This time we're picking up ZUTTO's specially-ordered "Waffle Short Sleeve" series. Made from a 100% cotton waffle fabric, these short sleeves are perfectly suited to the sweatier months of the year.
If seeing the phrase "kind to bare skin" made you think this might be an introduction to some body cream, please forgive us. This isn't a cosmetic item that works directly on your skin, but the "wearing comfort" that clothing provides your bare skin is an important key to spending summer comfortably. From early summer through the height of the season, we'll be sharing plenty about the appeal of this wear that can truly be called "kind to skin."
Waffle fabric, quite literally, refers to a cloth that looks like the "waffle" pastry, with its characteristic regular bumps and grooves on the surface. A pattern of square-shaped bumps is the most common type, and the way this knitted texture creates three-dimensional shadows gives it a distinctive design. Since it goes through a process of cutting and sewing together knitted fabric, it's classified as a cut-and-sew garment. The construction is the same as a flat-knit T-shirt or a classic striped cut-and-sew top, but the addition of that "waffle" identity to the fabric itself is what gives waffle cloth its three-dimensional nuance.
This fabric has recently gained wider recognition thanks to the popularity of garments categorized as "thermal cut-and-sew," which use waffle fabric. "Thermal" means "of heat, or heat-retaining." Its roots trace back to underwear developed for military and outdoor wear, meaning it was originally a garment pursuing "function" rather than "fashion." Besides waffle, thermal cut-and-sew garments sometimes use a fabric called honeycomb, and both share the common trait of having a textured, uneven surface. As for why function-focused thermal cut-and-sew garments came to adopt waffle fabric in the first place,
・The unevenness of the fabric keeps an appropriate amount of space between the skin and the garment
・It resists pilling, so it can be worn and loved for a long time
these two points can be cited as reasons. Whether you're aiming to increase warmth or improve breathability, the first step is maintaining a layer of air between the skin and the garment. Since the "grooves" of the waffle fabric don't touch the skin directly, air gets trapped there, forming that air layer. Thermal cut-and-sew garments designed with warmth in mind, as mentioned above, are often long-sleeved and meant to be layered under a sweater or jacket. Layering increases warmth while the fabric's breathability helps regulate body temperature comfortably, whether indoors or outdoors.

Both of these two photos show waffle-fabric cut-and-sew tops made by Healthknit. On the left is the "Super Heavy Waffle Long Sleeve," which we introduced for autumn and winter, and on the right is the summer-oriented "Waffle Short Sleeve" featured this time. The Super Heavy Waffle fabric is knitted with as much cotton packed in as the knitting machine allows, giving it a thick, highly elastic texture and excellent warmth. The summer waffle fabric, on the other hand, is thin and light with a breezy feel. What both have in common is that the waffle-style knit makes for a very comfortable feel even when worn directly against bare skin.
When talking about "fashion," the conversation tends to focus on appearance first. Because the names "waffle cut-and-sew" and especially "thermal cut-and-sew" have become trendy in recent years, the design appeal of waffle fabric tends to catch the eye. But originally, this fabric was born out of a background centered on function. The fact that at the root of this "fashion" lies a "functionality" that considers the wearer is something well worth paying attention to.
While thermal cut-and-sew garments were originally born as warmth-focused innerwear, the functionality of waffle fabric actually brings comfortable wear not only in autumn and winter but in spring and summer as well.

The original thermal cut-and-sew garment was developed as innerwear, but worn alone without layering a sweater or outerwear on top, it transforms into a versatile, breathable top. Because the air layer formed in the "grooves" of the waffle fabric creates just the right amount of space between the skin and the garment, it has the advantage of staying less sticky even when you sweat. Also, during the height of summer, you'll often move back and forth between the blazing sun outdoors and rooms chilled by air conditioning—and here too, the air pockets created by waffle fabric come in handy. Worn alone, it's breathable and doesn't feel sticky. Add a lightweight cardigan or other outer layer, and it provides just the right amount of warmth. Through this functionality, you can spend the sweaty season comfortably.

The relationship between the perfect finishing touch to an outfit and temperature or humidity is a tricky one. In summer, the hotter it gets, the more we tend to sacrifice comfort—putting up with some point of discomfort—in order to enjoy dressing well. "My neck feels a bit hot, but I want to look put-together, so I'll wear a shirt with a collar." "I wore a short-sleeve cut-and-sew top for comfort, but maybe it was too casual for the occasion?" Have you ever had experiences like these? Especially at the height of summer, tops that let you look properly dressed even in casual, lightweight clothing while still being comfortable to wear are surprisingly rare.
In that respect, waffle-fabric short sleeves are a rare find—something you can wear effortlessly on their own, just like knitwear. In terms of clothing category, they count as cut-and-sew items, so strictly speaking they fall under the category of "short-sleeve T-shirts." But this is exactly where the "waffle fabric" does such excellent work. The bumpy texture of the surface looks, from a distance, just like a knit fabric, creating a relaxed feel while avoiding looking too casual—striking just the right note of refinement.
Looking at it from these two angles—comfort and design—you can see that it achieves what might be called "the best of both worlds": gentle on the skin, yet stylish and refined like a knit the moment you slip it on.
In other words, it can sit comfortably alongside your T-shirts in the closet, or you can think of it as an extension of your summer knitwear when it comes to styling. That's the intriguing thing about waffle short sleeves as a garment. Knit? T-shirt? No—waffle short sleeve. A piece of clothing that can be worn in that kind of in-between position is, we think, a truly "delicious" find for summer.
Now, let's take a closer look at the waffle short-sleeve tops that ZUTTO has specially ordered.

As we've already mentioned, thermal cut-and-sew tops originally began life as innerwear, and Healthknit, the brand behind this waffle cut-and-sew top, was likewise founded as a maker of high-quality underwear knits. Situated along the Mississippi River, in a region that continued to grow as a hub for the cotton industry, the brand benefited from a steady supply of quality cotton material, combined with integrated production management from spinning through to sewing—conditions that gave rise to many comfortable, durable pieces of innerwear. It makes you want to picture what that good old era might have looked like. Even now, with production having moved to China, the comfort of these garments remains reliably excellent, and this cut-and-sew top is a popular item at ZUTTO in both spring and summer.
Healthknit was originally created for working men, but its comfort naturally knows no gender. With that in mind, we wanted to offer this waffle cut-and-sew top in a size that lets women wear it on its own, looking polished and free of any discomfort—and that's what led to this release. It comes in four simple solid colors that pair easily with any outfit. The hem is cut on the longer side, so it looks natural whether tucked into bottoms or worn untucked. This waffle-fabric top is so comfortable you'll want to own several. One is a great start, of course, but we also recommend collecting it in multiple colors.
Top: Mock Neck
Bottom: Crew Neck
We offer two designs, distinguished by the neckline pattern: the "Waffle 'Mock Neck' Short Sleeve" and the "Waffle 'Crew Neck' Short Sleeve." The mock neck has a refined quality that lets you wear it like a short-sleeve knit—so much so that you might hesitate for a moment to even call it a T-shirt. The crew neck, on the other hand, has a moderately open neckline and slim ribbing, which pairs well even if you add accessories like necklaces or scarves around the neck.
We've established that waffle fabric is a great choice for summer, but what really matters is how it actually feels to wear. Here, we'll share the points our ZUTTO staff noticed about the comfort after actually trying it on.
When you actually put it on, the fabric feels a bit thicker because of the bumpy texture. Even so, that same texture—unique to waffle fabric—is exactly what makes it feel so pleasant against the skin. Since the fabric itself has more thickness, it might feel warmer in places exposed to direct sunlight, but it should prove very handy in everyday situations where you go back and forth between air-conditioned indoor spaces and the outdoors. The inside is also finished flat, with no seam allowance where the fabric panels meet. In summer, when innerwear tends to be thinner, a scratchy inner seam on a top can easily become a source of irritation, so it's nice to see this kind of attention paid even to a part you can't see.
What you notice once you actually put it on is that, worn alone, it drapes cleanly without looking sloppy. The ribbed cuffs are what banish the usual "T-shirt look." A finish without ribbing at the cuffs tends to give off a relaxed feel, but here the cuffs draw in slightly, giving the piece a refined finish—and subtly covering the upper arms, which is a welcome point for women.
Since the body length is cut on the longer side, you can wear it tucked into your bottoms or left out, and either style looks natural. The hem is cut with a gentle curve, which gives it a shirt-like silhouette—a nice, unique touch. When the top and bottom have a clear color contrast, as in the photo, wearing it untucked can also look stylish.
