One More Piece to Buy Now: Winter Sweaters (Crew Neck Edition)

Winter sweaters have arrived at ZUTTO as well. Since the cold weather came late this year, many of you may have been getting by with a cut-and-sew top layered under a cardigan, or just a thin sweater on its own. But isn't it about time to get yourself a properly warm piece? For those who want to spend Christmas and the New Year holidays in a sweater they truly love, we're introducing this year's must-have extra piece—one you'll surely want to keep wearing next year and beyond.

If you're buying a sweater now, here's what we recommend looking for.

・Warm enough on its own: Layering several thin pieces can leave your shoulders feeling stiff. Check the knit and material to find something that keeps you warm even worn alone.

・A classic color and shape: A staple you can keep wearing without a doubt, next year and beyond.

・Resistant to wear, easy to care for: Something well-made that doesn't demand much upkeep is always the better choice.

This time, we're focusing on the basic crew neck.

A Material That's Warm on Its Own: Shetland Wool

A Shetland sweater is a sweater made from the wool of sheep raised on the Shetland Islands, off the northern coast of Scotland—known as Shetland wool. Sheep raised in this harsh coastal environment, with its large temperature swings and high humidity, have wool that's a little different from other sheep, developed to protect their bodies. Shetland wool is known for being remarkably light and warm, with rich, vivid coloring that's impossible to replicate elsewhere. Even among wools, a Shetland wool knit is one that keeps you warm on its own, while remaining light and airy.

【A Rare Take on Sherbet Colors: Brush Crew Neck Sweater (NORMAN TULLOCH)】

CREAM

The first thing that draws you to the NORMAN TULLOCH Shetland wool sweater is its sherbet coloring. When you think of a Shetland wool sweater, you probably picture classic, crisp colors like red, blue, and white. This sweater is different. Its sherbet tones, a soft blend of colors, bring a gentle feel even when paired with masculine bottoms.

CREAM

Shetland wool knits with a brushed surface tend to look bulky because of their fluffy texture, but this one strikes just the right balance of brushed softness. Designed to fit the Japanese body type, it avoids clinging too closely to your figure, making it a clean, easy-to-wear piece.

CREAM

The sleeves feature finger holes—you can slip your thumb through, or simply fold the cuffs back. The layered look peeking out from under an outer coat when you use the finger holes is also a nice touch.

【Nostalgia Made New: Nordic Sweater (Harley of Scotland)】

ノルディックセーター TUDOR

TUDOR

A crew neck sweater with a Nordic knit pattern around the collar has a certain nostalgic charm—and it's exactly the kind of piece you'll want to wear again right now. For a cozy, heartwarming feel, try the red TUDOR or the beige TUSK. The striking NEW BRIGHT BLUE offers a shade you won't find anywhere else.

NEW BRIGHT BLUE

The Harley of Scotland series is also made using high-quality Shetland wool. This Nordic-pattern knit sweater in particular is a rare find you won't often come across elsewhere. Blended with mohair, it has a soft, fluffy texture that captures the feeling of the season perfectly.

【A Grown-Up Color Palette for a Pop of Winter Accent: SHAGGY DROP SHOULDER Sweater (ZUTTO)】

PETREL

PAGAN

When you think of "grown-up" knit colors, don't black, gray, and camel always come to mind? Vivid reds, blues, and yellows are lovely too, but might feel like too much of a stretch for you. What you really want is a shade that pairs well with a basic, mature wardrobe, yet still feels distinct from anything else out there. If that's what you're after, we recommend ZUTTO's Shaggy Drop Shoulder Sweater.

PETREL

PETREL

It has the relaxed body width that suits today's oversized knit trend, sleeves long enough to look put-together rather than sloppy, drop shoulders that flatter any shoulder width, and a length that reaches down to the hip. Every proportion is perfectly judged, and combined with the beautiful color, the high-quality Shetland wool, and the flattering fit, this is a truly versatile piece.

The vermilion-tinged SCARLET and the seasonal DARK OLIVE both suit the warm, yellow-toned complexion common among Japanese skin tones

A Knit That's Warm on Its Own: ANDERSEN-ANDERSEN's Sailor Sweater

セーラーセーター THE NAVY CREWNECK blue

blue: A unisex navy, perfect as your first ANDERSEN-ANDERSEN piece

The ANDERSEN-ANDERSEN sailor sweater is a winter staple that discerning shoppers keep coming back to. Based on the sailor sweater (fisherman sweater) that has long been cherished as an essential tool by the people of Denmark, a seafaring nation, it's made using a highly skilled knitting technique that blocks wind and keeps you warm with just one layer.

Taupe

A sweater to love for years to come, one that gets passed down through the family. The features of ANDERSEN-ANDERSEN's sailor sweaters are as follows.

・Made symmetrically front and back

・A tight, dense knit that's warm enough to wear without a jacket

・Little animal odor, and lighter than you'd expect for such a densely knit wool

・Thanks to a special spinning and knitting method, it truly holds its shape

・The sweater itself resists stretching out

・Resistant to pilling

・High windproof and water-repellent performance

・Comes with arm warmers

・Stitching is added at points that bear stress during wear

Denmark is a country known for producing many world-renowned designers, especially in furniture and product design. This sailor sweater combines functionality with beauty as an object—genuinely warm and remarkably durable. Unless it's bitterly cold, you can even go outside in winter wearing just this sweater alone. Touch the thick fabric, and you'll immediately understand why it doesn't give way easily.

A Standard Shape: SLAITH High-Gauge Knit

TARTAN RED

TARTAN RED

Having tried it ourselves, we can confidently recommend this piece. The high-gauge, seamless knit has no bumps or ridges, making it wonderfully soft and comfortable to wear. It's standard and refined, yet works just as well styled casually. SLAITH is committed to production in England, and the design isn't swayed by passing trends.

As a fabric maker, SLAITH uses the world's finest natural fibers and aims to create new value through the latest techniques, all while pursuing sustainable manufacturing. That so much care goes into a piece you can buy at this price is exactly what you'd expect from a true factory brand.

Available in four colors: red, blue, camel, and light blue. Every one of them suits Japanese skin tones beautifully while still serving as a nice accent color.

AGATE

The great thing about thin knits is that they don't bunch up when tucked into your bottoms.

A Standard Design: A Cozy Aran Knit from a Land of Bitter Cold

【Coloring reminiscent of an Irish winter, with a crispness unusual for aran knits: Crew Neck Multi/KERRYWOOLLENS MILLS】

Pure Aran

Oatmeal

A sweater knit in the Aran style using pure wool. While the design has a wonderfully cozy feel, the combination of two different patterns—aran honeycomb stitch and the tree-of-life stitch—switching back and forth creates a fresh, unexpected mix.

Pure Aran

Dark Natural

Aran knits have always given the impression of bulking up awkwardly under a coat, but this one has sleeves that stay slim and a back that doesn't bunch up, making it easy to layer. Oversized knits may be trendy and cute, but when you consider how they'll pair with a coat, it might be wiser to gradually build up a collection of knits in this kind of moderate size.

【Richly expressive cable knitting: Merino Wool Cable Sweater/aran woollen mills】

ケーブルセーター(WHITE)

The white Aran knit is more than just beautiful as an object—it's a curious sweater that brings out an endearing charm no matter what bottoms you pair it with. Suited to any age, this has the feel of THE quintessential Aran knit, one you'll want to make a staple of your winter wardrobe. It's cut with a relaxed fit, and the knit's stretch means it won't strain your shoulders, giving it a soft, comfortable wear.

ケーブルセーター(WHITE)

This raised, embossed pattern paired with expressive stitching is the true pleasure of an Aran knit. Being white, this sweater pairs easily even with patterned pieces—kilt skirts, denim, long skirts, or wide-leg pants.

A Design That Guards Against Wear: William Lockie's Crew Neck Elbow Patch Sweater

クルーネックエルボーパッチセーター LINEN

LINEN

William Lockie's elbow patch sweater takes a basic shape and adds an utterly charming touch with patches at the elbows. Those patches aren't just decorative—they serve a reinforcing purpose too.

クルーネックエルボーパッチセーター DRIFTWOOD

DRIFTWOOD

The design originally comes from hunting attire, where reinforcement at the elbows prevented wear when bracing a gun against the ground—a fusion of function and design. On a man, it lends a gentlemanly air, but on a woman, it curiously takes on a rather endearing charm. The sweater itself is cut to a size that suits the Japanese body shape, and each one is carefully finished by hand. Even after years of wear, it won't wear thin—it maintains the elasticity of the wool while resisting any loss of shape.

BLACK: In black, the patches are less noticeable, making it a great choice for first-time wearers

FLANNEL: A basic-colored crew neck knit with patches as an accent point.

The knit itself is made to be durable, but the elbow area is naturally prone to friction—even without wearing through, it can develop pilling and needs a bit of extra care. With the patches in place, the sweater isn't just stylish—it also becomes much easier to wear regularly in everyday life.

SCARLET: In red, the beige patches stand out only subtly. It pairs wonderfully well with denim.

A Sweater Made with Pilling-Resistant Yarn and Relatively Easy to Store: Mock Neck Sweater/ZUTTO

モックネックセーター(LIGHT GREY)

NAVY

This incredibly lightweight ZUTTO mock neck sweater impressed our ZUTTO staff member, who struggles with stiff shoulders, with just how light and warm it is. One issue that's hard to avoid with sweaters is pilling. This sweater is made using what's called sōmōshi (worsted yarn), which is spun by aligning only long-fibered wool. Because of this, it has less fuzz, giving the knit a smooth finish, and it's said to resist pilling much better than sweaters made with woolen (carded) yarn.

モックネックセーター(LIGHT GREY)

LIGHT GREY

The dropped shoulder design and length are perfectly balanced. Those concerned about their figure often gravitate toward tunics that cover the hip area, but while these may look fine in the mirror, when seen from behind while actually moving, they often fail to fully conceal one's figure. As you can see from the back view, this knit has a silhouette that neither clings nor hangs loosely, and because the hem isn't fitted tightly, it avoids making the body look larger, lending a slender impression instead.

モックネックセーター(LIGHT GREY)

The side slits are another key feature, helping maintain the silhouette while also allowing for ease of movement.

We've introduced a variety of crew neck knits as well, and each one meets ZUTTO's standard for "things you'll want to use forever." Resist the urge to jump on this season's trends, and instead choose a special piece you'll still want to wear next year, and the year after that.
