Fashion Meets Housework♩ A Housewives' Roundtable: What We Really Want — The woof Apron Edition

The apron, a popular choice for Mother's Day gifts.

An apron is a practical tool that keeps your favorite clothes from getting accidentally wet or stained while you tackle the day's housework, but it's also a piece of clothing that lifts your motivation for getting things done.

Cooking, laundry, cleaning, taking out the trash—when these daily, repetitive chores start to feel like a bit of a drag, you need something to flip the switch toward a more positive mindset. For me, that something is an "apron." I've heard from many people besides myself that tying the apron strings gives them an instant boost of motivation—it seems this feeling is more common than you'd think.

At ZUTTO, there are women who work as housewives at home and, here, as careful, dedicated packing staff. Among these housewives who love crafts and fashion, one apron brand became the talk of the office, with everyone saying, "This is really good."

That brand is woof, a Japanese apron brand that newly joined ZUTTO's lineup this year.

What Is a woof Apron?

・A Japanese Brand Made from the Wearer's Perspective

A Housewives' Roundtable

・Three Things Each of Us Loves About woof Aprons

woof, Made from the Wearer's Perspective

woof is a brand that continues to craft aprons at a small factory in Tokyo, Japan. Valuing manufacturing from the perspective of everyday apron wearers, the brand handles everything in-house—from planning and pattern-making to the selection of sewing specifications—resulting in aprons crafted with meticulous attention down to the smallest conveniences.

woof's attention to detail in apron-making is truly thorough, addressing questions such as:

・How does it hold up to repeated washing?

・Do stains actually come out properly?

・Does it restrict movement?

These are the kinds of small-to-large concerns that arise from actually wearing an apron day to day, and woof has layered in thoughtful solutions for each one. woof aprons aren't just stylish and cute—they let you feel that distinctly Japanese sense of careful consideration in every detail.

At ZUTTO, we carry three designs, and another defining feature of woof is that the fabric, pattern, and stitching are all varied by design, resulting in aprons tailored to fit the feel and needs of whoever wears them.

For example, among the three types ZUTTO carries, RINTO was created with the concept of "a lovely apron you can wear even when you step out."

Aprons are worn not just at home but on all kinds of occasions—neighborhood events, school functions, parties—wherever you need to protect your clothes from stains. But if the apron stands out too much against your everyday outfit, it can be hard to feel comfortable wearing it outside. RINTO was designed with exactly this kind of casual neighborhood interaction in mind, so you can step out wearing it with confidence.

To create an apron with a distinctly Japanese sensibility—one that might spark compliments like "That's such a lovely apron"—special care was given to the tucks at the waist and the large ribbon.

So that the apron pairs well with everyday fashion, the waist is finished with tucks for a dress-like silhouette. To create clean, beautiful tucks, the fabric at the chest is doubled up—and this doubling has the added benefit of making the chest area look neat and tidy while also preventing the sagging and shifting of fabric that aprons often suffer from.

It doesn't get in the way even when you move your arms, so it's easy to wear, and the design is highly satisfying both in appearance and function—you can really feel the thoughtful ingenuity unique to woof.

<The Philosophy Behind woof>

woof's wish is to make "aprons that enrich everyday life." Comparing the fabric of daily life to warp threads, the brand's name—woof, the English word for weft thread—carries the meaning of completing everyday life by weaving it in.

<Delivered in a Linen Bag>

woof treats even the materials used for its aprons with genuine care and affection. Materials that would otherwise be discarded are remade into linen bags, in which your apron is carefully delivered.

Each apron is made with the wearer in mind, making it a perfect gift for someone special. The linen bag can also be used to store the apron, or as a matching pouch alongside it.

We Asked Housewives to Pick Their Favorites

ZUTTO carries three woof designs, and we asked three women—each a self-proclaimed "apron pro" who juggles work, housework, and childcare with enthusiasm—to discuss and choose their favorites from a housewife's point of view.

・ATEIL…A basic type that's easy to wear without tying.
・WAKU…A tough type also recommended for outdoor use.

・RINTO…a style focused on design that enhances your sense of fashion.

Each has its own merits, but what kind of perspective goes into choosing colors and designs? We interviewed our staff from a woman's viewpoint and a mom's viewpoint about which apron is best.

Staff members spread out the woof aprons on the table and each picked out the ones that caught their eye.

"They're all so cute. Do you actually use pockets? I'm pretty particular about pockets."

"ATEIL has 4 pockets."

"When there are lots of pockets, you can separate different things into them, which might be great for cleaning."

"Exactly! It might be great for cleaning. I want to keep cleaning wipes, cloths, and rubber gloves separate from my phone, which I don't want to get dirty. With 4 pockets, you can separate things by category and fit a lot of tools in too—that's nice."

"Having small separate pockets seems handy for childcare too. When you can't take your eyes off your kids, tissues, trash, toys, and things tend to end up scattered everywhere, but if you just tuck them into a pocket for the time being, it's much easier to tidy up properly later."

▲The 4 pockets might also be great for raising children—a mother's unique perspective. Even when you want to throw something away but can't take your eyes off your child, or when picking up toys like toy cars is difficult to do right away, you can quickly tuck them into a pocket, which really helps with childcare.

"It's also great for when you need to step out briefly, like taking out the trash or attending a neighborhood association meeting—you can put your keys, a ballpoint pen, and a memo pad in there. I once put my keys and phone in the same pocket and my phone got scratched, so ever since then I've made sure not to put them together."

"I totally get that. With this, you can keep them separate, and it's also great for neighborhood association activities—you could put in work gloves and keys."

"Also, since I have sloping shoulders, the shoulder straps tend to slip down while I'm doing housework, which has been a bit of a concern for me.  ATEIL has shoulder straps that wide, so it seems like they wouldn't slip off. Plus, you just pull it over your head, so it's easy."

"That's true. Housework involves a lot of raising and lowering your arms, and bending over, doesn't it? But  RINTO also has a neck strap type, so there's no worry about it slipping down—when it comes to resistance to slipping, this one might be good too. It even has a ribbon at the back of the neck, which is cute."

"You're right! And the neck strap ribbon can be worn already tied!"

"That's reassuring even for lazy people like me. (laughs)"

▲ RINTO also features an adjustable neck strap, so it can fit any body type or height. Even petite people can adjust it for a perfect fit. This ribbon can be put on and taken off while still tied.

" RINTO comes in more than just solid colors—there are various patterns too. Which design does everyone like?"

"That's a tough one. None of them are flashy, and they all look stylish, so I'd want to bring one to cooking class. If I were choosing for myself, I think I'd like the stripe pattern. But if I received any of them as a gift, I'd be happy either way."

▲Being able to choose from 5 colors and patterns is also one of the nice things about RINTO. The calm, understated colors won't clash with your outfit.

"Then how about  WAKU ? I think this one might have the most interesting feature."

"That's right. When I first opened the bag, I saw a short cord attached and thought, 'What's this for?' Then, when I spread out the apron, I realized it could be worn two ways—either tying it with a waist strap or just pulling it over your head—and that made sense to me."

"There aren't many aprons that can be worn two different ways like that."

▲Some staff members were impressed by how WAKU can be worn two different ways.

"Also, this one has a design that's easy for men to use too. My husband sometimes does housework, so it might be nice to use it together."

"True, at our house we often handle paint and oil for DIY projects and car hobbies, so it might be nice to have one shared by the whole family for cleaning or messy tasks."

" WAKU does have a sturdy fabric. Come to think of it, the thickness and texture of the fabric are different for each design, aren't they?"

"You're right!"

▲The thickness and density of the thread differs by design.

In particular, both WAKU and RINTO use thread of the same thinness (40 count), but WAKU is woven tightly at a higher density, while RINTO is woven more loosely and softly, so the texture is a bit different between the two.

Thanks to this, each design's characteristics come through clearly: WAKU becomes an apron that can withstand tough use, while RINTO becomes an apron with a soft, beautifully draping feel.

And here's what each staff member chose.

We also asked them about their favorite points.

"I chose  ATEIL.

When I'm cleaning, I put cloths, gloves, and tools in my pockets, but with only two pockets, everything gets jumbled up inside. Up until now, I've kept my phone out of my pockets because it would get dirty, which meant I sometimes didn't notice urgent message notifications while cleaning. If I could have an apron with divided pockets that also fit my phone, my daily life would feel even richer."

"I chose the RINTO stripe design.

It feels like it could boost your feminine charm—you can wear it as part of your outfit, and it makes life and housework at home feel more enjoyable. Especially with the stripes, when you actually put it on, they make your body look slender, which is nice. Of course it's great that linen is easy to wash and stains come out easily, but even if a stain doesn't fully disappear, this pattern seems like the kind that would just turn into character over time."

"I chose the WAKU design.

On weekends, my hobby is enjoying outdoor activities like camping with my kids, but I always worried about my clothes getting dirty in unexpected moments, even though I still wanted to look stylish. There are also slits at the hem, which make all kinds of tasks easier, and I thought this apron would let me enjoy my hobbies even more—that's why I chose WAKU. It's also unisex, so the design can be worn in a feminine way or a more masculine way, which means you don't have to worry about matching it to a particular style."

"With WAKU, I noticed the waist ties are attached at an angle so they can also be tied in front, and right there is the woof logo. It's not just about careful sewing—it really is the small details. Even the tiny points that might get skipped if you were just mass-producing something are properly done, and it makes me admire how well they understand us apron users."

Hearing the various perspectives and opinions from professionals in housework and childcare on choosing an apron was really informative. We've also introduced woof's approach to choosing an apron in more detail here, so please feel free to use it as a reference.
