[Special Order] Unisex DOTSUME RIB Long Sleeve T-Shirt

Jackman is a Japanese brand that has continued making clothing by carefully attending to every step of the process—materials, knitting, sewing. That attitude comes through clearly in the DOTSUME RIB Long Sleeve T-Shirt we're introducing here. Born from the brand's popular "DOTSUME" series, this long-sleeve tee is a piece that lets you feel that same careful attention every time you wear it.

Right in between a long-sleeve tee and a sweatshirt

Its defining feature is the "just-right thickness" that comes from being a tightly knit jersey of about 11.5oz. This material, called "dotsume tenjiku" (tightly knit jersey), is knit using a rare suspended knitting machine, pushing the stitch density to its limit.

It has more presence than a typical long-sleeve tee, yet without the heaviness of a sweatshirt. Worn on its own, the fabric's natural firmness creates a subtle three-dimensional shape, giving it a silhouette quite different from a mere inner layer.

This thickness also expands the ways it can be worn. In colder months, layer a shirt underneath for a sweatshirt-like feel. In early spring or early autumn, wear it alone. Even though it's a cut-and-sew top, its role naturally shifts with the season.

The popular color "Rosin," and "Old Raspberry" for a touch of freshness

For this special order, we selected two colors that are easy to incorporate into everyday outfits.

Rosin is a color inspired by the powder of a baseball rosin bag.

It's a popular color also used in other items—a calm white with a slight gray tint that blends easily with any outfit. Because it's such a pale color, the dyeing has been carefully worked out so that stains don't stand out easily, which is another reason it can be worn with confidence as everyday clothing.

Old Raspberry is a color inspired by the raspberries that American baseball players eat during games for a quick energy boost.

It's a muted-tone pink, an exquisite color that avoids being overly cute. The color, originally available in the short-sleeve version, was made into this long-sleeve style so it can be worn across a longer season. It's also easy to use as an accent color, subtly broadening the range of your outfits.

Drape it over your shoulders as an accent color. It's a shade that instantly brightens up the area around your face.

The reassurance of working for any season

The change of seasons is a time when it's easy to be unsure of what to wear. Early spring is still a bit chilly, but you'd rather start putting away your winter clothes. This long-sleeve tee fills that gap just right.

Slowly knit on a tsuriami (suspended knitting machine)

The material is American cotton. It is knit slowly, taking time, on old-style tsuriami machines that have become extremely rare today. These are analog machines without automatic control, and compared to the sinker knitting machines that dominate the industry now, both the labor involved and the number of machines available are limited. Even so, Jackman continues to insist on tsuriami knitting because "evenly tightening the stitches" is an essential process for creating a material that can be worn for a long time.

Because the tsuriami machine knits without placing unnecessary strain on the thread, the resulting fabric comes out even and uniform. This produces a practical strength: the fabric resists losing its shape and stays true even after repeated washing. The firm texture and three-dimensional feel of the fabric are also born from this process.

A single knitting machine can produce only enough fabric for 30 T-shirts in a day. It's a method one might not choose if efficiency were the priority, and yet the fact that this production method is still upheld reflects the brand's honest, unwavering stance behind the material known as "dotsume tenjiku."

The craftsmanship behind sewing thick fabric

On top of that, thick fabric raises the difficulty of sewing. The rib sections in particular become even thicker, so the needle doesn't move smoothly, requiring careful, slow, and deliberate stitching.

Jackman's sewing is done at its own factory in Fukui. Finishing the seams so they don't feel bulky or uneven requires the skill of experienced craftspeople.

There is also a repair service available, which conveys the brand's wish for people to wear their garments for a long time.

A durable fabric made with long-term wear in mind, along with a thickness and shape that's easy to style in different ways. And behind it all, the sewing and production system that supports it. This is a piece that, worn again and again, gradually becomes a staple in your own wardrobe.
