A fragrance to wear before bed. Relax with a scent that rises gently from your skin.

The humid, sweat-inducing season is also a time when appetite tends to drop from the heat, and fatigue builds up easily due to temperature differences and the strain air conditioning puts on the body. What matters most for shaking off this kind of everyday fatigue is, of course, sleep.

That said, many people probably feel this way during this season: "I should be sleeping soundly, but I still don't feel rested..." The reason may be that the quality of your sleep has declined.

Have you heard of "night perfume" as a way to improve sleep quality? It's a sleep habit that lets you settle into rest with a gentle, comforting scent close by.

1/Three benefits of night perfume

"Night perfume," as the name suggests, refers to perfume applied before going to sleep. We'd like to recommend "night perfume"—wearing a scent you love as you drift off—because it offers three key benefits.

1. It improves the quality of your sleep

Soothing your mind and body with a scent you love helps improve the quality of your sleep.

2. You can relax with a scent you truly love

Unlike the fragrance you wear when going out, this scent is enjoyed only in your own private space, so you can choose whatever scent you love without worrying about occasion or setting.

3. Applying perfume at night leaves a faint scent in the morning

You get to wake up surrounded by your favorite scent in the morning, too. Also, for those who find that perfume feels too strong when applied in the morning, applying it at night instead leaves only a subtle trace of scent by morning.

2/A light eau de cologne is recommended

Perfumes are classified into four types based on how long they last, which depends on the concentration of fragrance oils dissolved in alcohol—known as the fragrance concentration. Even perfumes with the same name can be divided into eau de parfum, eau de toilette, and eau de cologne depending on this concentration, and the way the scent unfolds changes accordingly.

In the diagram below, fragrance concentration increases as you move from top to bottom. However, a scent that's too strong or lasts too long can actually stimulate the brain and make it harder to fall asleep, so for night perfume, a light eau de cologne is recommended. With a concentration of 2 to 5% and a duration of just 1 to 2 hours, it won't interfere with your sleep even if applied right before bed.

3/Staff review: "I tried night perfume for a week"

I tend to lose sleep by getting absorbed in my favorite dramas and hobbies.

I'd always felt a bit uneasy about fragrance, but when I heard that night perfume could improve sleep quality, I chose CLAUSPORTO's Eau de Cologne Travel Spray 10ml as my very first perfume.

I was drawn to its convenient size and stylish look. The scents range from No.1 VETIVER to No.6 FLORES, each with a stylish package featuring the number stamped in gold foil.

CLAUSPORTO creates fragrances inspired by the scents and scenery of Portugal. Developed by Lyn Harris, a world-renowned perfumer at the forefront of the fragrance industry, the brand offers a special olfactory experience crafted from carefully selected ingredients.

The 10ml size is perfectly compact for traveling. Many people worry about whether they'll sleep well in an unfamiliar place or how the room might smell, but this small bottle seems handy for travel and puts those sleep concerns to rest.

These are fragrances born from a deep respect for natural scents, crafted through the brand's tireless curiosity as they traveled the world. Scent is said to work on memory, bringing back happy and joyful moments—
and CLAUSPORTO's eau de cologne, used as a night perfume, seems likely to bring on pleasant dreams.

For this week-long review, I rated each scent on a five-star scale from the perspective of a perfume beginner, factoring in ease of use as well. Let me share my personal favorites through these star ratings. I'll report on my experience over the week, choosing a scent at random each day depending on my mood.

Out of the six scents, the one I chose on day one was No.5 PORTO. I just had a feeling it would smell wonderful.

I tried it right away. On the first day, I applied it to my neck and waist. Lying on my back, the scent drifted up gently. Lying on my stomach, it came through even more strongly.

On its own, I thought the perfume might smell quite strong, but once applied, it turned out to be a gentle scent—wonderful. It felt like a musk base with a subtle softness woven through. Right from day one, I could feel the benefits of night perfume, and I fell asleep faster than usual. I also loved that a faint scent still lingered around my neck when I woke up in the morning.

A high rating right off the bat! It made me look forward to the next day.

No.5 PORTO

TOP: bergamot, lemon, grapefruit, citronella
MIDDLE: galbanum, elemi extract
LAST: sea moss, juniper, amber, musk

Scent impression: a citrus note evoking the salt air of the sea

My personal rating: "★★★★"

A fragrance's scent is divided into three stages as it changes over time. The scent right after application is the top note (TOP), the scent that emerges a little while later is the middle note (MIDDLE), and the scent felt last, until it fades away, is the last note (LAST). I continued on, looking forward to a good night's sleep while enjoying these changes in scent along the way.

On day two, I chose No.4 CLEMENTINE. Since it was a hot day, I wanted to feel refreshed with a citrus scent, so that's what I picked.

Just like the previous day, I applied it to my neck and waist before going to sleep.

The moment I applied it, a light, refreshing scent spread around me, but before long that scent softened into something calm, almost musk-like, and my impression the next morning was that it had helped me fall asleep easily.

What I somehow came to understand on day two was that it's better to choose a sleep perfume based on its MIDDLE or LAST note rather than its top note. I also felt that applying it about an hour before bed was a good idea.

No.4 CLEMENTINE, personally speaking, might have a top note that's a bit too refreshing for a sleep perfume, so I gave it a slightly strict rating of "★★★" — three stars.

No.4 CLEMENTINE

TOP: bergamot, lemon, grapefruit, mandarin peel
MIDDLE: lavender, orange blossom
LAST: musk

Scent impression: An invigorating scent that refreshes the mood

My personal rating: "★★★"

Since I'd chosen a refreshing scent the day before, I wanted a change and picked No.3 FOUGERE, which blends together calmer notes.

When I applied it not only to my neck and waist but also to my ankles, the calm, woody scent wrapped around my whole body and made it easy to fall asleep. It was also nice to wake up to a softly gentle scent. It has a slightly distinctive character, but I felt it was a scent that lets you sleep peacefully and soundly.

This one gets a perfect "★★★★★" — five stars. By day three, I'd found my favorite. From this day on, I found myself being drawn more and more into the appeal of sleep perfume.

No.3 FOUGERE

TOP: pine needle, galbanum, geranium
MIDDLE: jasmine, pepper
LAST: sea moss, cedarwood, frankincense

Scent impression: A quiet, calming scent where sea breeze and wood notes are skillfully blended together

My personal rating: "★★★★★"

My search for a favorite scent continues. On day four, I tried No.1 VETIVER, which contains lavender, the classic go-to for sleep aromas.

I applied it to my neck, waist, and the back of my hands. While researching the day before, I learned that a scent spreads more when applied to the back of the hand rather than the wrist, so I decided to try it there right away. I could really feel the lavender scent spreading softly. I thought the top note seemed a bit too sweet and wondered if it might not be for me, but when I actually tried it, it turned out to smell wonderful. I gave it "★★★★" — four stars.

By day four, I had a deeper appreciation for how to enjoy the scent. Having continued using it, I began to understand my own preferences better, and I felt that the Eau de Cologne Travel Spray, 10ml, in its easy-to-handle size, was just the right amount for a fragrance beginner like me.

No.1 VETIVER

TOP: bergamot, lavender, galbanum
MIDDLE: Haitian vetiver, pine needle, eucalyptus
LAST: cedar, sea moss, amber

Scent impression: A refreshing summer scent. For those who love vetiver and ocean-like fragrances

My personal rating: "★★★★"

Sleep perfume had become a full-on habit for me by now. My hand almost reached for my favorite, No.3, again, but in the end I chose No.6 FLORES.

Just like the day before, I applied it to my neck, waist, and the back of my hands. Since sweet scents have never really been my thing to begin with, this one didn't seem to suit my preferences.

However, I was surprised at how easily I fell asleep anyway. It certainly fulfilled its role as a sleep perfume. "★★★" — three stars.

*The star ratings reflect my own personal preferences, meant as a reference for those new to fragrance.

No.6 FLORES

TOP: bergamot, lemon, mandarin
MIDDLE: water lily, orange blossom, jasmine, iris root
LAST:
vetiver, sandalwood, tonka bean, suede

Scent impression: A gorgeous, floral scent

My personal rating: "★★★"

The last of the six scents I tried was this one, No.2 GERANIUM.

Since I usually use rose-scented cosmetics, my expectations were high that this one would pair well with them.

I applied it to my neck, waist, and the back of my hands. "Yep, just as I thought" — I was pleased to find that the crisp, herbal scent, just as I'd predicted, went perfectly with the scent of the cosmetics I use every day. This was also the first day I tried applying it to my pillow. The scent spread around my face, and it made falling asleep even easier.

This one gets "★★★★" (4 stars). No.2 GERANIUM also earned high marks for pairing well with the cosmetics I use every day, which made it easy to fall asleep.

It was on this day that I realized choosing a scent isn't just about personal preference—it's also important to consider what kind of scented cosmetics and detergents you normally use.

No.2 GERANIUM

TOP: bergamot, lavender, angelica root
MIDDLE: geranium leaf, rose petal
LAST:
patchouli, vetiver, moss, tonka bean, musk

Scent impression: a rose-like elegance with a crisp, herbal edge

My personal rating: "★★★★"

Day 7. Having tried every scent, I decided to layer them in search of something new.

What I tried was No.1 VETIVER combined with No.3 FOUGERE. The sweetness of No.1 blended beautifully with No.3, creating a wonderful fragrance. Since the balance and where you apply it can change the effect, it seems like fun to arrange the combination depending on your mood that day. I'd also recommend pairing No.4 with No.6.

After completing this seven-day scent journey, I found myself thoroughly settled into the habit of falling asleep with a sleep perfume.

I used to feel a bit unsure about fragrances, but since then, wearing a sleep perfume has become part of my nightly routine, giving me a small pleasure to look forward to before bed each day. Waking up to a faint lingering scent is also pleasant, and I've been completely drawn in by the appeal of fragrance. I've even come to feel ready to try other perfumes.

The size is just right, and I'd love for beginners to fragrance to give the Eau de Cologne Travel Spray 10ml a try. You can enjoy layering scents too, so choosing different fragrances to combine is another fun option. Beyond being a handy travel companion for the sweaty season, it's also great as a sleep perfume to help improve your sleep in summer.

No.1 VETIVER ★★★★ a refreshing summer scent

No.2 GERANIUM  ★★★★ a scent of rose and herbs

No.3 FOUGERE ★★★★★ a quiet, calming scent

No.4 CLEMENTINE ★★★  an invigorating scent

No.5 PORTO ★★★★  a citrus scent

No.6 FLORES ★★★ a vibrant, floral scent

Sleep Perfume Extra: Filling Your Bedroom With Your Favorite Scent

If you'd like to fill your entire bedroom with fragrance, much like a room fragrance, it's also nice to scent your bedding, such as your pillow or bed cover. Every time you turn over in your sleep, your favorite scent spreads through the room, putting you in a good mood before you drift off.

If you want to enjoy the scent more strongly, apply it somewhere close to your face, like the pillow. If you'd rather enjoy just a hint of fragrance, try the foot of the bed cover instead. It's fun to adjust where you apply it on your bedding according to your preference.

Also, for those who say, "I'm a little hesitant about perfume, but I'd still like to enjoy a soft, gentle scent," a fragrant laundry detergent is a great recommendation. These days, many fabric softeners come with pleasant scents, but the one we're introducing here has the natural fragrance you'd expect from a Nordic brand, giving off a subtle scent from the moment you start washing through to the finished laundry.

▼STEAMERY's Laundry Detergent Gift Set

This set, which contains three bottles of the everyday clothing detergent, makes a great gift, but it's also a good way to try STEAMERY for the first time.

▼In addition to the gift set, there are six individual scents available depending on your preference or the type of laundry.

・DELICATE: rose and musk

・WHITE: vanilla and jasmine

・DARK DENIM: oud and wood

・ALL COLORS: myrrh and ylang-ylang

・HYPOALLERGENIC: unscented

・ODOR CONTROL: citrus and cedar

▼Laundry Liquid (Fabric Spray)

This FABRIC SPRAY carries a fresh rose and musk scent. It quickly and easily refreshes fabrics while leaving behind a gentle lingering fragrance. It also has the added benefit of softening fibers and reducing the static that can interfere with sleep.
