For those who want to declutter their bag. A recommendation for the sacoche bag—light, chic, and effortless

These days, keeping things minimal is considered a virtue in daily life, and it's hard not to notice how bags and purses keep getting smaller and smaller. Still, when everyone else seems to be downsizing their bags, you can't help but wonder—maybe I could declutter what's in my own bag and pare it down even further? This time, we're introducing the sacoche bag: light, effortless, and chic. Beyond its fashion appeal, its functionality—which can genuinely ease the small stresses of daily life—deserves attention too.

What is a sacoche bag?

The sacoche bag gives off an impression of lightness and ease. The word "sacoche" comes from the French term for a bag or pouch. It originated as a small, flat bag used in cycling races to pass along water and light food to riders.

Speaking of France, it's home to the Tour de France, the world's largest cycling event—a national obsession on par with the World Cup or the Olympics. Tour de France translates to "Tour of France," and over roughly three weeks, riders travel across the country, covering a distance comparable to circling the whole of Honshu in Japan. The course includes the treacherous mountain terrain of the Alps, and every year it unfolds into a drama of superhuman athletic feats.

The sacoche bag is what riders use during this grueling, life-on-the-line race. It carries things like drink bottles, energy snacks, energy gels, and bananas—sweet items that, along with water, can be quickly converted into energy. Its design is simple and utilitarian, prioritizing just the essentials and easy access to its contents. Thanks to its no-frills functionality and design, outdoor brands began selling it to the general public as a stylish, practical item. Since then, it's grown popular as a light bag for everyday city walking.

On days when you'll be doing a lot of walking, you can slip in small items like sunscreen or lip balm and wear the bag crossbody. Since many sacoche bags let you adjust the strap length to suit your needs, you can position the bag around chest height so you can spot what you need at a glance instead of fumbling around for it by hand. Lengthen the strap and it becomes pochette-like; shorten it and sling it over one shoulder, and it works as a shoulder bag. It's versatile enough for everything from a quick trip to the neighborhood store with just your wallet and phone, to heading out for the day.

Here, we'll use the term "sacoche bag" broadly to refer to small, flat shoulder bags without gussets.

Put to the test: how much of what's in your bag is truly essential?

At first glance, the sacoche bag looks thin and flat, without much room inside. You might be intrigued by it, but also wonder how much it can actually hold. This time, a ZUTTO staff member who uses a sacoche bag daily for her commute puts it to the test, decluttering the contents of her bag to see what truly counts as essential.

◆Product details

Leather Shoulder Bag pouch (BLACK)

She bought this about three months ago, after falling in love at first sight with its elegant matte-finished hardware while photographing it for a product shoot. She uses it for her commute, so it sees near-daily use. It holds her keys, wallet, a small towel, medicine, and more—and thanks to how often she handles it, the bag has developed a nicely worn-in look.

This is the sacoche bag the staff member has been using, which we're featuring here. On casual days, she wears it crossbody as a sacoche; on days when she's in a dress or skirt, she adjusts the strap length to wear it more like a shoulder bag. Comparing her well-used bag side by side with a brand-new one, the difference is striking. The matte sheepskin leather has softened and relaxed, developing a subtle, pleasant sheen. Since it's something used every day, it's nice that the bag isn't at its most beautiful when brand new—rather, it grows more attractive the more you use it.

This is the brand-new version. Since it's sheepskin, it's naturally soft and relaxed even from the start, but compared to the well-worn one, it still looks matte and a bit stiff.

Decluttering your belongings: what do you actually carry?

◆Since there's no gusset, is there anything you're careful about when deciding what to put in the bag?

Basically, I choose and pack only flat items. If I need to bring a bento, I use a separate sub-bag for that. Just having a smaller, lighter handbag reduces stress far more than you'd expect just by looking at it. It's been more comfortable to use than I imagined before buying it—a pleasant surprise, really.

◆What do you keep in each of the pockets?

In the front pocket, I keepthings I need to take out and put away quickly. Unlike the main compartment, the front pocket closes with a magnetic snap, so I take advantage of its quick accessibility to store things like my pass case, keys (with a charm attached), medicine, and lip balm. Depending on how much is already in there, I can sometimes fit in a slim paperback book or my smartphone as well. There's also an inner pocket inside the main compartment, where I keep tissues and adhesive bandages for emergencies.

In the main compartment, I keepthings I tend to take out while stopped, rather than on the moveI keep in it. I also carry my wallet for checking out, a handkerchief for the restroom, earphones for listening to music on the train, and small snacks like gum or mints to eat while working. Since I'm a bit of a worrier, I pack a lightweight, compact folding umbrella just in case of rain, and I roll up a thin tote bag to bring along in case my belongings pile up while I'm out. Since I use a long wallet, I can't fit both the folding umbrella and the tote bag at the same time, but I think anyone with a mini wallet could fit both. My wallet does take up quite a bit of space in the bag, so I've been thinking it's about time to switch to a smaller one!

◆Is there anything you decluttered after starting to use a sacoche?

As I mentioned earlier, I basically got rid of anything with too much bulk or depth. For example, a makeup pouch won't fit. I don't carry many makeup items to begin with, but I can still choose carefully what goes in. I think a lip balm, lipstick, a touch-up powder compact (as long as the case isn't too thick), and a slim compact mirror would all fit. Also, this is the season when you want a bottle of water on hand. When I buy something like water while out, I choose a smaller size, like 350ml, and finish it off. Depending on the shape, some things could technically be forced in, but they'd lose their shape and ruin the appeal of the sacoche, so I've decided not to put them in the bag and let them go instead.

Here is a bag one of our staff members actually uses, along with its contents. "It held more than I expected. I end up putting everything I carry every day into this bag. When I have more to carry, I use a backpack instead, but if I'm in a hurry, this bag works fine as a bag-in-bag, so I just toss it in and head to work as is. Once you declutter your belongings, this becomes the new normal. I'm really glad I took the plunge and chose this bag!" she says.

It seems that using a sacoche bag has helped people declutter while also carefully choosing their daily essentials. In that sense of reconsidering one's lifestyle, we can catch a glimpse of the appeal of the sacoche bag.

A Variety of Choices: Selecting a Sacoche Bag by Material

Sacoche bags come in countless varieties these days. Since the bag originally started out as sports gear, sporty materials remain the mainstay, but if you want to incorporate it as a fashion item, the material is worth paying attention to. Options range from leather, which lets you enjoy the changes that come with age, to suede, whose texture adds a fashionable accent, to lightweight and easy-to-use quilted fabric. Let's take a look at some of the popular sacoche bags featured on ZUTTO.

Easy to Use from Day One, and Enjoy How the Leather Changes Over Time: Sheepskin Leather

The leather shoulder bag pouch has the sense of scale of a large pouch that's become a bag in its own right. This sacoche bag is made of soft sheepskin leather. It's the same one introduced earlier as a staff favorite, and it develops an elegant sheen the more you use it.

It comes in two colors: L.GRAY, a shade close to beige, and BLACK, a deep jet black. Since the color you choose can dramatically change the mood of your outfit, take your time deciding.

The glossy strap gives it an elegant impression.

You can wear it over your shoulder as a shoulder bag, or tuck the strap into the outer pocket and carry it as a clutch bag.

For Those Who Want a Stylish Fashion Statement: Suede Leather

This compact drawstring-style sacoche bag has a charming cinched-top shape. It's made from an elegant suede fabric that feels soft and gentle against the skin. Many people may associate suede with fall and winter, but it's actually a season-less material, used in sneakers you can wear year-round as well as in summery sandals and slip-ons. Using it on a small item like this sacoche bag creates a stylish contrast in texture against your clothing.

Another notable feature is that you can change how you carry it depending on how you use the strap. Pull the cord out from one side, and you can wear it over your shoulder. Pull it out from both sides, and the handle shortens so you can carry it by hand.

Why not use this sacoche bag when you want to travel light, carrying just your smartphone and a mini wallet? When worn over the shoulder, it fits close to your body, so there's no stress from carrying a bag. It doesn't look out of place even as a secondary bag alongside another one, and its minimal design suits everything from a breezy summer outfit to a winter coat.

It comes in four colors: green, taupe, navy, and brown. Since the surface area is small, it's also nice to choose a color you wouldn't normally wear. It can serve as an accent to your outfit.

For Those Who Prioritize Lightness and Durability: Quilted Fabric

This is the quilted shoulder bag pouch by PATRICK STEPHAN. It's a sacoche made from a quilted nylon pouch with a strap attached. With a wide, U-shaped zipper opening and a weight of under 200g, it's remarkably light, not just in appearance but in actual feel. This quilted pattern was inspired by vintage French military wear. You can sense the texture of the nylon and the attention to detail down to the finest points, making this a bag with a subtle sense of mode fashion beneath its simplicity.

KAHKI

BLACK

Since a quilted-material bag won't scratch the way leather can, it's also ideal for use as a bag-in-bag. You can use it as an oversized pouch to organize the inside of a large-capacity bag, and then take it out and use it as a sacoche when you want to travel light.

The outer pocket has a magnetic closure

A sacoche bag you'll want to carry once you've decluttered the contents of your own bag. Why not choose one whose material and shape truly suit your everyday life?
