Are you someone who travels light, or someone who packs a lot? I myself used to be the type who packed way too much. I'd worry about not having something I needed while traveling, or not being able to use my favorite items, and end up bringing things I didn't even use in daily life—only to never use them on the trip either. But after traveling again and again, my luggage gradually got lighter, and now people often say, "Wait, that's all you're bringing?" These days, it's a convenient world—even if you forget something, you can always rely on the nearest convenience store when in a bind. Ha!
For those of you who belong to the "just what's necessary" camp, here's a bag we recommend.

Backpack BABY MOIRE<Smaller size>
Backpack MOIRE<Larger size>
For day trips, you won't need a change of clothes, so it's fine to just go with your everyday backpack or bag. That said, if you happen to find something you want to buy, or need to pick up souvenirs while out, a smaller backpack might not zip closed anymore. That's why we recommend the HANSKA Backpack MOIRE.
The Backpack MOIRE is a 2-way bag that works as both a backpack and a tote, so you can switch styles depending on how much you're carrying. Despite its delicate appearance, it's remarkably sturdy, able to withstand up to 10kg of weight—so you can pack it full with confidence. What's more, the bag itself is made of polyester mesh, making it very lightweight and highly durable. The fact that the contents are slightly visible through the mesh might make some hesitant to use it as a travel bag, but since you won't be packing a change of clothes for a day trip, that's not an issue here.
This mesh material is made in Switzerland. Rather than mass-producing and discarding, the approach here does away with the very idea of "waste," reusing materials as raw resources without compromising quality—a 100% recycled fabric that reflects environmental consciousness. This is the kind of craftsmanship you'd expect from Germany, a country known for its environmental leadership. Specifically, the fabric uses organic cotton, the leather is vegetable-tanned, and the mesh material is recycled from things like trampolines and outdoor furniture.
Mesh fabric made from such gentle materials doesn't trap heat easily, which makes it comfortable to wear on your back even during hot weather—another reason it's ideal for day trips. This resistance to humidity would also come in handy in sports settings, not just travel. It's also waterproof, so cleaning it is as simple as wiping away dirt—much easier than caring for regular fabric. The straps are made of leather, adding to the appeal of a backpack that only gets better with use.
Every HANSKA bag shares the feature of being "2-way or 3-way convertible and foldable into a compact size," and this backpack is no exception. Fold it up and tuck it into your main bag, and it becomes a handy secondary bag for trips of one night or longer. If all you need room for is a wallet, pass case, drink, and a small secondary bag, we recommend the smaller Backpack BABY MOIRE. If you want enough room to fit an A4-size item comfortably, go with the Backpack MOIREinstead.

If you're choosing a tote bag, a standard cotton tote bag works well, but a slightly more grown-up design with leather parts also looks appealing. The TAMAR SMALL tote bag from Brady, a traditional British heritage brand founded in 1887, has a round bottom that gives it excellent stability. Its wide opening makes it easy to find things inside—perfect for a day trip. It can hold essentials like a wallet, a plastic bottle or your own reusable bottle, a pass case, a folding umbrella, and even snacks picked up at a convenience store.
Brady is a brand that never compromises on its craftsmanship, having carried on the traditional methods of its founding for more than 130 years, with around 20 artisans still making each piece by hand today. Valued equally for its high functionality and refined design, Brady has become a leading name in outdoor and everyday-use bags, loved by people all over the world.
The material used is Brady's original waterproof-treated fabric called "DRILL DROP." It feels like cotton to the touch, but a polyurethane sheet is actually sandwiched between the layers of cotton fabric, preventing rain and other water from soaking through—making it a bag that holds up well against moisture and dirt.
The handles and various parts are made from bridle leather, a material closely associated with Britain. Bridle leather is an extremely sturdy leather originally used for horse tack, and its ability to withstand heavy loads makes it exceptionally durable. While the handles of a tote bag bought on a whim often become dirty or frayed within a few months, Brady's tote bag handles actually develop more shine and character with use, letting you enjoy a beautiful patina and a special aging process that molds to your hand over time.
One of the great things about a tote bag is its height, which makes it easy to keep tossing in extra items as your load grows.
One reason luggage tends to get lighter with every trip is the desire for "freedom of movement." Taken to the extreme, all you really need for one night is a change of underwear—but for women, grooming items like cosmetics are also necessary, so it's not always that simple.
For those who prefer to travel as light as possible—needing just one set of innerwear and underwear, some cosmetics and skincare, and in summer perhaps a lightweight T-shirt and bottoms to change into—here's a bag we'd recommend.
This compact flap-top bag from STANDARD SUPPLY is sized to sit comfortably on a woman's back. Like a drawstring bag, its opening spreads wide, making it easy to find your belongings. As a daily-use bag you can carry anywhere, anytime, its simple design—free of unnecessary decoration—means you'll never tire of using it.
A zipper on the side lets you access the main compartment even while the flap stays closed, making this a backpack you can rely on as your only bag when traveling, without needing a separate sub-bag. The shoulder straps are fitted with 10mm-thick urethane padding, with tape running through the inside, giving them a gentle structure that puts little strain on your shoulders even when worn for long stretches—a real asset on trips that involve a lot of walking.
Made from a fabric called 64 cloth—a blend of 60% cotton and 40% nylon—this bag has a smooth, high-quality feel and beautiful color, and is remarkably lightweight. Leather accents on the top handle and zippers add a polished look you wouldn't expect from something so light.
The bag is large enough to fit A4-sized items. It can even hold a compact hair iron, so it comfortably fits the basic grooming essentials for an overnight stay. If you think your luggage might grow, tucking a sub-bag inside for peace of mind is a good idea.
▲Rolling up a lightweight bag and tucking it away gives you peace of mind in case your luggage grows.

For those who generally travel light but sometimes need to carry a laptop or tablet, it's a good idea to choose a backpack whose size can be adjusted. A roll-top backpack lets you change its height to suit your needs, so it can accommodate both light and heavy loads.
The roll-top backpack from Kurashiki Hanpu is generously made from top-grade, world-class domestic canvas. It starts out a bit stiff, but softens with use, gradually developing a texture and character all its own over time—a quality that pairs beautifully with its basic shape, one that suits any era, gender, or age. Once worn on the back, the beautiful selvedge accent along the sides makes it immediately clear that this backpack is crafted from premium Kurashiki Hanpu canvas.
The roll-top type, with its wide opening and tube-shaped, sack-like body, is designed to make it easy to slip laptops, tablets, and similar items in and out. Because the top of the backpack has enough extra fabric to be rolled down, you can extend the roll portion when you need more volume, or fold the top over neatly when you're carrying less—letting you adjust the size according to what you're bringing. This flexibility is one of its best features.
You can also access the items in the main compartment through the zipper on the back. For trips where you're not sure whether your luggage will increase, a bag that can adjust in size turns out to be surprisingly handy. A separate sub-bag works too, but if you'd rather keep everything together in one bag, we recommend considering a roll-top type.
Once you're staying two nights or more, you'll naturally need a change of clothes, so a bag sized to properly fit your spare outfits is a good choice. The teardrop-shaped backpack from ARTS&CRAFTS, inspired by classic outdoor style, strikes just the right balance by combining lightweight nylon with substantial, weighty leather.
Daypack CORDURA SPAN ACUTE DAYPACK
This bag uses a nylon called CORDURA SPAN, which resists tearing and abrasion. Despite having a soft, cotton-like texture with a slight nap, it's durable enough to be used in workwear that demands toughness.
The leather covering the base is Chromexcel leather from Horween, a company famous for cordovan, often described as the "finest" of leathers. It's made using a traditional method that slowly works oils deep into the hide, giving it more oil content and a richer, more substantial feel than ordinary leather. It resists stiffening even when wet, and thanks to a uniquely blended natural oil finish, it offers both flexibility and water resistance along with impressive durability. Since backpacks often get set down directly on the ground, having sturdy leather covering the base gives you extra peace of mind about its durability. The more you use it, the more it seems to mold to your body, developing a comfortable, well-worn feel that makes you grow attached to it—a backpack you can love and use for years, unaffected by passing trends.

CANVAS×LEATHER MAIL PURSE BAG LARGE
This bag basically fits one change of clothes but is designed as a 3-way carry, anticipating that your luggage might grow. A wide opening that makes it easy to get things in and out has practically become a given for the bags featured in this journal, and true to form, this one also lets you see the contents easily. The sturdy canvas fabric is hand-stamped, piece by piece, with antique letterpress-style stamps, giving it a dignified, vintage feel and making it a bag that excels in design as well.
Beyond the canvas fabric and leather, both materials that will develop character over time, the individual parts—like the brass hardware used on the bag—have also been deliberately given an aged finish. It's the perfect bag for anyone who enjoys watching their belongings change and mature with age.

A capacity of 35 liters puts this among the largest bags you'll find. And it makes sense—true to its name, the Wearable Carry 35L offers the roominess of a travel carry bag.
This cylindrical bag features a full-length zipper that opens along both sides. Unzip it all the way, and it opens up like a suitcase, revealing storage space on each side. One side offers plenty of vertical space, with a mesh pocket attached to its inner wall. The other side is divided into two tiers—a shallow upper section sits above the main lower compartment. As you can see, the capacity is enormous. Since the interior is fully lined, you can neatly pack important clothing items together, while also sorting smaller items into individual pockets.
True to its appearance, the storage capacity is impressive, so even those traveling light can carry it with confidence.
Even on a day trip, some people would rather bring everything they need than waste money buying something they're missing—if that sounds like you, a bag of this size should give you peace of mind.
This backpack, which holds roughly 19 liters, is just the right size for a woman's back. Open up the large drawstring-style opening and you're greeted with gray interior fabric, which makes it easy to see what's inside. Inside, there are two pockets handy for storing small items, a divider that fits an A4 file or PC, and a zippered pocket for valuables like keys—plus a D-ring for attaching things like a pass case, all of which shows that its functionality is more than enough for a day trip. If you're someone who can't do without a tablet or PC for work, this kind of backpack is a great choice.
A backpack tends to lean casual by default, but this GITA backpack incorporates weighty buffalo leather into its details, hinting at the high design sensibility so characteristic of the Nordic brand SANDQVIST.
SANDQVIST is committed to sturdy construction, with the aim of creating products that are loved for the long haul as part of daily life. That toughness is evident in the fact that the pieces are made at a former military sewing factory, giving this backpack a reassuring sense that it's the one to choose if you want something you'll use for years to come.
This backpack uses an extremely thick, sturdy 18-ounce fabric. Its ability to stand upright on its own hints at just how resistant it is to wear, with a tightly woven, crisp feel to the material. The bottom gusset also has plenty of depth, so it can easily hold a cosmetics pouch when traveling, or a bento box and other bulky items for everyday use. For families with children, it's reassuring to know you can fit small kids' items in as well.
ー ー ー ー ー ー ー ー
This STIG backpack is one of SANDQVIST's classic, popular models, with a simple design and Nordic-style color combinations that perfectly suit a fun travel mood. It's made from an organic cotton and polyester blend, engineered to resist stains and hold up better than plain cotton canvas.
What stands out is the flap with its leather belt. The leather belt has a wonderfully simple design—you just slip it into the leather fastener at the center—yet the flap closes securely, so you can feel at ease even when traveling and opening and closing your bag frequently. The opening is drawstring-style with a thick cord, so you can spread it wide open with both hands and see every corner of the bag's contents, making it an ideal backpack for days when you're carrying a lot of things.
This one also comfortably fits a 13-inch laptop. It can hold most everyday items like a water bottle or a folding umbrella, making it a versatile backpack that works well not only for day trips but also for commuting and going to school.
When carrying a lot of belongings, capacity and storage organization are naturally what matter most. Using pouches or compression bags is one way to keep things organized, but having plenty of pockets has its own advantages—it's easier to remember where you put things, and tidying up after you get home goes more smoothly too.
This is a STANDARD SUPPLY bag that can be carried two ways—as a shoulder bag or a tote. The gusset is large enough to fit a full change of clothes, giving it more capacity than it appears to have, and it's fitted with plenty of pockets for added functionality. On the front is an organizer pocket for keys and a phone, and inside the zippered pocket are two dividers plus a key hook, letting you keep small items like a smartphone or lip balm neatly organized. The interior has a divider sized for A4 documents or a laptop, along with a pocket handy for storing a bottle or folding umbrella that might otherwise tip over inside the bag. On the exterior, one side has a pocket for a water bottle or similar item, while the other side has a Velcro-closed pocket for important things like your phone or a transit/IC card.
A 10mm-thick urethane pad is inserted, with tape run through the interior as well, making the construction gentle on the shoulder. When worn as a shoulder bag, you can feel a soft cushioning and stability, so even heavy loads are no problem. For a bag meant to hold plenty of belongings, these thoughtful design details make all the difference in usability.
The generous capacity combined with a simple design suitable for both travel and everyday use is quintessentially STANDARD SUPPLY, making this a bag that proves useful in many situations once you own it. The opening can also be closed with a zipper, so there's no worry about items spilling out, and you can safely leave it in a locker with peace of mind.
For a multi-night trip where you want to bring a lot, people tend to reach for a carry case, but if you're traveling mostly by car, a carry case can turn out to be surprisingly inconvenient. First, since a carry case can't change its size, where you can place it in the car is limited—you also need to take extra steps to keep it from rattling around unless it's properly secured. Second, there's the matter of loading and unloading: carry cases often have small handles, which many women find difficult to lift when the luggage is heavy.
So, to solve both of these problems, we chose a large tote bag instead.
Among tote bags, this one from 6SHiKi (Rokushiki) stands out for its especially generous capacity. When loading a tote bag into a car, you can lift it in with one hand even if it's a bit heavy, and since canvas material can flex and change shape, it fits into any available space. Inside the car, even if a bit of your clothing peeks out, you can simply cover it with a cloth, so it shouldn't be a major issue.
The characters for "sail cloth" are read as "hanpu" (canvas). Since it was once used mainly as an industrial, practical material—for truck tarps, railway freight sheets, and the like—its tough, slightly rugged character may be exactly why people have come to love it. Bags made from this canvas have become a fashion staple, and you now see them everywhere on the street, but a canvas bag that feels both fresh and timeless, one that settles naturally into an adult's daily life, is surprisingly hard to find.
This tote bag series gives off a distinctive worn-in coolness when carried by an adult, and its reassuringly generous size—large enough to hold just about anything—makes it a great choice for trips of two nights or more. It has a firm stiffness when new, but as you use it, it softens and becomes more comfortable, which is part of the pleasure of owning it over time; the scuffs that appear on the leather will become memories of your travels.
ー ー ー ー ー ー ー ー
For those who want to pack in as much as a carry-on case but still keep both hands free, a backpack like this is a great choice. It resembles a "wearable carry", but the CARRY-ON PACK from STANDARD SUPPLY leans even closer to the look and feel of an actual carry-on case.
There's also a space on the outside just large enough to fit an A4 file, along with additional pockets, so it excels at organizing small items too. Its clean, simple design is a functional backpack that helps you instantly recall what you put where.
Unlike a hard-shell carry-on case, it's constructed with just the right amount of give to expand moderately, so you can pack slightly bulky items without worry—a reassuring feature for trips where your luggage tends to grow.
The section that rests against your back is also fitted with a thick cushion to reduce the strain of carrying, so it's designed to be less tiring even on long journeys. The handle that lets you carry it horizontally, making it easy to lift on and off luggage racks on trains or in overhead bins, is another thoughtful touch designed with a variety of situations in mind.
When you spend mornings and evenings somewhere other than home, you need the everyday items you use in daily life. The quantity of consumables may go up or down, but the variety of daily necessities you need doesn't really decrease. As a result, travel preparation means dealing with a large number of small items, and making the effort to keep everything as light and compact as possible so it all fits into your travel bag.
One useful strategy here is to choose packable items.
A backpack that folds down small enough to hold in one hand makes an excellent sub-bag. Tuck it into your main bag, and you can bring home any extra items you pick up along the way without worry.
This tote bag also folds down small enough to carry in one hand. It's designed to sit on top of a carry-on case, making it a great choice for anyone who frequently uses one.
On trips with a lot of time spent in transit, there are many moments when you'll wish you had a pillow. A large pillow is a hassle to carry, but a packable neck pillow solves that worry.
If you want to bring along a change of shoes—say, sneakers to swap for something smarter—packing them in a shoe case means you don't have to worry about dirtying whatever bag you put them in.
Choose from the TRAVEL SHOES Series
Chausser's Travel Shoes series all arrive packaged in a drawstring pouch. True to their name as "shoes for travel," they're just as suited to comfortable walking as they are to being your companion on the road.
Gurkha Heel Sandal TR-021 BLACK
A rare sandal-type shoe within the TRAVEL SHOES series. The heel, at a comfortable 4cm height, curves gracefully for an elegant, feminine look. The leather is also water-resistant treated, and paired with a highly grippy Vibram sole that resists slipping even on rainy days, so despite being a leather material that usually dislikes water, it can be worn in almost any time or place. It's an appealing pair you can wear worry-free not only on rainy days but also near water, at the beach or riverside.
TRAVEL SHOES Ankle Boot Rain TR-012 BL
An easy-to-slip-on-and-off style. At first glance it looks like a plain shoe, but the cut of the opening is refined and gives it the kind of dignity you'd expect from a proper leather shoe. A heel that isn't too high is actually less tiring than a flat sole, and having even a little bit of height gives you more peace of mind underfoot on rainy days.
This pouch works well as a cosmetics case, for storing a change of underwear, or for gathering shampoo and other items together. Keeping everything in one place makes showering and getting ready easier, and it also makes tidying up simple since you'll know exactly where everything is. Highly recommended.
With its cushioning and microfiber cloth lining, this pouch is reassuring for storing precision devices like chargers, earphones and other gadgets.
This pouch has pockets so you can organize cables and other gadgets by type. It can also hold cosmetics, socks and more—a versatile pouch that adapts to however you choose to use it.
Traveling with family, friends or a partner is always enjoyable, whoever you go with. To make your journeys as light and comfortable as possible, it's worth investing in a new favorite bag that you'll use again and again. Everyone has different priorities when it comes to a travel bag—material durability, storage capacity and so on—but design preference matters most of all. We hope you find something you'll love using for years to come.
