Staff Shopping Report: Are stains and see-through fabric a concern? A year of wearing SETTO's specially ordered white jeans.

This shopping column features staff members enthusiastically introducing items they've purchased with their own money and used daily.

Today's purchase: We asked SETTO to make a specially ordered color of their [Special Order] CTX-010L 12oz Selvedge Straight Jeans in White.

I like clothes that are simple but have a point of interest somewhere. I dislike anything constricting, and my motto is to look put-together while dressed as comfortably as possible. I rarely choose clothing in bold colors or patterns, tending to settle into safe, muted tones, but I do enjoy pairing outfits with accessories.

I used to think white bottoms were hard to wear.

What made you decide to purchase these selvedge straight jeans in white?

"Before buying these specially ordered white jeans, I never reached for white bottoms because I was worried about stains showing, or my underwear or legs showing through the fabric. I even felt that way especially about white jeans. I think a lot of people rule out white pants for those same reasons."

"But when I tried on a sample of the specially ordered pair, I checked the 'see-through issue' I was worried about, and it turned out to be fine. The 12oz denim wasn't thin enough to be a concern for see-through. In other words, if you want to wear white pants, jeans might be a good way to try it."

We placed pieces of white, beige, black, and red fabric against the hip area of the specially ordered white jeans.
Even with dark colors like black and red, they weren't noticeably visible through the fabric—you had to look closely to make out the color at all. Light blue and pink were also no problem, so there's almost no need to worry about your underwear showing through. (Similarly, your legs won't show through either!)

It sounds like the see-through issue isn't much to worry about after all. What about the other concern—stains?

"As for stains, I haven't spilled soy sauce or ketchup or anything like that so far, so there haven't been any major stains, and I don't worry too much even on rainy days. It's been a year since I started wearing them, and when I look closely now, the only visible marks are some small mud splatters around the hem. Of course I've been washing them, but there's a bit that doesn't come out completely just from that..."

When we pre-washed the stained area before putting it in the washing machine, it came out clean. Compared to darker colors like indigo jeans, checking a little more carefully during laundry might be the key to keeping them looking fresh for a long time.

White suits spring and summer.

It sounds like you've come to really appreciate these jeans despite your initial concerns. How often do you wear them?

"This time of year, I wear them about twice a week! They really suit the fresh feeling of spring and summer, so I reach for them often. I also have indigo jeans in exactly the same cut, but right now I'm definitely in the mood for white."

"Indigo denim is a wardrobe staple, so you can wear it with confidence, but depending on the top you pair it with, it can be tricky to style in a fashionable way. Just switching to white instantly makes it look sharper, and I feel like it really makes accessories and small items stand out more."

Do you have a favorite way to style them?

"This applies to both the white and indigo versions of this jeans series, but I like folding the hem slightly and tucking my top into the pants for a bit of a high-waisted look—it's really nice. I'm 159cm tall and wear size S, and when I fold the hem up about 5cm, you get a peek of socks between my shoes and the jeans, which I also like. Once summer comes, I show my ankles and pair them with flat sandals. You can really wear these any time except the height of summer."

「あと、ワンピースの下に穿くのも良いですよ。レギンスってどうしても黒やグレーなどの暗い色になりがちではないですか？レギンスでホワイトを選ぶのは結構勇気がいりますが、ジーンズになると違和感なく自然に足元にホワイトを持ってこられて、明るい雰囲気を出せると思っています。」 Translation: "Also, they're great to wear under a dress. With leggings, don't you tend to end up choosing dark colors like black or gray? Picking white leggings takes a fair amount of courage, but with jeans, you can naturally bring white into your look without it feeling out of place, and I think it gives off a bright, cheerful vibe."

【If you're choosing, go with S】

The waist and hip area fit snugly, but there's still room around the legs, so it's easy to move in and comfortable to wear. It sits somewhere between skinny jeans and loose wide-leg pants, giving both ease of movement and a balanced silhouette that really suits my body type. My legs look straight and neat, and I love how the high waist creates an elongated, vertical line. You can wear it at full length, but I've deliberately given it a slight roll-up.

【If you're choosing, go with M】

There's a pleasant, close fit around the hips and waist, while the thighs and calves have some room to spare, so it doesn't cling too closely to the lines of your legs and instead falls straight down, making your legs look neat and clean from top to bottom. The waist is on the tighter side, so tucking in a top gives a cinched, streamlined look. (It's difficult to tuck in thicker items like sweaters.) The length is just right at full length, and if you want to show off your ankles, a small roll-up works well. If you sit often or prefer a more relaxed fit, I'd recommend going up one size from what you'd normally choose.
