A life transformed by a small flower vase. A touch of green in daily life brightens both the space and the heart

I've always admired the idea of living with greenery in my room.

In the area where I live, where the four seasons are easy to feel, contact with nature is part of everyday life.

Green spreads outside my window at all times, yet even as I longed to stop by a stylish flower shop in town to choose flowers, I felt it was a little difficult to keep flowers in a vase as part of my daily routine.

Still, admiring people whose rooms show real sense in how they choose flowers and vases, I thought I'd like to try imitating them someday, and this spring I finally picked up a vase.

◆Choosing a flower vase to decorate the kitchen

Late March.

I started by bringing familiar wildflowers into my room.

I picked rapeseed flowers blooming around the house and arranged them. A single-flower vase can hold anything, and it's wonderfully carefree. Whether it's a flower found blooming along the roadside during a picnic or a walk on a sunny day, letting you savor the memory, or a small branch whose shape you simply liked, it lends a refined atmosphere to whatever you place in it.

Because the KAHLER vase is so small, it doesn't really matter what you put in it. Even leaves instead of flowers look lovely, and in autumn, say, even foxtail grass would surely look charming.

These days there are flower subscription services and the like, so it's convenient that even without flowers or a flower shop nearby, it's become easier to display greenery at home.

Having a bit of green in the scene every morning as I cook gives a lovely sense of freshness. And another nice thing about keeping it in the kitchen is that I can change the water right there on the spot.

While washing dishes, I can quickly rinse out the vase and refill it with clean water, so the flowers last longer. At the same time, having flowers around has also raised my awareness of keeping the sink area tidy. Thinking of it as something I do for the sake of a single flower, I've noticed my willingness to try a little more—whether it's cleaning the kitchen or rethinking the interior—has broadened.

What's more, as I actually went about caring for it, I happily discovered that "this vase might be lovely even without any flowers in it."

Its rounded shape blends beautifully into a room's interior, almost like a piece of Nordic design. It also looks charming lined up neatly beside a bookshelf. Although it's a small, palm-sized item, I realized it has a real presence in bringing a change to an interior.

It comes as a set of three, but of course you don't need to display all three together. I'd also recommend taking advantage of its small size to place one in the bathroom or by a window.

Recently, wanting to have flowers to put in this vase, I started growing craspedia. Arranging seasonal flowers in a small vase let me enjoy the changing seasons, and finding flowers on walks and growing them myself became a pleasure too. I've come to enjoy walking down streets I've never taken before, and I even find myself spotting horsetail shoots that you'd miss unless you looked closely—my life feels richer than it used to.

What began as a life with greenery, sparked by a single small flower in the kitchen, now feels, looking back, like the first step toward reconsidering a healthier way of living.
