Using a belt the right way: from choosing the correct size to proper care

A belt tends to be thought of as a small accessory that pulls an outfit together.

Compared to tops, bottoms, shoes and bags, belts are often something of an afterthought. But do you know how to choose the right one, how to wear it, and how to store it properly? Since a belt isn't the kind of item you replace every season, let's take a closer look at the key points for using one carefully over the long term.

Let's take a look at the history of the belt

The word "belt" originates from the Latin word BALTEUS, which in Roman times referred to a strap worn to hold a sword. In other words, it originally served a clearly practical role as a "tool."

As class-based society developed in the Middle Ages, the belt is said to have functioned less as a decorative item and more as a way to display one's rank and authority. Only nobles wore shoulder belts, with silk sashes embroidered in gold thread and leather belts adorned with jewels, elaborately decorated. After the 17th century, as ordinary citizens also began wearing belts, they ceased to be a symbol of authority and instead came to be valued more for their "functionality."

And so today, the belt's role has become primarily a fashion element, used to help achieve the style one wants. Even within that fashion element, there's a perspective in which the belt isn't meant to stand out on its own, but rather to help clothing fit just right. People who give off a polished, put-together impression—those who take good care of their belongings and wear their clothes in a way that doesn't put unnecessary strain on them—seem to enjoy fashion with a perfect fit, and seem to make good use of their belts as well.

Tips for choosing the right size

With belts like this, many people probably own several to match different outfits.

But do you know your own belt size? For men who wear suits, there may be days when they skip a necktie for "cool biz," but they always wear a belt—so many men likely know their size well. Women, on the other hand, don't have such a rule to go by, so aren't you perhaps choosing "roughly" by feel? In the first place, how should one go about finding the right belt size?

A belt's length is measured from the base of the buckle pin to the middle hole. Belt holes usually come in an odd number, and it's said that if the middle hole fits perfectly, the leftover length of the belt will look nicely balanced.

As for size notation, for example with a "32-inch" belt, the length from the base of the buckle pin (the starting point) to the middle hole measures 32 inches (approximately 76 cm).

*Please note that some belts are labeled by their total length, so be sure to check before purchasing.

The most reliable way to check your size is to look at the belt you currently use. Measure the length from the base of the buckle pin to the hole you normally use, and then choose a belt whose size matches that measurement. Also, if you have a preference for wearing your belt at the waist or lower around the hips, be sure to factor that in when deciding. It's also a good idea to consider not only your current body shape but also how it might change in the future.

Enjoying belts by brand

Even though we simply call them "belts," they come in all kinds of shapes, colors, and materials. Each of the main brands carried by ZUTTO has its own distinct character, offering different ways to enjoy fashion through belts.

CI-VA ベルト CIOCCOLA

CI-VA Belt CIOCCOLA

CI-VA, a leather goods brand from Florence, Italy, is known for simple items free of unnecessary ornamentation, made to last a long time. The brand is particular about the leather it uses and is known for pieces that develop a beautiful patina over the years. Leather treated with vegetable tannin gradually reveals its own character and softens into a comfortable fit as time passes.

A single-piece leather belt often brings to mind something thick and rugged, but CI-VA's belts are on the thinner side, making them easy to wear every day without any fuss. Their simplicity feels like the definition of a classic, and the basic leather pairs beautifully with the understated shine of the buckle.

Belt Storage and Care

タイ&ベルトハンガー

Since a belt is worn in a curved position for long periods, once you take it off after use, it tends to curl and retain that shape. If you then roll it up further for storage, the curl may become permanent and never fully straighten out again.

Depending on the material, stress on the curled area can cause damage or cracking, so it's important not to let the belt develop a set curve.

After use, we recommend straightening out the curl by hand and hanging the belt on a dedicated hanger. Exposing it to air also helps remove moisture, so this is especially worth doing for leather, which doesn't do well with humidity.

As shown in the photo, for belts made from a single layer of leather, care for them with a brush and cream, just as you would with other leather goods. Areas prone to friction are more likely to develop scratches and become dry and brittle, so inspect them carefully. Be sure to use a colorless cream—colored cream can transfer onto clothing, so caution is needed.

ON TAB BELT UNDYED NATURAL

Even with the same leather material, mesh designs make it difficult to apply cream care. In that case, simply remove the dust and dirt trapped between the mesh weave. Gently brush it with a soft clothing brush.

Also, applying cream just to the area where the buckle usually fastens can help prevent deterioration in that spot.

For suede material, applying leather cream will cause stains. It's recommended to protect it with a waterproof spray, which also helps prevent stains.
