REN is a Japanese brand that creates bags, wallets, pouches and other small goods from high-quality leather. Their lineup ranges from everyday staple shapes to designs with a bit of a twist, and you can sense from the brand a deep knowledge of matching the right leather—including their own original leathers—to the right purpose, drawing on a rich variety of options.
This time, we're putting the spotlight on wallets. Since REN works with so many different types of leather, even wallets of the same design can look quite different depending on the leather used. So, in addition to organizing wallets by size and design, we'll also introduce how each leather changes with age.
Wallet sizes and designs seem to go through trends from time to time, but since a wallet is something carried and used every day, "ease of use for you personally" should be the top priority when choosing one. That's why REN keeps up with mainstream trends while always offering a wide range of sizes and specifications, so that you can choose what suits you best.
・Sizing and design thought out to match each person's lifestyle at the time
・A "choosable" range of leathers that suit different uses and preferences
These two points seem to be the key to understanding REN wallets.
There are four shapes of REN wallets featured on ZUTTO in total. Is it your main everyday wallet, or a mini size for weekends? Is it just for yourself, or does it also need to hold household money? Even though we call them all "wallets," what people are looking for varies. So, let's go through them again in order, starting with the smallest size.
A compact wallet small enough to fit in the back pocket of your pants. Bills fold into thirds, but the ease and lightness it offers are outstanding. There are 4 card slots, but the slot behind the bill compartment can hold 2 cards per space. The box-type coin space surprisingly holds quite a lot—according to ZUTTO's own testing, it fit 25 coins. (Though it was quite full.)
Specs
・Card slots × 4
・Bill compartment × 1
・Box-type coin space × 1
Recommended for
・Those looking for a small wallet to use with a small bag
・Those who mainly pay by card and don't carry more cash than necessary
ZUTTO's No. 1 best-selling Outer Pocket Wallet. It has a pocket-type coin space attached to the outside of the bi-fold bill compartment. Only the top has gusseting, so it stays slim when contents are few, yet still has plenty of capacity when needed. Even if it becomes stuffed with change, the outer pocket design means there's no worry about the wallet itself bulging open.
Specs
・Card slots × 8
・Bill compartments × 2
・Zippered coin space × 1
・Free pockets × 2 (below the card slots)
・Access to both bills and coins from one direction (no need to switch sides)
Recommended for
・Those who pay roughly half by card and half by cash
・Those who don't like large, bulky wallets but still want the reassurance of enough space
△The ZUTTO exclusive made in MIES leather, NOCTURNE NAVY, is a new color.
For those who want something more compact than a long wallet but aren't willing to compromise on capacity, this is the one. Its bi-fold size fits comfortably in the hand, so it's easy to handle. Like the "Outer Pocket Wallet" introduced above, this is also a bi-fold type, but it offers greater coin space capacity and more free pockets.
Specs
・Card slots × 5
・Bill compartment × 1
・Zippered coin spaces × 2 (divided)
・Free pockets × 5 (below the card slots and in front of/behind the coin space)
・Access to both bills and coins from one direction (no need to switch sides)
Recommended for
・Those who want good storage capacity along with a certain degree of compactness
・Those who also want to keep receipts organized inside
Open it wide and you can see everything at a glance—that's the kind of usability this offers. It's great for packing in plenty, and it's also a wonderful choice for those who prefer to leave a little extra room in their wallet so things are easy to find. This long wallet has a shallow gusset, so despite its large capacity, it slips smoothly into a bag.
Specs
・Card slots ×12
・Bill compartments ×2
・Zippered coin pocket ×1
・Also fits receipts and other slips
・Both bills and coins are accessible from one direction (no need to shift the wallet in your hand)
Who is this for?
・Those who want to carry both cash and cards securely
・Those who manage not just their own money, but also household finances
Even with the same wallet design, the mood can change quite a bit depending on the type of leather used. Let's take a look at the most popular Outer Pocket Wallet in a few different leathers.
【MIES】: Goat leather
A special order made exclusively for ZUTTO. Goat leather has a pleasantly soft texture right from the start, molding to your hand as if it were sticking to it. It also has a plump, springy feel, making it a pleasure to hold. Traditionally in high demand for garments like gloves and hats, this leather is prized for its supple texture that changes expression gracefully over time. Its naturally glossy grain is finely covered with a natural pebbled texture, and thanks to its dense fiber structure, it resists losing its shape and holds up well against friction.
If you squeeze MIES leather in your hand, you'll hear a soft squeaking sound. This is known as "naki-gawa" (crying leather), and it's said to be a sign of high-quality leather—proof that the quality of the raw hide and the tannin tanning process are perfectly balanced.
【SOLUM】: Cowhide
This vegetable-tanned kip leather is tanned using tannins extracted from plant bark and leaves. Its distinctively coarse grain develops unique contrasts and highlights the more it's used. To achieve a texture that's both easy to handle and comfortably soft, the leather undergoes a kneading process that brings out just the right feel. With minimal shrinkage and excellent durability, it develops a natural, beautiful patina the more you use it. Among the REN leathers, SOLUM tends to age the fastest, making it a great choice for those who enjoy leather that truly looks and feels like leather.
Here's how SOLUM leather transforms with regular use. What was once a matte surface gradually develops an overall shine, becoming glossy. The fold, once stiff, has softened, become slimmer, and molded more closely to the hand. This wallet looks ready to be a companion for many more years to come.
【SMOKE】: Pigskin
Nubuck offers a completely different look from smooth leather. This is REN's original pigskin, developed jointly with a Japanese tannery. It was carefully crafted to capture the fine, brushed texture unique to nubuck along with the look of leather that has been lovingly used for years. Made using twice the usual production time, this leather develops an even more distinctive character as its surface nap becomes tousled with continued use. Another feature of this leather is that it's remarkably lightweight, and thanks to the high density of its surface layer, it's also quite resistant to friction.
Here's how SMOKE leather ages over time. The wallet on the right has been used for about a year, and you can see that the overall color has lightened, with the nubuck's characteristic brushed texture giving way to a soft sheen. No special maintenance, such as brushing, has been done. The staff member who uses this wallet daily keeps it in the main compartment of their bag, and commented, "If I'd kept it in an inner pocket instead, the corners probably wouldn't show this much wear."
【PHILIP】: Cowhide
This is a new leather debuting this spring. Developed with a focus on texture and ease of handling, this cowhide is chrome-tanned to achieve a supple feel that molds comfortably to the hand. The grain pattern on the surface is created through embossing, ensuring a high degree of consistency in quality. This light-colored leather is finished to show minimal change over time, making it a great choice for those who want to enjoy a clean, pristine look for years to come.
