There are many ways to knit a sweater, but one of the biggest factors shaping its overall look is "gauge." Gauge is a unit that expresses the density of a knitting machine's needles—specifically, how many needles are packed into one inch (2.54 cm). The higher the gauge number, the more stitches fit into the same length of fabric, resulting in a finer, more tightly knit texture. Chunky knits made with thick yarn and a loose weave are called low gauge (5 gauge or below), 7, 8, and 10 gauge are considered middle gauge, and 12 gauge and above is called high gauge.

Founded in 1968, aran woollen mills is Ireland's oldest and most renowned knitwear maker, using high-quality 100% merino wool. Being machine-made allows them to offer their aran sweaters (fisherman's sweaters), known for excellent water resistance and warmth, at a relatively affordable price. Because the technique is based on skills cultivated over a long history, the machine-made results lose nothing in quality—one of the reasons for their popularity.

A silhouette with just the right amount of fit

While many low-gauge knits tend to be loose-fitting, the Merino Wool Cable Sweater is characterized by a snugly fitted neckline and a silhouette that fits the body comfortably without being oversized. It never feels too loose, making it an easy piece to wear at any age.

Lightweight

YONETOMI NEW BASIC is made by a knitwear factory in Yamagata Prefecture. From material development to product design and mass production, everything is handled in-house at their own factory in Yamabe-machi. Whenever they hear of a new material, they're quick to adopt it, actively striving to create new products. With a total of 43 fully automatic flat knitting machines, they boast a production system specializing in low-gauge knits that is the largest in Japan and among the top in the world.

A sheen that suits a scarf too

Rather than a single thick yarn, several fine-gauge threads—like those used in high-gauge knits—are twisted together, giving the fabric a silk-like sheen. This makes it a great match for silk scarves. Many people give up on scarves because they can't decide how to tie them, but simply letting a peek of scarf show from beneath the sweater is an easy way for anyone to enjoy incorporating one into their outfit.

Minimal itchiness

Extra-fine 19.5-micron Italian wool is generously and densely knit at a middle gauge. Additionally, rather than a single thick yarn, several fine-gauge threads—like those used in high-gauge knits—are twisted together, creating a moist, cashmere-like texture that's smooth to the touch and free of itchiness. It holds its shape well and can be hand-washed at home.

With knits, thicker yarn is generally considered higher quality, trapping more air and providing more warmth—but this sweater is knitted more densely than typical knits, so even with finer-spun yarn, it offers excellent warmth retention. Fully fashioned refers to the labor-intensive method—much like hand-knitting—of increasing and decreasing the stitch count according to a pattern to shape the body and sleeves, then joining them together.
