To curb the excessive use of plastic shopping bags, more and more stores have started charging for them. Recently, some shops have gone as far as eliminating bags altogether, encouraging customers to always bring their own. For those not yet used to eco bags or sub bags, it seems the time has come to finally take action.
When talking with ZUTTO's customers and staff, we often hear comments like this."I need an eco bag or sub bag, but so many of them look cheap or have patterns too pop-ish to want to carry." "I want a bag that lifts my spirits, even just for the walk home from the neighborhood supermarket." "I don't like bags so thin you can see what's inside." "Eco bags tend to come in patterns and colors aimed at women, so men feel too embarrassed to carry them."and so on... it seems people have a lot of wishes and complaints.
To begin with, if you don't have much time for leisurely shopping on weekdays, you probably do a big shop on the weekend and just pick up a few missing items during the week. While it may be unavoidable to carry a large shopping bag on days off, on weekdays, since you're buying less, what people really want, it seems, is to walk around with as compact a bag as possible.
This time, we'd like to suggest that the Brown Bag (lunch bag) by kurashiki canvas is just right for a shopping bag that's "small enough for weekdays," "stylish without being too pop," and has "a design men can carry too, one that doesn't feel too domestic." When you're not using it as a shopping bag, it can serve other purposes such as storage, so we also recommend it for those who don't want to accumulate too many things.
Under the direction of 6SHiKi, who has made numerous canvas bags popular with ZUTTO customers, we created a bag that softens and grows more supple the more you use it.
GREY×ORANGE
DARK RED
The name comes from the English term "Brown bag," which can mean both "lunch bag" and "brown paper bag." With plenty of depth, it's a convenient size for holding all sorts of things. It has enough capacity to fit four boxes of tissues, making it perfect as a lunch bag for school or work, holding your lunch box, chopsticks, a drink, and even a snack all at once.
Even if it's not your main bag, you might think a bigger bag would be better. But actually, this size turns out to be very easy to use. Many people find themselves unable to throw away paper bags they've received from stores, keeping them around just in case. It's easy to understand if you think of this as that kind of "might come in handy someday" size.
As a bag, there are two main ways to carry it: a casual style where you roll up the top and grip it, and a handbag style using the short handles. When new, the canvas is stiff, so rolling it up doesn't feel quite natural yet, and slipping your hand through the handles can feel a bit snug. But with use, it gradually softens to just the right feel.
It also works well as a main bag for men to carry casually with a wallet and phone inside, and it excels as a sub bag too. There are no pockets. Inside, there's a snap button, making it easy to roll up even when it's full of belongings.
Beyond use as a bag, it also works well as a storage tool. It comes in handy for organizing shelves or tidying up a desktop.
Also great for organizing documents
We compared a Brown bag that's been in use for four years with a crisp, brand-new one. Even though it hasn't been used all that frequently, it's been through the washing machine many times, so the sizing has come out and it's grown soft and supple. Wrinkles have given it a well-worn look, and the surface has become smooth as well.

The handles have also molded nicely to the shape they're used in, making the bag much easier to carry. It's a testament to being directed by a canvas bag professional that, even after so many washes, it still stands up properly on its own. A bag that can stand on its own is, after all, an important point when you're putting in items of different shapes, sizes, and weights.

Once it becomes this soft, it's easy to roll up and fold down compact. It starts out a bit stiff, but the way it gradually softens with use feels almost like watching a shy child slowly open up—there's something quite endearing about it.
The Brown bag can be used both as an eco bag and for storage. Here's a summary of some ways to use it, as an example.
▶︎As an eco bag
As a sub bag for convenience stores or supermarkets. Even with heavy items inside, it holds its shape and stays sturdy.
▶︎For hiding cables
If charging cords and cables are an eyesore in your living room, use a Brown bag to hide them away. In the photo we've taken the phone out to make things clear, but if you keep your smartphone, charger, wireless earphones and the like tucked inside this bag, everything stays neatly contained.
▶︎For storage around the kitchen
Adjust the size to match what you're storing, and use it to hold things like tea or instant coffee that tend to end up scattered about. Since you can adjust the height as the quantity increases, it turns out to be surprisingly handy.
With plastic or wooden containers, which have a fixed shape, you often end up with wasted gaps in storage—but with fabric, the beauty is that it can change shape to fit whatever you put inside.
When things are gathered together in one place, you're less likely to accidentally knock over or drop items at the back while reaching for something.
It's also great for gathering up everything you've used once you've finished cooking in the kitchen. It's handy to keep things stocked like an apron, paper napkins, a torchon, or dry dish towels inside. Even with light items inside, the Brown bag stands up nicely on its own, which is convenient.
▶︎For organizing your office desk or as a bag to carry around
When you're working at your desk and have a lot of things to use, have you ever sighed at the sight of a cluttered desk? If so, we'd really like you to try using a Brown bag to organize your desk.
Fill it with the things you need—a pen holder, calculator, catalogs, memo pads—and it becomes your own compact toolbox. Just like the "supply box" you kept in your desk back in elementary school, you put in only what you need, take out just what's necessary when you're using your desk, and when you don't need it, put it in your locker or set it by your feet—keeping your desk organized. No matter how close the locker is, it's a hassle to walk over every time you need something, so if you just keep this nearby, you can feel at ease and focus on your work. It's especially handy for things you only use occasionally, like scissors or a stapler, to gather them together in a box like this as a temporary holding spot.
The Brown bag (lunch bag) can change its shape freely to suit your needs. With so many possible uses, you'll worry less about it ending up unused and forgotten in a drawer. You'll also get to enjoy the pleasure of breaking in a canvas bag over time.
