Seeking something light to carry, yet still unmistakably leather

When it comes to summer bags, the basket bag has become something of a classic. It captures the feeling of the season and is the kind of bag you'd want to have at least one of, but depending on the occasion or setting, it doesn't always fit, and the truth is that its range of use ends up being fairly limited.
Summer outfits tend to be full of colorful accessories and other small "spice" items, and to keep such a look sharp, a bit of leather's substantial weight and presence is welcome—but a large leather bag can sometimes make that same substantial feeling tip over into stuffiness in the heat. So this time, we asked REN to create a special-order leather mini bag for us.
The result is something truly special, made using a new leather that the team at REN—specialists in leather bags—gave their full endorsement, saying, "We really recommend this one!"

The special-order goat leather, 【MIES】

【MIES】is a vegetable-tanned goat leather, tanned using tannins extracted from the bark and leaves of plants. Its grain surface has a naturally lustrous sheen, finely covered with a natural pebbled texture, and because its fibers are tightly interwoven and dense, it resists losing its shape and holds up well against friction. Traditionally in high demand for garments such as gloves and hats, it offers just the right amount of body while shifting supplely in expression, with an elegant texture that is part of its appeal. It has little stretch, is highly durable, and is a leather that rewards use with a beautiful, natural aging over time.

"Beautiful aging" in leather refers to the way oil forms a film-like sheen on the surface, gradually deepening the color—and this leather, being tannin-tanned, readily absorbs oils. That's exactly why, through everyday use, the natural oils from your hands bring out that sheen surprisingly early on. On the flip side, if you frequently apply hand cream, it can sometimes leave unintended marks, so those who are particular about this should keep that in mind.

When you squeeze MIES leather in your hand, it makes a "squeak, squeak" sound. This is known as "naki-gawa" (crying leather), and it's said to be a sign of quality leather, where the quality of the raw hide and the degree of tanning have come together in just the right balance.

For this special order, we chose a slightly olive-tinged gray, which we've named GOOSE GREY. Depending on the light, it can look more gray in some settings and reveal a deeper olive tone in others—a genuinely interesting color. It should bring out leather's pleasant weight and presence in any season.

A special-order mini leather bag and wallet to use from summer onward

Slim, yet holds more than you'd expect — the Canister Bottle

The 'Canister Bottle' turns a simple round tube shape into a bag as it is. Cinching the opening tight changes its form and expression, giving it a charm quite different from your usual leather bag. This shape of bag is easy to open and close, and having a wide opening also makes it easy to take things out—both happy points.
The inside is lined with unbleached fabric, making it easy to see what's inside, and adding even more durability compared to leather alone.

It looks slim, but it actually holds more than you'd expect. While it's true that a small bag pairs best with a small wallet, thanks to its 26cm height, it can actually fit a long wallet or even a 500ml plastic bottle. Drawstring bags tend to come in rounder shapes, but REN's Canister Bottle has a neat, vertical silhouette that gives off a sharp, grown-up impression.

The shoulder strap is long, so you can wear it over the shoulder or crossbody. You can also tie the soft cord at whatever length suits you and carry it by hand—it's fun to think up different ways to wear it.

The satisfying "click" — the Gamaguchi Pochette

The 'Gamaguchi Pochette' also features lovely antique-style hardware. The gamaguchi (clasp-frame purse) has a nostalgic charm, and it's surprising how easy to pair it becomes when combined with refined leather. The clasp is designed to be operated with one hand, and the satisfying click as it snaps shut makes this a bag that's simply fun to use.

Inside the Gamaguchi Pochette, there's no fabric lining—just the raw brushed leather. Since it's slim with a shallow gusset, it was intentionally left without any volume-adding features, so you can enjoy the leather itself.
If you want to keep its neat shape while in use, it holds about a smartphone, a mini wallet, a handkerchief, tissues, and lip balm—but if you don't mind it bulging a little, it can actually fit a long wallet or a paperback book too. Feel free to change up what you carry depending on what you need that day.

The shoulder strap is a soft cord with a slightly twisted design that gives it a nice sense of movement. Since this strap also has some length to it, you can wear it over the shoulder or, when you have more to carry, cross it over your body instead. The strap is detachable, so you might try swapping in one of your own to change up the look.

The "just right" wallet — Sotopoke Wallet

This is the "Sotopoke Wallet," which ZUTTO has featured before. Because it's so easy to use, we asked the maker to create it once again in the special-order leather colors for this collection.

First, let us introduce what makes its construction so distinctive.
Picture a bi-fold wallet for bills and cards, with a plump, pocket-like coin purse attached to the outside. That's essentially the idea behind this design.
Both the opening for the bills and the entrance to the coin pocket face the same direction, so you can access either one without having to turn the wallet around. What's more, the zipper opens in an L-shape rather than along just one edge, making it easy to get your coins out.

Because the coin pocket sits on the outside, the wallet won't bulge and pop open as your coins accumulate — it's nice being able to carry it looking neat and slim.
To go into a bit more detail on the specs: there are 8 card slots, plus two more spots below them for cards. The bill compartment is divided in two by a partition, so you could, for instance, keep your "personal" cash separate from your "household" cash. Of course, you could also just use one side as a temporary spot for receipts.

When it came to making this in the special-order colors, we worried that the silver zipper normally used on REN's Sotopoke Wallet might end up looking too sharp and edgy for this piece, so we decided to use a gold zipper instead, specially for this run. It's a YKK Excella zipper, carefully polished to a smooth finish, which stays snag-free and easy to use even after long-term use.

Choosing the parts to match the leather — things like the cord and the zipper backing fabric — was a task that involved plenty of careful thought and back-and-forth.

Care Tips for Long-Term Use

Not just with this MIES leather, but with all of REN's bags, the maker tries to keep the leather's natural texture as intact as possible, using minimal processing. Because of this, the way each piece ages can vary quite a bit depending on who's using it, even with the same leather. Even without regular care, the leather will gradually darken and develop a natural sheen over time, thanks to the oils from your hands and exposure to sunlight during everyday use. That's part of what makes leather so satisfying and fun to own — in an age when so many things are mass-produced and uniform, isn't it interesting how a material like this naturally comes to reflect your own individual character? At ZUTTO, we believe that this is what attachment really is: the affection you feel once you notice this transformation. "Beautiful aging" in leather looks different for everyone. For regular care, there are two things we recommend: a "waterproofing spray" and a "moisturizing cream."

[Waterproofing Spray]
If you'd like to protect the leather from stains and fading, use a waterproofing spray when you first start using the wallet, and then periodically after that. One thing to keep in mind: please choose a spray based on "fluorocarbon resin." This type will maintain waterproofing for a certain period while preserving the leather's natural texture. On the other hand, we don't recommend sprays based on "silicone resin," since these can cause the surface of the leather to harden.

When applying waterproofing spray, hold the can about 30cm away and spray evenly over the surface. If you spray from too close, the liquid can soak in too much and cause discoloration, so please be careful.

[Moisturizing Cream]
Please choose a cream that is emulsion-based and colorless. In particular, this MIES leather tends to absorb oil readily, so using something with a high oil content, like mink oil, may cause noticeable discoloration in that area.
When using cream, first test it on an inconspicuous spot, such as the bottom of the wallet, and check how it reacts before applying it more broadly.
