The luxurious comfort of the L-shaped fit. The secret behind rasox's stress-free socks

As the weather turns cooler, socks come into play more often. Whether it's the cotton socks you wear year-round or the wool-blend ones you've just pulled out of storage after a seasonal changeover, a closer look often reveals worn-through toes and heels, or loose elastic at the opening. You might think, "Was it my walking style?" or "Did I wear shoes that didn't fit properly?" and reluctantly throw them away—but perhaps the real solution lies in changing the socks themselves. This time, we're featuring rasox, a long-selling brand here at ZUTTO. Many people become hooked after wearing them just once. Let's take a closer look at what makes them feel so good.

Do you wear your everyday socks without giving them much thought?

When it comes to fashion, perhaps few people go so far as to carefully choose socks that suit them. If you've thought, "They'll just wear out anyway..." or "They get dirty, or one always goes missing..., so aren't all socks basically the same?"—we'd love for you to discover the L-shape of rasox, a brand that has pursued the perfect sock down to every last detail.

The socks that people typically reach for without a second thought often have strong elastic at the opening to keep them from slipping down as you walk. That elastic squeezes tightly around the ankle and calf, cutting off circulation and becoming a source of cold feet. What's more, when the shape of the sock itself doesn't match the shape of a human foot, the sole—especially the heel—gets pulled, causing the fabric to bunch up loosely over the top of the foot. This puts extra strain on the fabric as you wear it, leading to wear and tear such as holes.

It was rasox's L-shaped sock that challenged this conventional approach to sock-making.

What kind of sock shape changes the way it feels to wear?

The L-shaped sock proposed by rasoxarose from a simple question: if the ankle moves at a right angle back and forth, why are socks shaped like straight tubes?By eliminating the excess fabric that bunches up on top of the foot and the stretching that occurs at the heel when a sock is worn, wouldn't it be possible to create a sock that's natural both for the sock itself and for the person wearing it? That was the idea.

From this question came the L-shaped, seamlessly knitted sock, made to match the angle of the ankle when standing upright. The line running from the sole of the foot to the calf bends at a right angle at the ankle. This uncompromising commitment to shape is what gives rise to that gentle, enveloping feel when worn.

① No more sagging at the ankle or instep

Because the sock is shaped at a right angle, there's no feeling of tightness when you put your shoes on, and it fits comfortably. This also prevents the sock from slipping down due to loose, sagging fabric, giving it a neater appearance as well.

② Less pressure on the toes

With conventional socks, the toes tend to feel the most pressure when worn. But since the L-shape is knitted to match the shape of the foot when standing, the toe area is roomy and relaxed as well.

③ A natural fit on the sole

Unlike conventional socks, which are designed to be pulled and stretched onto the foot, this construction lets the sole stretch evenly in both directions, resulting in a fit that feels effortless.

④ Stays in place without squeezing

The benefits of the L-shape extend to the heel as well. Rather than prioritizing production efficiency, the socks are made with painstaking care for a comfortable fit, knitted deeply so that they fit around the foot with a snug, puzzle-piece-like precision.

Designed based on ergonomic principles, rasox has also been proven, through thermal testing conducted by the Far Infrared Ray Application Research Association, to offer superior heat retention compared to conventional socks.

Tapered construction

Another distinctive feature is the tapered construction, which widens from the ankle toward the opening of the sock to match the shape of the leg. The elastic is woven in slightly firmer near the ankle and looser near the calf—just enough to avoid feeling tight, while still keeping the sock from slipping down.

*Some items, such as those with intricate patterns, do not feature the tapered construction. Please check the shape of the sock opening to confirm.

From the rasox factory

These L-shaped rasox socks, so different from the rest, are made in a region with a 100-year history of sock production. While ordinary socks typically come off the knitting machine automatically once the process begins, making rasox socks requires close attention and hands-on work by people at every key stage. Using high-quality yarn, each pair is carefully crafted, taking twice as long as it would to make a conventional sock.

The yarn, wound on spools, is fed into the machine and knitted into a tube shape. It takes 4 to 5 minutes to complete one sock. Because the toe of the L-shaped sock can't be knitted automatically, each pair is knitted one at a time using a specialized machine. At this stage, an inspection takes place to check for overlooked flaws, the condition of the elastic, and any inconsistencies.

The inspection process

The sock opening

Once completed, the socks are steamed to set their shape, and then each pair undergoes a final inspection. The rasox logo on the sole is applied one pair at a time using a heat-transfer sticker and iron.

tags and other finishing touches are added, the socks are packaged, and after passing through a metal detector, the product is complete.

Unlike ordinary socks, rasox requires artisans who can operate the machinery, and the number of such craftspeople is said to be dwindling. Made with time and care, rasox socks have such an exceptionally comfortable fit that they've built up a loyal following of repeat customers.

What's the secret to making socks last longer?

Even socks, which are considered consumable items, can be enjoyed for a long time if you keep a few simple points in mind.

・Check the size

It's not just the sock size that matters—take another look at the size of your shoes too. If they're too loose, friction occurs and the socks wear thin inside the shoe.

・Wash in a laundry net

When washing socks, place them in a small laundry net so they don't get tangled with other items.

・Dry flat in the shade

The golden rule is to dry items in the shade to prevent color fading and material deterioration. Rather than hanging with clothespins, laying items flat to dry helps prevent the elastic from stretching out.
