it with darker-colored items.

Please note that as you continue using the product, excess color on the surface will wear off, and the fading will gradually settle down. In the case of leather, as it is used over time, it will develop a richer sheen along with its change in color, so please enjoy watching this transformation.

■ Regarding Use and Storage

Over-dyed products are sensitive to heat. Especially when the item is new, please avoid using or storing it in situations with high temperature or humidity, such as the following.

・Do not store the item in places exposed to direct sunlight or in humid areas such as bathrooms.

・If you sweat or get caught in the rain while wearing a shoulder bag on your shoulder, the color may transfer onto your clothing. Please avoid using the item in situations where it may get wet.

■ If the Item Gets Wet

If the item happens to get wet, immediately blot the moisture with a dry cloth and let it dry thoroughly.
