"Kurashiki canvas," born in Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture, accounts for about 70% of domestic canvas production in Japan. With a history spanning more than 140 years, this material has long been beloved for its durability and pleasing texture.
JOBU bags are made exclusively with this top-quality Kurashiki canvas, carefully crafted one by one by skilled artisans. This time, we're sharing genuine impressions from staff at Kurashiki Hanpu Co., Ltd., the manufacturer, based on their own everyday use, along with tips for making the bags last a long time.
At ZUTTO, we carry four types of JOBU bags, each suited to different everyday scenes. None of these bags rely on unnecessary decoration, and I find myself thinking their solid presence comes entirely down to the quality of the material and design—simple, yet each with its own distinct character.
【1】Backpack
Where's the outer pocket? It's there, neatly hidden away. This minimalist backpack, designed with attention to every detail, develops richer character the more you use it, gradually becoming part of your daily life.
(Approx. width 32 × height 42 × depth 12.5cm / 3 colors) 23,100 yen
The canvas handle is comfortable to grip, with a gentleness that extends right down to where it touches your hand. You can feel the maker's warmth, not just practicality. With a zippered top, it's perfect even for those who aren't great at staying organized. It also has a casual quality that lets it double as a tote bag. (Approx. height 25cm × width 32-38cm × depth 10cm / 2 colors) 16,500 yen
This square, tofu-shaped bag boasts excellent storage capacity, comfortably fitting A4-size documents and magazines. Depending on how you use it, you can also enjoy watching the fabric gradually mold itself to your own habits—a canvas shoulder bag full of character. (Approx. width 34 × depth 10 × height 30cm / 5 colors) 16,500 yen
For those who don't need room for A4-size items, this slightly smaller rectangle shape is a good fit. Even so, it has solid capacity, easily holding a water bottle and a folding umbrella. (Approx. width 36 × depth 10 × height 18cm / 2 colors) 14,300 yen
JOBU bags are made in Kurashiki, the home of Japanese canvas. This time, we asked staff members at Kurashiki Hanpu, the manufacturer, how they use their bags in daily life, what they love most about them, and their tips for making them last.
"I bought this bag for work. I liked how, being made of canvas, it strikes just the right balance—not too formal—so I often took it with me on visits to clients."
"I also like how easy the handle is to grip, and how soft it feels to the touch. The fabric thickness differs depending on the part, which makes it interesting to feel. The more I use it every day, the more it seems to mold itself to my hand."

"Even when I lean it against something, it stands upright firmly, and the handles don't go limp, so it's easy to take things out. It's quick and easy to pick up too, so heading out with it is smooth."
"What I like about JOBU is how skillfully they use both thick and thin fabric. The bottom, which needs support, uses a heavier No. 4 canvas, while the part that touches your body uses a lighter No. 11 canvas. That's why it feels sturdy while still being light enough that it doesn't hurt your shoulder or body."

The sides and bottom use thick No. 4 canvas, while the front and back panels that come into direct contact with the hands, along with the handles and inner pockets, use thinner No. 11 canvas. The distinctive texture that comes from fabric woven by hand by craftspeople on old-style shuttle looms is part of its appeal.

"Since the inner pocket has dividers, it's easy to keep small items like keys organized," she said. Looking inside, there are four inner pockets in total: one large, two medium, and two small. It really does eliminate the need for a separate pouch.
"On days when the weather looks uncertain, there's even enough room to fit a folding umbrella. Actually, the canvas itself repels a bit of rain too." Fabric bags might seem worrying on rainy days... but this puts those concerns to rest.
That said, she also mentioned that "if you only put in small, heavy items, both sides can sag and the shape may lose its form a little." This kind of honest feedback is helpful too.
Finally, we asked the staff how they care for their durable Kurashiki Hanpu bags on a daily basis, and their tips for enjoying the changes over time while keeping the bags in good shape for years to come.
Ms. A
"After using it on a rainy or humid day, I don't put it straight into the closet. I let it sit somewhere well-ventilated for a while to let the moisture escape."
Mr. B
"On rainy days I worry about color transfer and stains, so it's a good idea to spray on some water repellent beforehand."
Since it's something used every day, it's reassuring to know that a little bit of care can help the bag develop a lovely patina without ever looking worn out.
Both staff members also shared something in common: neither has ever washed their bag. "Even if it gets wet in the rain, just wiping it with a handkerchief is enough"—thanks to this quality of the canvas, it's a bag you can use without worry.
JOBU accepts repairs for its products whenever possible. When we asked about the kinds of repair requests they've received so far, they told us they've handled things like "loose stitching" and "scratches on the sides."
"We respond according to each customer's situation and wishes. In some cases, the bag can't be restored to its original condition, but we make sure to explain that clearly before proceeding." This is reassuring support for anyone who wants to keep using their bag with care for a long time.
JOBU bags are used in all kinds of everyday scenes—not just for casual outings, but also as work bags thanks to their crisp, tidy silhouette. Mothers with young children reportedly use them for park outings, packing diapers, a change of summer clothes, and drinks. They say having both hands free and the bag's light weight make it easy to use.
From formal work settings to childcare, one of the charms of JOBU bags is how naturally they fit into anyone's daily life.
